  • My first day out with the Canon R6 looking for wildlife to photograph on safari. I meet some guinea fowl, run into a tortoise, pass a rhino and stumble across a marsh owl - all while talking photography.

My name is Will Goodlet. I am a wildlife, landscape and astro photographer working in the African Safari business. I spend my time exploring the dusty roads of Africa with my Land Rover, Basil.
I've been taking photographs for 40 years, first in Hong Kong, where I grew up and later to follow my dreams of a life photographing Africa.

I just want to say that the intro to this video is FABULOUS. Actually, the entire video is FABULOUS. Thank you. All my life I have yearned to see African animals. Not sure I ever will. But, I can live vicariously through your terrific work. As it happens I am mulling over a new camera and the R6 is on the short list. So, I will watch your review with great interest.

Very interesting to hear your thoughts and experiences of using the latest Canon mirrorless offerings. Take care of yourself and huge thanks for sharing these lovely films with the rest of us. Hi Stephen, thanks for the concern and the comment! I just haven't been out there. I still can't really travel (for domestic reasons) so I hope to explore more local places on the channel.
That's actually the old Benro S6 that I had. It's a pain because there is no drag on the pan. I need to replace it for left side shots.

It's really nice to have you back on your channel. Loved your intro video with great music. We both regularly watch your videos here and have been worried about not hearing from you, especially with the recent events in South Africa. I do use a R5 and have already invested in some RF lenses like the 70-200 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 and the mighty 100-500, even though it hurt my pockets. I was lucky enough to test the 100-500mm to shoot grizzly bears and the lens is amazing. (the animal eye autofocus worked great for bears and birds). I wish I could invest in a r6 back up like you did but I spent enough money for now. We're supposed to go to a Tanzania safari in November, so we are going to binge-re-watch your videos to get ready for it. Thanks! Looking forward to your next videos!

Hi Will, Great to see you back with some more great images. Your following has been missing you. Just a note about the R6 and peoples views on battery life. At a recent Moto X event I took 1303 Craw/Jpeg images on a fully charged battery and had 30% charge left, to my mind that's very acceptable.

Loved the intro, so cool (who song is that?) It looks like you may have the RF 800mm F11, I have had it a while and although it cannot match the real expensive big primes, it’s been awesome. I think the real advantage to it is it’s portability and it’s ability to record some great photos at a reasonable price.

    Hi Will
Nice to have you back. I have missed your videos. I’ve just bought the R5 and am using it with my 100-400mm with an ef to rf adaptor. I have been thinking of getting a teleconverter to increase the reach a bit but hear that they reduce sharpness of the image. Have you found this ? I would be interested in your opinion.

Hi, Will, another excellent and informative video, I was especially pleased having recently purchased the Canon R6,
Like you and the R5, issues of Adobe lack of profiles for both cameras, So I was quick to download and use your superb Will Goodlet profiles, immediately the ease of use and superb results were a revelation,
Easy to install, and the results amazing, making my faith in purchasing the R6 a real asset, I shall look forward to all your new videos, I highly recommend anyone who has purchased the R5, OR R6, to do the same Thank you so much

I very much envy your access to the wildlife to be found in South Africa. I live in New Zealand, somewhere I feel very appreciate of, since we have been generally very successful in be secluded from the health impacts of COVID. We recently had an incursion of the Delta variant, but again our government went for elimination, something supported by over 85% of the population, and we are in the midst of a lock-down in Auckland (the rest of NZ less so) to stamp the thing out. Being on an isolated set of islands has its benefits, but the international travel challenges have put paid to my plans to work on my bucket list of places to shoot - including parts of the African continent. I had shot quite a bit in Asia, Canada and the US and really enjoy working with macro mammals. NZ is rich in bird life, but that is not the same. I hope one day I CAN make that trip to your part of the world.
I like the diagrams you post showing the habitats of animals to which you are referring.
I've been shooting for about 40 years now, starting with Canon A-1 and Nikon F3 cameras while I started as a technical photographer and moved on to travel and stock photography before setting back to other aspects. Over the years, I have amassed a fairly large menagerie of gear (I rarely sell a body or lens, I must admit). With the challenges you referred to as regards using long lenses, I have the Canon EF 100-400L MkII (sometimes with the MkIII 1.4x extender, but also shoot with the Sigma 150-600 and 60-600 lenses, which I find very good. I have been using Canon 7D MkI and II, and 5D MkIII, IV and DsR bodies. I have to say the Sigma lenses are great and give me the reach I am looking for without an extender, and coupled with the 7DII, give me a FoV of about 960mm - which is great.
I recently got a couple of R6 bodies, along with the RF 24-105L, 100-500L and 24-240 (which does amazingly well!). I have an R5 waiting to be delivered when our restrictions are relaxed. I will look at your video on the R6 and respond there.
Thanks again for your interesting videos and insight, I have subscribed! :-)

