Hi. Usually, they are not supported by the chimney. The side joist are taking the weight. You will need to fix a joist to the wall and reinforce the other joist creat practically a square and put noggins in.
The joist needs to be the same as the existing if not it will be a big difference on to the cieling downstairs or the floor . Use the same timber mesurments
Hi before you hardwall it how thick did you go with the bricks that were missing. do you have to build up right to the back of the chimney breast or did you only do one course of bricks at 100mm?
Hi there, we are in a similar position to how you are right at the very beginning of the video. Some of our bricks have been cut in half so half remains in the wall and we have to try to make sure that they do not stick out too far or the wall will not be flat. It looks like this chimney breast may be similar? If so Do you have any tips for how to ensure the bricks are far enough back before beginning to make good? Thanks
hi.you can see in the video my streat edge, i am going up and down on the side walls and make sure that nothing is going to stop it in the middle where the chimney was removed
@@gordonclark2985 hi Gordon, we have got it close to flat using an SDS drill on hammer only setting using the chisel shank bit. It’s been labour intensive but we’re at the stage now where we need to ensure it’s at least flush (or less in the case of some of the half bricks ) ready to SBR / PVA and then hopefully plaster but the last bit of chipping away we haven’t done yet. Have you got any other thoughts / suggestions or are you on a similar approach?
@edd1628 my chimney was removed a week ago, was not expecting there to be such uneven bricks plus I'm left with a decent size hole in my floor. I've been searching the net for another DIYer to say that it's straight forward process before I start it next week. I don't know if it would be easier to batten the wall with new plasterboard on, can I ask why have you decided to try an even out brickwork instead of putting up new battens?
That looks fantastic. You'd never know a fireplace was there 🙂
Yep I've done my best
@@How2Extreme I can see that 🙂
Thanks for dropping by
Hi, how would you make good if the joists were in the other direction? So they were previously being supported by the chinney brickwork?

Would 2x6 joists be sufficient as a replacement?
Also, did you add in 3 new joists?

Have you attempted to flatten out your wall yet as I'm in a similar position
