I have friends who work in construction. They're building these million-dollar houses with cheap stucco and other materials that aren't going to last. Put up nice chandeliers and granite and people buy it regardless. It says something when the guys who built it say they'd never live in. The automobile industry is guilty of this, too, with their cheaper materials being used.

My 1920 craftsman home has petrified wood for a frame. Updated to sheetrock, and put in 2x6 supports in the floor. Pex plumbing with stainless steel supply lines. Insulated the fuk out of it. All paid off in 4 years. I'll live here forever.

I used my Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo for 7 years until I was forced to delete so many apps to keep it running that it just wasn't useful to me anymore. I purchased a Galaxy A54 because I wasn't forking over the money for the S23 at the time. My boyfriend used his iPhone 6 until the cracked screen made it impossible to use. He's now using my old Galaxy S5 Neo because he only wants it for calls, texting, and Facebook. We keep cell phones until they DIE!

My dryer just broke after 3 years right after the waranty expired. I remember when i was a kid all of our appliances were from the 70's and nothing ever broke, they would just keep running. If you think stuff isnt intentionally made to break down after a certain period of time then you are living in a fantasy land.
And for all the dupes who thought offshoring all of our manufacturing because foreign countries made stuff cheaper was a good idea, this is the future you chose. I'd rather pay more for something that lasts forever than constantly have to buy new stuff because it keeps breaking down. You think youre getting a deal but in the long run you spend much more money

Every product is getting less reliable and more difficult to self repair. Planned obsolescence. They want you to buy a new one or have to take it to a repair shop where they have invested in a 10K computer to make the repair. There is a right to repair movement that's gaining in popularity.

I work in tech. The commodity shrinkflation (Peanutbutter etc) is out of our control but our mindless consumerism making tech "obsolete" is so dumb and wasteful as you pointed out. I can have just a fun of a time gaming on a Sega Genesis as a PS5, and I listen to music on vintage stereo equipment from over 45 years ago that sounds better than any bluetooth bullshit that will break in a couple years.

Planned opulence was invented when the light bulb never burnt out and they needed to sell lightbulbs so they planned to make it burn out after 10,000 hours..
Shrinkflation is when the product gets smaller but the price gets bigger.

So, I get excited when I go to look at this 2016 Kia Sorento because IT'S GOT A CD PLAYER!!!! It doesn't take much to make me happy! 😂 I really don't like being forced to listen to music on my phone or laptop and download this and that. So, now after people have chucked all their vinyl, cassettes, and CD's because they're obsolete...you get to pay $45 for one album on vinyl because it's all back in style! P.S. I got an added bonus of heated seats in the new car...when you live in Newfoundland, Canada...your shivering shrunken arse will thank you during the winter 'cause it's frickin' cold up here b'y! 🤣🤣🤣

Myself and other goth folk that aren't making bank shop in thrift stores alot and like old tech. I do have a flat screen TV but will not give up my cd/dvd collection for nothing because I can watch it until I wear it out for FREE WHENEVER I WANT. My apt is commercial space with no kitchen or closets. I talked the landlord into it and that he would have free security on site all night since it was a bad neighborhood until we moved in and he cleaned it up. I have a coffee maker, flat air fryer oven that does everything, a toaster and a two burner stove top. I pay a reasonable amount considering utilities are included and he's an electrician so when the power goes out, he can fix it. Use your mind and open your mouth and make shit happen. I remember when all TV sets had what was called a picture tube (AKA a CRT: Cathode Ray Tube).
That was the thing that stuck out the back of TV sets back in the day, and they had a curved, thick glass front surface where the image was made.
It was a big vacuum tube with a heating element inside of it (you could see the orange glow from this heating element if you looked for it), and on the oldest TVs there were a slew of smaller vacuum tubes used in the video oscillator and audio circuitry as well, all with their own heating elements glowing away.
These all added up to heat building up inside the TV and after a while, the heat would cause a part to go kaput, and mom and dad would call the TV repair shop to schedule the TV repair man to come up to the house in his repair van.
So, the once common sight of a TV repair van driving to somebody's house is another thing that has gone obsolete.

Yep. Bought a high-end washer and dryer set two years ago. *Right* after warranty expired, washer went to shit. I've had two repair guys look at it. First one was "Maytag Guy" who couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Second one was old school repair guy who replaced the control board. That was last week; even HE doesn't know if that will fix it because, in his words, "All of this is shit these days." So, who knows if it's a long-term - meaning, these days, *maybe* a few months - fix.
Cost so far to "repair" a washing machine I paid $900 for two years ago: $500, so far.
Going forward, gonna buy the absolute cheapest thing I can buy, knowing I will have to replace it within two years.

Her car, which is now mine, has a little over 300,000 miles. Electronic leather heated seats and automatic seat belts are still in good shape. The engine timing belt was just changed for its second time. Stater motor and intake gasket was changed back in 2010 and still holding on. It also still has the original spark plugs. All other fluids and filters have been changed regularly. Check Engine light fails to turn on but still works on Accessories Mode. The parking brake pedal is shot but who gives a f...