So many beautiful animals to appreciate and adore. My family actually has guineafowl on their property in Texas (U.S.A.); and we had nine of these beautifully feathered fowl on the farm I lived on as a child for one year in Louisiana (U.S.A.) .
That entertaining party animal that appears at 10:31 brought me a bit of joy this morning. I can relate! 😀 While most of the time I tend to be a loner, keeping to myself, I've often been the silly excited dancing girl that got the party started when everyone seemed content sipping their drinks and chatting about who knows what.
I also loved the audio from beginning to end! This video could almost be used as a type of meditation for me; or at least a mood elevator.
It is inspiring to know that you are partially blind in your left eye and you still capture such amazingly beautiful images. I have thinning in one of my retinas. I've been seeing yellow orange spots. Just this morning, I was wondering what I could possibly do if I lost sight in one eye, or entirely. It seems that would be the end of this life for me. It seems that everything about my life involves beauty imagery and the sense of sight.

Hi Carolyn thanks for watching and apologies taking so long to reply.
Yeah my dogs usually can't wait to get outside in the mornings but not at 4am :) Interesting to hear that Guineafowl have made it all the way to Louisiana and Texas - I guess they'd like it there too and are used to dodging marauding canids and cats.
I've always wanted to capture Springbok pronking (it's Afrikaans for showing off) I still haven't got a photograph of them doing it. One day!
I've been mostly blind in that eye since birth - I think it's easier if it's from birth as we learn to compensate (my mother lost an eye and also learned). But I still spend a lot of time walking head first into painful objects and god forbid I need to look under a cupboard or bed on that side!
I really hope your eyesight doesn't get any worse and the deterioration can be halted.
      Take care!

Welcome back. I'm also a hybrid shooter with the R5. I I tend to shoot video with the RF 100-500 lens, wide open (f7.1) at 4k 60fps. I just set the speed to give me the correct exposure, so no messing about with ND Filters. I don't worry about the 180 degree rule. Does it really make that much difference for fast action wildlife videos?

Hi Dave, it’s very well suited to it especially if you won’t be photographing in extreme environments and if you already have long glass.
It suits a longer focal length than something like a 7d2 and R5 because those cameras are more croppable.

whar lens r u usinng on the r6 looks a beast im not a pro but very passionate severely sight impaired/blind photographer uk based, i currently use nikon z7 and 24-200 as i like to capture not just wildlife but i hired a sigma 150-600 but recently sold it as afterwards realised more pricey lenses less weight compared to that, i then recently hired a 500mm pf les via adapter too to try out for a recent filming piece to come out on bbc winter watch at end of nect month, so looking at other options i either stay with nikon but wait a lot longer for lenses for wildlife or swap brands either fuji or canon or other brands

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Alex, I use two lenses. A canon 100-400 Mark ii and a Canon 400 f2.8. I like the 400mm f2.8 as a compromise because it is wide enough to photograph large animals like elephant and I can use a teleconverter to shoot at 560mm or 800mm at reasonable quality.
Many people use 500mm f4 in South Africa, it's kind of a standard. 600mm is better for birds. But I find the 400mm offers a different kind of shot and because it is rarely used by wildlife togs it can lend the image a different look and differentiate it slightly. I wouldn't recommend it in the UK, it's probably too short for what you need.
A lot will depend where you use the lens, and how you travel with it. 600mm F4 is hard to travel with - so the 150-600, 200-500, 500pf etc.. are all good options for that. I think we all have different requirements and it's about finding the best compromise for us and how and where we photograph. You wouldn't catch me lugging my big 400mm around the UK countryside on foot for example :)

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Steve yes sure - I use it principally for photography on a 400 f2.8. I have a second body R6 for acquiring video (because it needs filters etc attached that impacts speedy photographic capture).
I also have a 3rd body (7d2) which, in an ideal world I would use with a zoom lens (100-400) for grab shots or wider shots.
At the moment I am trying to fill both the video and grab shot role with the R6 using a drop in filter system that is more easily removed.

We have had various levels of lockdown since March 2020. The main problem for me is the curfew that has been in place. You can leave the house at 4am this is too late to really go anywhere in summer (sunrise) in winter it’s a bit better. But I can only get to very nearby places.
