MusicWorks - Grade 3
A descriptive overture based on the life-cycle of our ever-changing planet, this piece was written in commemoration of the tenth annivesary of the Mt. St. Helens tragedy. It is organized into five interconnected sections: Vistas; Warning; Void and Renewal.

In 1989, our Middle School (Eisenhower/Everett, WA) band teacher, Mr. Irons, commissioned John Higgins to write this piece for us marking the 10 year anniversary of the eruption of Mount St Helens. Mr. Higgins made the trip out to Everett and spent several days working on it with us leading up to its debut. He spent some time explaining the inspiration behind the piece, and showed us how he wrote it digitally on his computer. Pretty cutting edge stuff at the time! We first played it in the Spring of 1990 at Everett Civic Auditorium with Mr. Higgins conducting Regenesis and several other of his tunes/arrangements. I played clarinet. The whole thing was recorded and I still have the cassette squirelled away somewhere. Mr. Irons and Mr. Higgins treated us like professional musicians and the whole experience was just one giant core memory.
So I'm in middle school and I'm playing with the highschool band for the first time ever. I play the organ part of this song and our concert is tomorrow night. Wish me luck, and if you are currently working on this piece, I wish you luck as well.
This just happened to me today! I was first chair concert band in percussion. I had so much fun!

I am playing flute on this and 4:09 always gives me chills.
I have to play that flute solo but the thing is I'm used to playing high notes and I had never in my life played the lowest note for flute so I'm really struggling right now 😭

I played this piece in middle school back in ‘96. The melody just popped into my head today, so I decided to look it up. Love the memories this brings back.
Isaac and his mother lived alone in a small house on a hill. Isaac kept to himself, drawing pictures and playing with his toys as his mom watched Christian broadcasts on the television.
Life was simple, and they were both happy.
That was, until the day Isaac's mom heard a voice from above: "Your son has become corrupted by sin! He needs to be saved!"
"I will do my best to save him, my Lord," Isaac's mother replied, rushing into Isaac's room, removing all that was evil from his life.
Again, the voice called to her:
"Isaac's soul is still corrupt! He needs to be cut off from all that is evil in this world and confess his sins."
"I will follow your instructions, Lord. I have faith in thee," Isaac's mother replied, as she locked Isaac away in his room, away from the evils of the world.
One last time, Isaac's mom heard the voice of God calling to her:
"You have done as I asked, but I still question your devotion to me. To prove your faith, I will ask one more thing of you."
"Yes, Lord. Anything," Isaac's mother begged.
"To prove your love and devotion, I require a sacrifice. Your son Isaac will be this sacrifice. Go into his room and end his life as an offering to me, to prove that you love me above all else!"
"Yes, Lord," she replied, grabbing a butcher's knife from the kitchen.
Isaac, watching through a crack in the door, trembled in fear. Scrambling around his room to find a hiding place, he noticed a trapdoor to the basement, hidden under his rug. Without hesitation, he flung open the hatch just as his mother burst through his door and threw himself down into the unknown depths below.

lmao i had percussion 2 for this, so i had the triangle, crash cymbal, sus. cymbal, tambourine (tho my band teacher just told me not to play that), wind chimes, & gong. it was crazy at one or two parts trying to go from one to another within one count but i got to play the gong during the explosion so it was greaaaatt
