One story I heard about Hawk missiles was from an acquaintance back in the pre gulf wars time. He was looking in an F-14 cockpit and noticed a "Fuzzbuster" anti police speed radar detector. He ask why that was there? He was told that Iran still had Hawk missiles from the Shaw government days and the F-14 anti missile warning system was set up for Russian sourced missiles frequencies and would not pick up the Hawk system radars. But the Hawk radar's emissions would be picked up by the anti speeding radar detectors so they put them on the aircraft's glare shield for early warning just in case.

I was a 16E(Command and Control crewman) then 24G(ICC and continuous wave radar tech) and then 24R (IHAWK master mechanic). The missiles themselves are not the issue, but the associated radar and command and control systems, as well as some logistical issues like radar parts, and maintenance as well as missile delivery and assembly and launcher loading procedure. I don't know what overarching Air Defense Command and Control Ukraine has - we had challenges getting IHAWK integrated with US Air Force and USMC because everyone used different data link systems. However; a IHAWK unit can operate independently, guided by whatever ROE is in effect. IHAWK had IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) capability - air breathing threats have to 'squawk' the correct IFF to avoid being engaged. Drones do not have that ability. I thought it interesting that a picture of an ICC (Integrated Command and Control) was pulling a IHawk launcher. We usually towed the ICWAR. The basic load of an US Army IHawk battery was 32 missiles. The IHawk missile system can see targets out to 80 Km (with the HIPAR), but usually engages around 40-60 Km. The system can launch missiles one at a time, salvo (two) and Ripple (three) at a time, depending on how the threat is assessed. It also has the ability to engage super-short range targets, usually pop-up targets that employ terrain-following navigation. While the system is highly mobile, it does take some training to select an appropriate location, emplace the system, get it to battle stations, and acquire/engage targets. Then you gotta march order the equipment and get to another location to keep the enemy from zeroing in on you. Basically, if the IHawk acquisition radars can see a target, the missile will successfully engage it.

They were posted way out "in the boonies" (ie: well away from the flightline, as we were directly on the flightline) - out by the Cryogenics Shop and Ordnance (ie: the liquid nitrogen, the bombs, missiles, and aircraft gun rounds, and the Hawk missiles - ie: all the highly explosive stuff was well away from the general population, LOL).
The only time we saw them was either in the chow hall, on deployment - or at the Enlisted Club where after a many drinks/beers there was always a fight between them and other shops or units, LOL.....

Definitely one of the best air defense systems ever developed. Most people have no idea just how good it is. It is also, from what I know, the first system ever to shoot down a short range tactical ballistic missile. Or artillery missile as I believe Honest John was called by the US Army. However, anti-missile capability was one of the crucial military capabilities that the US dropped development on to appease the soviets... Of course the soviets never returned the favor, but those who pushed for canceling the development of anti-missile capability in the US were in reality the ones whose only goal to aid the Soviet Union.

OTOH if you let the drone through, what would be the cost of the damage?
Offensive weapons are much easier to build when they can cause a lot of damage by themselves. A defensive weapon is a lot harder to build because they have to cover all possibilities to be effective.
For example, it is expensive to build a 1000 km trench network to guard against border incursions while it's much cheaper to create a 5 m gap in the trench system for an enemy attack.

I don't think Hawk would be anywhere near the threat to Russian aircraft as the Patriot. I mean, one Patriot ambush, on May 13, destroyed five Russian aircraft, with all aircrew KIA. I don't think Hawk will ever come close to that sort of accomplishment.
That said, we have a ton of Hawks in storage doing nothing, and they are capable of defending Ukrainian civilian cities from Russian cruise missiles and suicide drones. This can free up more sophisticated air defense systems for front line use.

If we use those to shoot down lancets... Putin will be laughing so hard. We spend more for one of those hawks up than it cost for Russia to use a swarm of lancets. The lancet has without a doubt been the biggest game changer in this war. It will require NATO re-write its entire war strategy for years to come. Mark this... the lancet will change warfare for years to come. Every country better start developing their own version if they want to survive a major conflict. Rest assured that Russia is already working on the next gen lancet too. The new pod launched model is an upgrade but I suspect it will end up being refined further... More range and speed are going to be coming next... watch and see. I predict 1hr loitering time and 100mph level flight in the next version. Expect to see different profile with far less drag on next version. Russia can't compete with the USA on high tech but they are excellent at adapting to war conditions and coming up with cost effective weaponry. Been doing it since WWII. I'm no Russia fanboy but do acknowledge their ability to adapt to war conditions. USA innovates but has far too much focus on bleeding edge tech. China depends too much on "borrowed" tech. England, France and others tend to follow lead of USA. Russia uses a totally different war strategy. Love them or hate them but Russia knows how to get the very most from their resources when it comes to war.

On the Zaporhizhia front, Ukrainian forces are having to deal with huge numbers of mines while their demining vehicles are vulnerable to artillery, ATGMs, and Ka-52 helicopters. Ukrainian artillery is impressively attritting Russian artillery and will soon be able to effectively negate ATGM crews, too. With Hawks to take out the helicopters, the Ukrainians will finally be able to start advancing as they need to to attain their objectives.