I’m from Puerto Rico. PR is a US territory. Most of the houses are made of concrete, including the roofs. A concrete house requires low maintenance. You don’t have to replace the roof. All you have to do is apply a treatment (similar to paint). It costs between $1,000 and $3,000. It can last for 3 years or more. House insurance is low-cost because it’s a concrete house, not a wooden house. But the government wants to keep it that way to protect the private interests of banks, construction companies, and home insurance companies. They’re making a lot of money with that.

We have to take control to combat obsolescence. I know I have bought VHS and then DVDs of the same movie. As soon as I could though, I switched to pirated downloads/rips stored on hard drive, the perfect format. Initially I was ripping DVDs. Then as some movies switched to 1080p, I just downloaded and replaced with the better quality for free. Today I am again replacing those 1080p movies with 4K. Unlike when upgrading from VHS to DVD, there is no additional cost to me, I don't have to completely rebuy the right to watch, I just download and replace.

Tablets specifically are horrible, it is criminal. There's NO technical reason why a tablet can be lightning fast on youtube when you buy it and 3 years later it can barely open the app.

Apple is trash with horrible operating systems that dont let you customize anything, and they make it so you cant repair your own stuff like a PC. It's like they are made for teenage girls and old boomers who dont know how to use a computer.
Why anyone buys apple products is a mystery to me. I think it's some kind of strange status symbol for midwits

Architecture geek here. Those ancient stonework homes in Europe took a long time to build - digging out and hewing stone slabs in the case of cathedrals, very $$$ and labor intensive -and when stuff cracks, leaks, etc, you can't just go to Home Depot or whatever they have there -it's very expensive custom craftsmanship to get repaired. BTW, for waterproofing, they used a lot of LEAD, which is toxic AF, but it was easy to use, pliable with a low melting point, so widely-used until people wondered why people were getting diseases from lead poisoning.
Also, electrical wires run along the interior walls in conduit, not inside, as does plumbing, heating, oh, and most don't have A/C! People have been moving out in droves for better and more modern conditions, sometimes leaving whole villages behind.
The big thing that happened in the US was after WWII, when the GI's returned home to start families, etc, there were nowhere near enough houses, so wood-frame houses became a thing, e.g. Levittown, NY and PA were famous big neighborhoods. Then came CBS -concrete block, stucco here in FL which was low maintenance and stronger, except the roofing was still wood. Maybe they'll last about 50 years if you replace the roof twice ... but, most people move around for work or other reasons, and the avg time in any given home is about 13 years anyway, so it doesn't make sense to build stuff to last forever. We won't last forever either.

I've worked on stuff since I was a kid with my dad and I remember going with him to buy new models back in the 90s and when my dad had old 80s stuff it worked like it should. Fast forward to today I bought a new model Craftsman snowblower that crapped out not long after I bought it new and I could not for the life of me find the exact replacement part that I needed for my model. I was so pissed I just said F it and went with an older model Ahrens and it's worked since the 80s with replacement parts here and there sourced locally in my state. I'm a homeowner as well and I've had trouble finding parts for dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves, etc. I think this is being done intentionally to force people to buy new crap that craps out not too long afterwards just to make some shmuck rich especially ones overseas. We CAN build this shit hell I could teach my 5 year old with enough curiosity how to build something. Our leaders have given up the game for money. Plain and simple.

great vid Jack I agree with you 100% When I built my house in 2009 I did the best I could to build it as durable as possible but the lumber was crap twisted cracked etc I had to always choose the lesser of the "two evils" I think sheet rock is garbage when back in the day they used wood battens on the interior which would literally last a couple hundred years. one more thing I had to watch the contractors like hawks while they built this place because they are all apes you turn your back on them they will cut corners on Re-bar screws nails vibrating the concrete fully etc.

I'm in the appliance industry. Do not buy fancy appliances. They're all junk! Buy the extended 3 year warranty plan for $50. You'll need it! Buy the most basic ones. Speed Queen classic washers n dryer are worth the money though. Buy those if you have $2,500 to spend on a laundry set. Or go buy a basic washer n dryer that's over 15/20 years old. If you have old appliances then keep them. Keep them fixed as long as you can. Also buy basic, cheap , TVs. Those $2,000 Samsungs n LGs are crap too. When your TV breaks in 3 or 5 years... throw it out.

I recently had to buy a stacker washer/dryer. I bought an Electrolux. It seemed to have good reviews. I think they own Frigidaire?
I haven't got to use it yet b/c I'm still waiting on the damn power company to hook up power at my new place, but just unpacking it, it looked extremely well built. Its a front load washer and dryer. The damned dryer is 8 cuft. Its huge.
I looked at Speed Queen, but a stacker is like $5K. I knew not to buy LG or Samsung appliances. My mom had nothing but trouble with her Samsung washer and it wouldn't even properly wash clothes. There would still be sand in the clothes after washing. No agitator either.
