I have the “Classic Rock” version, I like walking around the house and being about to play without disturbing everyone in the house. It’s also great when you travel, you can jam in your hotel room if you want and no one else will hear you! Great video!!
I have the clean one and I love it. As a noiseless (headphone) and portable (play absolutely everywhere) practice device, they're great! I think I'll get one more, a different one
I own the classic rock and the blues, each distinct, each excellent. The circuits are superb, and as John says, in a good pair of headphones you feel like you're playing a stadium! My one quibble is the somewhat delicate build quality. My classic rock is a couple of years old, and I now have to wrap it in tape and fiddle with the jack to keep it from cutting out. If they offered a deluxe model in a more sturdy build, something made from stamped metal, I would pay more in a heart beat.
...have had the AC30 and TWIN versions for years and have enjoyed the heck out of them! Lots of fun. I have also used the phones jack to output to a small speaker jfks.
And dont forget the FX on the AC30 v2. I wish my guitar's input was on the front face instead of bottom edge. I wonder if i could get that mod? Probably less likely to bump the vox and easier to access its controls.
Hi John, just looking to get a vox amplug...they do 6 versions of the thing..didn't know that.. and I think there's a bass one as well.. I'm gonna get a headache deciding now..But there's a blues one so maybe no headache after all..!
I have an A/C version and also the full headphone based version (much better) but prefer to use my Rowland Micro Cube and the Ammoon wireless plugs which give an even greater range of sounds at a higher quality. Beware that played loud enough to sound good these can damage your hearing through headphones !
I might have to get one of these. Look like a lot of fun. Also good I would imagine if you're travelling and are happy to take a guitar but not lug a big heavy amp. Good Crimbo or birthday present for a guitar playing partner/friend too. 👍
I’ve had these very fiddly controls there are headphones that Vox make that basically are an amplug built into wired headphones they sound good but it’s very fiddly to adjust the parameters. I’ve since upgraded again to the Boss Waza Air which are basically a katana amp built into Bluetooth headphones with amazing real life ambient lifelike feel
First thumb up! Greetings from Germany. I am teacher and I'd feel really happy having such a positive teaching style as you have. And I am already pretty good...
Blackstar have released versions of these. They are the same as the Vox versions, but branded with Blackstar. I have the Vox AC30 and Vox IO versions and the Blackstar Bass version.
I bought an AC30 version a few years ago, with high hopes and it sounded awful, not a useable sound in the box (only my opinion) - seems like things have moved on a bit because they both sounded bloomin' marvellous here, I may have another crack at them - thanks for doing this John. Just the perfect thing when getting an amp out is just a little bit too much when all you want to do is noodle.
I still have my rockbox from the 80's. It is a big unwieldy thing LOL. By the way if you have an Ibanez SA260FM you won't be able to plug it in because the jack is buried in the body quite deep. I have a radio system which I had to buy a 6inch male to female lead so that I could use it on the Ibanez. What drum machine are you using by the way? It sounds good.
I have one they are brilliant but need to get that interface Jon , that connects to the PC, I think you mention it before which one you have but I forgot
@@JRobsonGuitar oh just to mention my new Vintage V6P Custom Spec P90 Vibrato is from a different planet, if I was closer to you, I would love to hear you to take a crack it, the problem would be getting it back LOLOLOL
I've been using a really cheap 'plexi' type one, it cost about a tenner. The quality ain't great but it does the job and means I can play at work. Plus I can plug into my lorry speakers via aux and really annoy other truckers
If you wanted to, yes. Anything sent through the PA system could be used - even a Fender Frontman 10 watt! The band I was in back in the late 90's was a bunch of loons like me. So, for several practices, the other guitarist and I used small practice amps. I think he had a Gorilla and I had a Crate. We direct lined them through the PA and they sounded great! LOL!
I've had an amplug AC30 for a while and I think it's great. I've come across a couple of mates who have initially been less impressed but after I suggested they try a different pair of headphones they changed their minds. In ears don't seem to do so well, over ears seem better. You don't need expensive ones, my Sonys which I've had about 10 years and cost under 20 quid do just great.
I HAVE THE METAL 2 AN BASS VERSION. I REALLY LIKE THE METAL ONE. THE EFFECTS ARE OK AT BEST BUT THE HIGH GAIN TONES ARE NOT BAD THERE GOOD. FOR 40.00 BUCK'S USD ITS A GREAT BUY. I'M GONNA TRY 2 RECORD SOON WITH ONE. IN TO A INTERFACE/LAPTOP THEN ILL USE SOME FREE DAW. I WANNA GET THE AC SERIES ONE.
Had one of these ok. I upgraded to the box headphones that basically are headphones with a built in amp plug so you simply plug your headphones directly into the guitar the sound is quite good but the controls are too fiddly you have to remove the headphones to adjust parameters. I’ve since upgraded again to Boss Waza headphones (basically a Katana in Bluetooth headphones) a whole new ball game way better than any of these but the Boss is expensive.
I had the same issue with the controls so I got a mono 1/4" extension cable so I can change the controls right in front of me. How do you like the Boss Waza?
Sounds great to me but the big lad doing the playing is pretty useful too. But, I do miss those little satisfied grins that you used to flash at the camera at the end of your solos. 😔 Any chance of a return to the good old days? 😃
Circa 1979 I bought a pair of practice Headphones. They looked like big chunky industrial noise protectors, and took a 9 volt battery in the top of the headband. Any guitar plugged in, sounded shite.
This happened to the one i bought last year, took it back to shop and got it replaced, same thing happened it just died , that's 2 down within 4 or 5 weeks. I really loved them when they were working, but i didn't want to have a third one go down, got myself a blackstar fly 3 for not a lot more dough.
A very slight pull on the headphone cable severed an electrical contact on the pcb and my ac30 is now toast (might try and see if I can re solder it...)
I use the headphone output on my Vox Tonelab EX, which has far more settings and sounds a lot better with a more fuller sound, these sounded a bit meh to my ears, lacking in midrange and too much treble. For £35 they are better than nothing, but most practice amps have headphone sockets.
Anybody looking for something to practice quietly should also check out the "Zoom g1 four". They are small multi effects pedals costing around 60 bucks. I think they are a better deal and do sound better than these headphones amps.
I ordered a Spark December, still waiting, when I try to find out info on delivery all I get is despatched, it's said that since Jan 4th, by the time I get it, it will be out of date and something new will be around on next day delivery.
my daughter tried the AC30 version with a cable to the Aux In of my new SPARK a few weeks back. Sounded OK. SPARK is really awesome for a practice amp. covers a lot of genres and mighty loud. Not a fan of Smart Jam. Prefer Digitech TRIO pedal (subtitles The Band Orchestrater)
Vox do indeed emulate Marshall on their Valvetronix range. If they have no compunction simulating Bletchley's finest export there, why would they be coy about doing so here?

