Little fan fact: The show is so different from the novel and the ending so tragic (unlike the novel where they get a happy ending and they live their immortal lives together forever), that Priest, the author of the novel, even wrote an extra story (after the release of the show, which was years after she wrote the novel), where she made clear that the story of the show is an alternative universe of the original story.
I choose to believe that they're just not done yet in the show. They did leave us a bit of an opening. It's the damn legal thing - can't show two gays happy and together at the end on shows or movies. Chinese Hayes code.
@@MavenCree I know they couldn't let them be happy together but "One day we will meet again" is still too much tragic for me. 😭 I feel like Word of Honor and The Untamed dealt with that rule a little better because I have a happy ending feel from them even though it wasn't completely explicit HE that would violate this rule.
@@michaelamoravcova1127 They had shot an ending where Shen Wei came back as a kid [ 9 yr old ish] but they scrapped it off. I'm sure you can find it online somewhere!

@@ReemaFaisal-pr5kr I definitely recommend reading it! Just prepare that it's really different from the drama. The censorship forbids more things than just gay stuff, such as Chinese mythology which is the novel's main theme, so practically the only thing the drama and novel have in common are names and characters dynamics.

Well the series was adapted from the Guardian novel, a Chinese danmei focused on the supernatural and part of Chinese cosmological history.
Shen Wei is what the author calls a 'ghost' so he never died, that's why he remembers Zhao Yunlan, he has searched for him in each of his reincarnations for the last 10,000 years.
The history they share of the 'past' is complex and deep... and remains so in the present of the story, as Shen Wei's aura/energy slowly damages Yunlan since he is human and Shen Wei 'ghost', so he can't stay close to him. and yet Shen Wei shares his vital energy (life) to save him from an injury, weakening himself with the passage of time as his 'non-human' nature.
The series still hurts me, having seen it broadcast on youku, Guardian was my introduction to the world of danmei and why not? I read the novel, it remains to be said that due to Chinese censorship the series orbits very far from the relationship they have in the novel and its ending is completely different; various more "spiritual and cosmological" context factors were replaced in the series by more scientific themes to avoid controversy.
BUT the chemistry between the two main actors (who are close friends in real life) is more than enough; Zhu Yilong (Shen Wei) is a master of acting, playing 3 different roles in the series (Shen Wei, Master Wei and Ye Zun), despite the low budget and clear problems with the handling of audio and CGI in the series in general, it's very good and I highly recommend read the novel.
Yes, Shen Wei was alive the whole time (10 000 years) and was waiting for Zhao YunLan to come back, because in the past, when they first met, Zhao YunLan was the only one who tried to see the true Shen Wei and didn't see him only as some powerful untouchable creature but as a human being (which made Shen Wei fall in love with him, but shhh, censors can't know that). In the show, it's not another life, but like we learn later, Zhao YunLan at some point travels in the past and meets Shen Wei there, which is how Shen Wei knows him (the story is very different in the novel; Shen Wei is there also alive the whole time since he's not a human, but Zhao YunLan goes through multiple reincarnations and never remembers his previous lives or Shen Wei).

I love this show so much! it actually made me cry quite a bit lol but i love them
Shen Wei (the one with the glasses) is a professor at a university and Zhao Yunlan (the other one with the facial hair) is sort of a supernatural detective/cop kinda?? him and his unit work on cases involving people with supernatural abilities that the regular detectives and stuff arent capable of dealing with
its both past lives and not at the same time, i believe in the novel (havent read it yet lol) Zhao Yunlan is a reincarnation of the man Shen Wei used to know while in the show its actually more of a time travel situation where their first time meeting for Zhao Yunlan is in modern times while Shen Wei first met him all the way back in the past 10,000 years ago and has been searching for him this entire time but Zhao Yunlan doesnt know him yet because he hasnt traveled back in time yet (im so sorry if that doesnt make sense im not sure how to explain it rn)
so its sort of a past life scenario for Zhao Yunlan but Shen Wei is still the same person and has been alive this entire time (so he's over 10,000 years old while Zhao Yunlan is somewhere between like 25-30 years old i think which is why Shen Wei remembers everything and Zhao Yunlan doesnt)
but yes truly an incredible series that i hold very close to my heart

