Holding onto hope in suffering

  • Ideas to take care of your mental, physical and spiritual well-being during your "lows":
    • pray!!! God isn't scared off by your big feelings. He wants to hear from you. Process your feelings with Him.
    • rest. Take a nap, close your eyes, sleep in, ask for help when you need it.
    • express your needs to your partner and ask for help when you need it (they can't meet the needs they don't know you have - express your need for rest if you're feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, etc.)
    • get outside. we need fresh air!!! go for a nature walk, a neighborhood walk, or even just sit outside for 10 minutes to breath the fresh air and get some vitamin d. (even when I'm really sick or lacking energy, I'll bundle up and just stand on the porch for a few minutes to get some fresh air and pray, think, clear my head.)
    • Journal. take time to process your emotions/thoughts. Ask yourself, "how am I feeling right now?" "why am I feeling this way?", "what do I need right now?"
    • reach out to a loved one (spouse, friend, family). talk with them if you need support, or just get together or facetime and take your mind off the hardship and focus on connecting with the people you love.
    • hydrate!!! drink your water. limit your caffeine intake (worsens anxiety and can increase dehydration).
    • move your body! take time to stretch, especially if you're chronically in pain, stressed or experience regular headaches/migranes/body aches.
    • relaxing bath. I personally love a good Epsom salt bath with essential oils, beeswax candles lit (non toxic), a good book and a big glass of water. relaxing for the body and the mind. also very soothing for anxiety to have a warm bath. at least for me it is!
    * the story of Joseph can be found in Genesis 37 and goes on til the end of Genesis.
    REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Is there a situation in your life right now that you're finding it hard to hold onto hope for?
What is your natural tendency when you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed or hurt? Is this a healthy tendency?
What healthy habits can you implement into your life to practice during your low moments?

The best Saturday begins in the bath with a cup of coffee and a good book.