I've got the clean one and I would recommend it.
I ordered it today. 😊
I have the clean one and I love it. As a noiseless (headphone) and portable (play absolutely everywhere) practice device, they're great! I think I'll get one more, a different one
I have the Blues version and love it, the on/off also give you clean and 2 levels of overdrive
I have the blues and the clean version and they are great.

I have the AC30 and love it 👍🏼 Thanks for your video you have really tasty playing. I enjoyed it lots. ❤🌺🦋🤩
These also come in a “blues” and a “metal” flavor. I really enjoy the blues amplug. Sounds to me like a Fender blues deluxe or Fender twin.
i'm more of a metal guy but i do like a bit of snappy poppy blues sound to a guitar🙂🙂🙂
...have had the AC30 and TWIN versions for years and have enjoyed the heck out of them! Lots of fun. I have also used the phones jack to output to a small speaker jfks.
I have the Classic Rock version, its really handy when you just want to plug in and have a strum!
Wow, effects. These are getting fancy. I took an older version on a road trip years ago. Pretty handy.
I’m in between homes right now and don’t exactly have a spot to plug in so I’m excited to see how these fare for me, cheers !
Good Morning John: another great video. Your solos are awesome. Thx for your review.
And dont forget the FX on the AC30 v2. I wish my guitar's input was on the front face instead of bottom edge. I wonder if i could get that mod? Probably less likely to bump the vox and easier to access its controls.
I bought a used Rockman back in 1984, I never did sound like Tom Sholz though.
I experienced the same thing. I plugged in and played through it. I didn't sound anything like Boston. Piece of junk!
@@starkcd Junk? I wouldn't go that far. It seems to have a serviceable 80's sound, but yeah it never sounded like Boston at all.

I have one of these, worked great when I was travelling, actually I still use the jamvox software that came with mine if Im playing into the computer.
I love those also. Sometimes I plug into my portable boombox and then you can drive somewhere cool and jam out without any AC power needed!!!
I have an A/C version and also the full headphone based version (much better) but prefer to use my Rowland Micro Cube and the Ammoon wireless plugs which give an even greater range of sounds at a higher quality. Thx for this video! Do You own the MV50 or the Superbeetle, too? So You can compare the NuTube sound to the amPlug sound?
Cheers mate, great review. I'm In.
thanks
😀😀😀i'm going to order one now

My favorite is the Boss Waza Air headphones. They are expensive, but probably the ultimate for silent practicing.
Thanks so much for posting this, I’m going to get one for sure.
Hello John, want to ask kindly, can use two effects together ?
seems some people suggest so, but no instructions how to do it.
Thanks
It's been such a long time since I reviewed this product that I honestly can't remember. Apologies.
Nice one, John - and nice playing too. :-)

Ya I had the AC30 and found it very bright
I found some pedals and a tech21 Liverpool to a DI far better for a bit of slient night Voxery.
I am impressed! I use an Ammoon Pockamp 5w practice amp, and it is just as good, but with 2 3" speakers.

my daughter uses AC30 version with an electric Les Paul ukulele. sounds best with lower gain settings
I was so intrigued by the AC30 sounds....I finally identified the tone as sounding like Oasis. Which is a good thing.

Blackstar AP2 FLY G are good too.
From Leo: I have the AC30 version. It seemed like a good idea, but at least the one I got, has so much background hiss I cannot stand to use it. .

Sounds great! Marshall was best, although I liked the Vox too.
At one point that got dangerously close to the solo from Take it Easy
Can they be used JUST as a amp? with out plugging anything in, nobody seems to say, why?
You need some kind of speaker...how can you hear anything without plugging it into something?
Could you use that in conjunction with a looper pedal John?
You should be able to. Just plug the Amplug into the output of the pedal & connect the guitar to the input of the pedal with a regular lead 👍
Well - that's quite impressive!
Do they only work with headphones?
Yes 👍
@@JRobsonGuitarWell you can output to a pair of speakers so.
