  • Whether you call them greeblies, greebles, or nurnies, these small plastic pieces are an essential part of modelmaking kit-bashing. For an upcoming One Day Build, Adam shows off the universal greeblie and talks about how this piece was extensively used in the ILM model shop. It's something you can't unsee when looking at classic scale models from our favorite films!

Adam Savage has the single most infectious sense of passion I've ever seen someone exude. I've never seen someone get so many chances to talk about something they love with their entire being, he's absolutely living the dream.

I know of only one other person who exudes that kind of enthusiasm and childlike wonder. This lady (an opera singer by trade) has the most honest face, and while admittedly plenty cute, radiates genuine glee at every discovery and I just adore her. th-cam.com/video/vdR6-NEoOsk/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

I like when they kit-bash the model and then scan it into the computer in high resolution for CGI work. You can get wonderful detail from CGI artists that you just let doodle on a model for as long as possible, but it starts to feel to idealized or artistically designed, like it was a painting, rather than having the limitations you would get from having real mechanical parts that have their own requirements. The newer Star Wars films have been careful to keep that look, but you see things like the Kelvin timeline Start Trek ships that are way too smooth and look more like what the concept artist drew for the design instead of what the engineers and builders actually put together.

In researching the "universal greeblie" online, I found a site that discussed what the actual, physical part was on the full size original rail gun. It is the railcar axle endcap and journal box. Given your propensity for researching stuff and tracing the history of items, I'm wondering if you have tried to add an original full size part to your collection?

    • @FindecanorNotGmail

The original has an I sound at the end, spelled "greeblie" or "greeblee".
I find that the word "greeble" is found almost only within prop/model making, and most often among _digital_ effects artists.
I would speculate that it originates from a misspelling or misreading.
The word is older than motion pictures. It means something small and unidentifiable, such as lint, grit, _bugs_ etc. An example: th-cam.com/video/OarKqZuI4KE/w-d-xo.html

Years ago I was a ritualy avid fan of Myth Busters. Life gets in the way, things change. Thought I'd come back and check up see what Mad Max Adam Savage has been up to. I started by watching a string of Comicon on TH-cam. In one episode you mentioned "Ted Talks". Adam, ty so much for connecting me to the voice of so many freak'n awesome peeps. (I don't know if, "Ted Talks" is a name such as Jethro Tull). Adam, your a wild crazy guy and an anticdote to deep thought. You provide me with a hole in the ice where I can breath and laugh my f*n ass off. gg! So, tysvm for directing me with one finger to Ted and tickling both my funny bones. I build kitbashes on a regular basis. I use model kits that parts "talk" to me. But when I have to cannibalize kits for parts, for detailing, my favorite kits are :
    - Anakin podracer AMT
    - T-34/76 russian tank, 1/48 scale from Hobby Boss
Those two are so full of detailed parts it's just insane !
But I cannibalize the Queen Mary 2 1/400 scale from revell, great deal of parts too, and the Mir Station. Used for my Star Destroyer (kitbashed from an incomplete SD model kit).

When Westwood was making Blade Runner: The Videogame they had no original props to scan and weren't allowed to use anything from the original, anyways so they had to create everything from scratch. Since everything in the movie was spare kits on top of existing buildings the lead dev came up with an idea. He said you can only use free models from the model store which was extremely limited at the time (this was the mid 90's). They basically recreated LA the same way the original set was built. It's why while you can tell it looks different the feel is the same. They had to recreate EVERYthing.

So this is the Wilhelm scream of model makers?
Isn't it weird and really cool at the same time that every nerdy niche of every industry seems to have that *one* thing that binds the galaxy together? 😃

Speaking as someone with a resin 3d printer, it's really a last resort. If I can get similar pre-molded plastic parts cheaply, they're a lot easier to work with, and I assure you mass produced plastic will always be cheaper than 3d printing (yes, 3d printing technology improves, but so does injection molding and such)

I don't know the specific terminolgy in English but the universal greeblie is the lid of the oil 'pot' that holds the axis of a set of train wheels? Cool.

So it seems like Adam is more or less done with professional prop making and has really been a nice fit for Tested with showing off his collections, doing one day builds etc. Has Jamie retired to go and hide under a big rock?

Hey Adam my name is Dylan Bianco and I’m 17. I have been trying to make a working web shooter like spider man. I came very close a couple of times but they were all bulky and over sized. I use fishing line and was thinking about using nylon 6 10 as a form of liquid webs! But finally to get to the point... I think it would be awesome if you could try and make a functional web shooter like Spider Man! You might be able to do it in a one day build episode. It would be so cool to see a child hood icon of mine make a dream come true! I challenge you to make a web shooter!

I know "greeblies" from the Starmade starship design community as the collective noun "greeble", as in, "You need more greeble on the underside of the hull."

I'd be really interested to know what Adam thinks of Games Workshop (mainly Warhammer series) and their knock-offs as a modeller.