ok so basically something had happened to Zhao Yunlan in a fight and it injured him and they couldnt figure out how to fix it so in the end they used a sort of magical artifact they had obtained previously to reverse the damage done but in doing so Shen Wei shared some of his life force with Zhao Yunlan and compromised his own powers as a result (Shen Wei is actually part of like an alien race which im not going to get into right now but theyre called Dixingren and basically the dixingren have dark energy and the humans have light energy) and so when Shen Wei healed Zhao Yunlan and shared his life force he took in some of his light energy which compromised his own energy structure because they dont mix and was making him weaker and he didnt tell Zhao Yunlan what happened so that scene in the video where he finds Shen Wei in the kitchen with the knife and the cut on his wrist and looking super pale and weak is when Shen Wei was attempting to drain some of the energy to fix what happened and thats when Zhao Yunlan figures out what happened and gets upset
Anyone feel free to correct me on anything i may have gotten wrong since im doing this entirely from memory and i havent read the novel yet so theres some things different and that i may not know and alos its 6am and im very rambly lmao ok bye now
they changed a lot from the novel. in the novel, yunlan finds out abt shen wei's real identity the night he was drunk. after drinking, shen wei lost his consciousness, no heartbeat. yunlan panics and finds out that shen wei was not human. like the drama, yunlan was interested in shen wei from the very beginning. he was courting him. after finding out shen wei's identity as ghost ambassador, he was a little bit awkward. but he loved him so much. so, they became a couple. i don't remember a lot of things.. but i remember that shen wei was supposed to die along with some artifact to save the world. he wanted yunlan to die with him...he waited thousands of years for meeting yunlan. so, it was also happy ending for him...yunlan was also ready to die along with him. rather than living alone in misery, dying with the person he loves . but when the time comes, shen wei sacrificed alone after making yunlan unconscious. after waking up, yun lan got his powers and memories of kun lun back and he resurrected shen wei. he was mad at shen wei for dying alone. after shen wei's lot of sorry and promise, he forgave him. the novel has a happy ending

It impresses me how when relating the series to the novel, things take a 180 turn; After learning that Shen Wei is not human, Yunlan visits Shen Wei's house and finds a room full of paintings and photographs from different eras of him (Yunlan) drawn and painted by Shen Wei, so the theme of the past is more of a narrative. of Shen Wei, then it is discovered that Yunlan was originally Kun Lun a mountain god who played a role of great importance when the heavens fell on earth and the war of the gods (cosmology) and there he is described as knowing Shen Wei and how he takes care of him ;W;
Another scene that is changed a lot is the scene at 3:05 where Yunlan discovers that Shen Wei has to cut his chest and draw blood directly from his heart to prevent his Yan energy from harming Yunlan, since being a 'ghost' the only pure part of Shen Wei is his heart and hence why the chest wound, quite dramatic that arc in the novel in fact.
English is not my native language either lol, so I don't know if it's explained correctly.
OMG, I was just thinking about if anyone had recommended a more comprehensive video about Guardian to you yet. As much as I love the crack video one, there are jokes there that don’t really land if you haven’t watched the show yet. Anyway, I absolutely adored this series. Hopefully you’ll be able to react to more from Guardian.

I love chinese bl. Chinese bl series(yes i call them bl even without kisses and sex scenes) show so much emotion between the characters and the stories are very interesting so I may prefer them most. I watched Guardian after The Untamed and loved it too. My favorite after the Untamed is Killer and Healer, which i rarely see people reacting to, which is weird. I am surprised that one was aired because.. it was not subtle and they had to cut some very sus moments out, but you can watch those scenes on youtube.
This live action broke me and it's very different from the novel. In the series, they finally met again after 10,000 years only to die again. The post-guardian depression was so real. This series is so nostalgic. Takes me back to 2018.
I haven't finished the drama yet, and the truth is, I was disappointed when they showed their past. I expected it to be more in-depth, but they made it one meeting. If they made it more than one meeting, it would have been consistent with his search for his partner for 10,000 years 😅

Apparently the Chinese censors don't allow a gay couple to end up together. This is such a believable love story due to the chemistry of the actors and the book. I'm still watching clips from it. Now they've taken the English subtitles off the You Tube version, so I bought the DVD. The ending is hard to watch.
Menurutku, novelnya punya latar yang lebih simpel, tapi cerita yang lebih complicated
Sedangkan drama sebaliknya, latar dunia yang memusingkan tapi dengan cerita yg lebih simpel
Dan aku sangat bersyukur Priest membuat extra chapter untuk cerita dari dramanya yg endingnya benar-benar jsbsvakbdnz, karena ternyata mereka happy ending juga huhu😭
