      Harmony is a very malleable word they coexisted for 1300 yearsthey were no stranger to persecution but usually they were allowed to live in peace as long as they accepted their place as inferiors. How well they coexisted depended on the time and place overall but not always theyunder Islamic rule than they did in Europe especially if you compare it to the Holocaust or medieval Christian Europe. There's of course ezceptions

      @@onewildandcrazyguy9213 Not really in Morocco. Because Morocco had a Jewish population long before Islam. Overall, even under Islamic rule, there were whole Jewish cities and villages in Morocco. Also, don't forget that Islam in Morocco wasn't the same Islam you see in the Middle East. Religious beliefs in Morocco were heavily influenced by Berber religions. It wasn't secular, but it favored a certain liberty of worship. There were incidents from time to time but there was no persecution. Also, the reconquesta played a role in both the tensions between the populations and the harmony. Sometimes the Jews and the Moors (Not sure if I'm using the correct term here) were united by this "catastrophy" as they were kicked from their homes in Iberia.
      Overall, the Jewish experience in Morocco is unique. And I'm lead to believe that the Moroccan social liberalism in cities like Casablanca was due to the existence of different communities in the city. Now, it seems like the 70s and 80s were far more prosperous and progressive than today's Casablanca.

      @@geerenmo Ahahaha you know nothing about history, don't worry I'll help you to educate yourself a little bit.. there's nothing as "arabism" that's literally our culture;if you want to talk about "Arabization" the Arabs have literally Arabized the whole world because they did trade and were in close contact with the whole world known at the time, they were really influental... before North Africa was occupied by the Arabs it was in fact occupied over the years by many European empires.. the only difference is that: while the Middle Easterns had the decency to treat North Africans as their equals, Europeans used to treat them as animals, and this factor contributed to the two civilizations to learn from each other, North Africans and Middle Easterners are longtime friends, which is why we consider ourselves brothers even though genetically we are not; so I don't really see what you describe to be "a brutal occupation" .. In fact "Arab" is not an ethnicity, it's like saying that "American" is an ethnicity (well just to let you know there are a lot of "Americans" from different ethnicities ) The same thing goes to "Arabs", arabs are a group of people who speak the same language and who share very similar traditions and cultures, but from the genetic point of view they are not always the same...Somalia is considered an Arab country, but you obviously don't connect it to the Middle East because they are black (although there are many black middle eastern), instead it is easier for you to connect North Africans to the Middle East, because generally speaking they have the same brown complexion, however, from the genetic point of view they are different, North Africans are for the most part Berbers, or Africans native to North Africa... surprised right? Ahahah you know the world is not just black or white, there are also non-black native Africans...

    • @itsfede4550
      @itsfede4550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geerenmo as for the Jews you certainly do not share the same DNA with those you think are your "ancestors", because, in the course of history, from that which was a small group of believers led by the prophet Moses, other people joined and CONVERTED to Judaism ...So without a shadow of a doubt most Israelis today cannot be connected to those of 2000 years ago.. Plus if you really want to talk about the Jews in the Diaspora era, many of these Jews converted to Christianity and Islam, so I really believe that many of the Muslims, Christians and Jews who lived peacefully in Palestine are more authentic than all of those people that call themselves "Israelis" nowadays... But most importantly, we are talking about 2000 years ago, in 2000 years there have been many empires that were born and then destroyed ... You realize that it is nonsense, in the same way you did, Italians can re-occupy almost the whole world and say that 2000 years ago everything belonged to the Roman Empire, but that's not possible, the world doesn't work like that...and this would lead us to ask another question ... who existed before the kingdom of Judea? hahaha because surely there were other populations before you, but you think you were the first, but yet history doesn't work like that...

    The co-existence was the same in every place - periods of co-existence alternating with periods of persecution. It wasn't all bad generally, but it also wasn't all good. How do I know? I lived in the former Soviet Union. And while my family had many good non-Jewish friends, there were also many incidents of overt and hidden discrimination, of verbal abuse, of having to go daily to school past a bunch of gates with swastikas and writing telling us to go elsewhere. So, one does not exclude the other.

