  • Note: Vertical lines for the windows and doors should also tilt - - Just use the main vertical lines as reference to how much they should tilt.

    Hi Teoh, I am also a self taught watercolourist and only recently in May started urban sketching and I tried to a least do one a day, and your videos made me start sketching, which I enjoy very much as I don't have a lot of free time. The only thing I cannot do well is sketching people...oh well. Thank you for your videos.

    I'm also a self taught sketcher (and watercolourist) and your videos are very helpful. This is a great tutorial, clear instructions, and very timely for me, I'm looking for ways to "lighten up" and will add this tilt method to my list! Thanks as well to Marek for identifying the Post Office in Fergus, Ontario - I live about 30 minutes from there and keep meaning to go there for some "Urban Sketching" but haven't made it yet this summer. Thanks for all your videos, they are so great!

    The design that has the verticals not straight
    has a little more charm because less perfect.
    And yet the proportions are respected. So looks like the favorite.

    Hey Teoh, this is the most helpful video about urban sketching I have seen so far. Thank you so much for that! I only started urban sketching last year and there was a drawing by a fellow sketcher which just had a fantastic perspective - now I realise how he achieved that!
    you inspired me now to play around with different "tiltings", eg, inwards, outwards, etc. and see what impression they create...
    Thank you so much!

      Thanks. Perhaps in the future. You don't need to know perspective to draw perspective. You just need to be good at proportions and measuring. Maybe this video may help th-cam.com/video/lRfa9Pat0LQ/w-d-xo.html

    It's called 3-point prespective. And your middle building and right building don't fit to each other... they have different focus points. basically all vertical lines should be going to one imaginary focus point.. it means all angles of vertical lines should be according to that

    I am new at trying to draw and sketch and enjoy your videos very much, thank you for explaining. Can you please show how you do the watercolours on your sketches as it seems that you go over the lines yet it looks so good.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any special techniques to apply watercolour. Important thing is to use waterproof ink. With regards to mixing colours, you can check out this video th-cam.com/video/gBo68CzS5eM/w-d-xo.html

    Very interesting technique. Have you tried distorting buildings in other ways? I think Lapin has some that bulge out in strange ways. Thanks for the clear demonstration.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sharon Nolfi Lapin distorts buildings to fit into the page. There are no rules. Sometimes he tilts them left, right or turns them into a spiral.

    • @elsagrace3893
      @elsagrace3893 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I see it is that the buildings are not distorted at all. The perspective is shifted only.

    As someone who wants to learn how to sketch outdoors like this, would you suggest/recommend/think it's okay to sketch from a photo like this? It seems like good practice? Thanks, Teoh!

    • @teohyc

      For practice it's alright. But there are differences between drawing outdoors and from photos. The following video explains th-cam.com/video/XIhEiP0TvGE/w-d-xo.html

    Teoh, I noticed in the Darman Sketch images that he does some washes entirely in ink, no watercolor. Do you think he brings a jar of ink to do this? Or is there a cleaner, more portable way to bring ink for doing washes outdoors? Thanks!

      +Teoh Yi Chie Oh wow that's fantastic and very interesting to read! Thank you! It looks like he might have a water brush filled with ink. It's in some of the photos at the end sitting next to a water-filled water brush. In reading this I also thought of maybe trying an ink pan, like you can buy for sumi-e.

    Nice. The funny thing is, that the photo probably was carefully shot with an expensive tilt-shift lens to avoid artifacts and the drawing, inherently free of these problems, is simulating inferior lens and shooting skills...