      Vincent Olterigo same was here in Morocco too. Ups and downs. This is just serve a narrative of an illusion of exceptionalism in Morocco for political reasons, to say hey the Arabs and jews can leave peacefully together. But much of the tolerance came from Berbers who never was very religious and from the late Kings who gave Jews preferable treatment during the lawlessness era (sibba).

    • @imane867

      @@gostavoadolfos2023 to compare the treatment of the Jews of Morocco to that of the jews in the Soviet union is frankly comical.
      There is an exceptional component to the treatment of the Jews in Morocco and the assimilation of moroccan Jews to the moroccans lifestyle. Denying that would be the illusion.
      Of course; there's good and bad everywhere, in jews, in moroccans... but as a whole, without cherry picking places or timelines, the jewish experience in Morocco was far better than that in any other country. The laws in place, the remaining jews and still standing Hebrew institutions still attest to it.

    For those unfamiliar with the customs of Passover, a little background on what the man means around 8:30 when he says the 'Arabs brought back their flour'. During Passover you're not to eat leavened bread but also you have to clear the entire house of a variety of restricted grain products. Instead of simply throwing these items out, you might instead 'sell' them to a non-jewish neighbor (for a insignificant, symbolic amount, like a dollar, so it becomes their property) or give them away with the idea in place that they will give the items back (or you'll 'buy' them back) at the end of the passover holiday.
    So as a thanks they are saying that they hold a mimouna feast for both themselves and their neighbors who helped them observe their customs.

      "Morocco had always recognized and protected the Jewish population" Morocco has treated Jews better than most Muslim territories. but the Jews of Morocco are still no stranger to anti-Jewish violence, persecution, and humiliation. i can list some examples if you want.
      not trying to be a downer, i just have a problem with historical inaccuracy, thats all.
      i loved the rest of your comment though :) i have many Moroccan, Muslim friends :) my Friend Amir (a Moroccan Muslim) jokingly refers to me has his "Brother From a Jewish Mother" :)
      and as for what you said about the Moroccan gov issuing citizenship to Israeli Jews of Moroccan descent, i did not know that. could you tell me a bit more about it?

      Beni Habibi I am a Moroccan Jew and born and raised . Yes you can quote many persecutions about the Jews because our rabbanims and historians compilled them. Would you be able to quote Muslims persecutions on Muslims? No because we do not care about the suffering of other people. I was born and raised in Morocco, and even we are still a minority, we live in our country and we contribute to it. And for the Moroccan ID and passport, Moroccan Jews are having the same law than Muslims. Meaning if you can prove that your dad or your mom is Moroccan you can have your citizenshi too.

      Naomi Aboukassis too bad for me then. while i respect the Amazigh, i don't have a drop of their blood in my body. i am an Israeli.
      if you consider yourself a Moghrabi, then good for you :D
      just like i am an Israeli, and if you are Jewish, you are welcome to come live here as well, IF you decide upon it.
      hopefully, i can visit Morocco if our countries make peace with eachother in the future.

    Hello Sir;
    Many Thanks for this video. Being an Algerian Muslim who never dealt with Algerian Jews , I sometimes wonder how Algerian jews who left Algeria after it's got its independance live now in Israel; and why did they leave their mother land ; were they persecuted or was it their own choice . I was told that there's a town called Sderot in Israel where many algerians live ; it'es even called "the little Algeria" Could you please make a similar video about Algerian Jews.
    Thank you.

    • @snakey934Snakeybakey
      @snakey934Snakeybakey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      most of them left Algeria before it gained independence from France, back when it was known as "French Algeria".
      Jews were not always treated well in Algeria, there were at least 3 major Pogroms in Algiers, as well as rising tensions from both the Muslims of Algeria, and the French colonialist in the late 1940s.
      there are currently around 100 Jews still left in Algeria.

      Having visit both countries I know what I am talking about. Moroccans and Algerians to me they look the same, they speak the same, they're culturally the same I think, but Moroccans tend to have an extra loving component for outsiders, that Algerians are lacking, probably because of the government regime, I know in Algeria the media shows Moroccans as the enemy for Algerians, form what I heard, because of their army dictatorship who is in control of everything in the country, that doesn't mean all Algerians are the same, there is always good and bad in every culture, but generally speaking Moroccans are more liked and loved than Algerians outside of Africa. Peace to both countries. Just my Opinion.
