India vs China (2023): Comparing Asia's Two Largest Startup Ecosystem

  • In this detailed video, we take a look at and compare the startup ecosystems of India and China.
In the last decade or so, China, which many people still call the world’s factory, has actually slowly weaned its economy off of manufacturing, and diversified into tech, with BATs leading the charge, that’s Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent.
In 2021, Chinese startups raised a whopping 130.6 billion dollars in venture capital which is three times more than the 42 billion dollars that Indian startups raised during that same year.
India, which is the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, raised 42 billion dollars in 2021, which was the best year on record for Indian venture funding, was more than 15 billion dollars less than what Chinese startups raised all the way back in 2015.
Talking about valuations of single startups, India today has four decacorns - that’s companies that have a valuation of more than 10 billion dollars, and these companies are Flipkart, Byju’s, Swiggy, and Nykaa and if we take all four of these companies and combine their valuations, they’re actually still less valuable than China’s single-most valuable hectacorn, Bytedance, which is known for its flagship short video-sharing app TikTok, and is currently valued at a whopping 300 billion US dollars.
Talking about investor's trust in the ecosystem, India has a much more open ecosystem when compared to China. Flipkart is owned by Walmart, but ByteDance’s ownership isn’t clear. Yes, they have raised upwards of 9 billion dollars from investors, local and international, but how much control do those investors actually have over their China-based portfolio companies? It’s hard to imagine international stakeholders voting against the desires and agenda of the CCP.
Taling about protecting their local businesses, both India and China are pretty ahead on that. India for eg, has banned Chinese companies like TikTok and Shein. Thanks to protectionism, startups like Moj, MX taka tak, Chingari, and Josh have been able to thrive. China also banned merican companies like Facebook, Google, and Dropbox. Other American companies like Tesla, Apple, Starbucks, and Nike have a strong presence in China, but are also very careful to play by the CCP’s rules.
India however, is ahead of China when it comes to growth in minting unicorns. The rate of growth among unicorns in India, 36% growth from 2019 to 2020 and over 100% growth in 2021 and if you take a look at China’s growth, 8% growth in 2020 and just 14% growth in the year 2021, India is clearly ahead. AAnd according to Inc42’s ‘The State of Indian Startup Ecosystem Report’ India will beat China to become number two in terms of total unicorns by the year 2025.
When we talk about which sectors are dominant in both countries, most valued startups in India come from Ecommerce, followed by Fintech and SaaS. For China, the leading sectors are Finance, Internet and Logistics.
In terms of where this startups are coming from, In India, most of the companies with a valuation upwards of a billion dollars are located in Bengaluru followed by Delhi NCR and Mumbai. On the other hand, startups in China are located along the east coast, such as in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
Beijing is known for its booming artificial intelligence, big data, and fintech startups and about 70% of the country’s potential unicorns are located here. Standing up to Beijing is Bengaluru which has a mix of sectors, ranging from e-commerce to fintech to agritech and EVs.
In the last few years however, focus is shifting from China to India, when it comes to growth. Last year the Chinese Communist Party started a massive crackdown on tech giants, education, and entertainment firms in order to pursue the ideology of “common prosperity”- which seeks to narrow the stubborn wealth gap between the rich and the poor.
These crackdowns by the government have already wiped out $1.5 trillion US dollars in market value last year and have left investors from around the world terrified of losing their multi-million dollar investments.
India on the other hand is slowly replacing China as the preferred destination of investment for these western firms. China plus one strategy - where world is looking for another place for manufacturing is also set to help India massively in coming years.
India is being viewed as next growth engine for the world’s economy and Indian government is also playing a key role in all of this. It’s efforts towards easing regulations, providing good infrastructure, and promoting entrepreneurship across the country through programs like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Gatishkati, and Startup India are starting to show results.

But that's not how Chinese start-ups come up they think about selling it to the world from the beginning itself . And most of the start-ups if not many think about concept testing it and then selling it off to the higest bidder from abroad that's not how you look at your startups, start up is supposed to be your baby no one thinks about having a baby just to sell it .

Turning a profit is not a must have requirement for a country's growth. When foreign VCs invest say $300million into one company, that money is transformed into hiring more employees and paying their salaries (which is taxed), paying contractors, suppliers, distributors, bigger office buildings etc. Even if the startup fails, the entrepreneur gains some knowledge and experience to start a new venture and usually most entrepreneurs succeed in their 2nd or 3rd attempt. So yeah, being profitable will help us grow a long way but it's not a requirement for country's growth because startups still account for only a small portion of the country's GDP.

      Govt. policy often dictates the success of a startup ecosystem ag1. With support in the form of grants, accelerators, incubators, etc. a startup ecosystem can thrive. The opposite is also true: restrictions and bans can stunt an ecosystem's growth. We have seen GOI implement such an approach in the crypto space, and more oversight is needed in other domains like EVs and edtech. China has gone above and beyond though, with crackdowns/bans in crypto, edtech, social media, and also poor treatment of top startup founders/business leaders.     Nice explanation but I think ground realities are totally different, some reasons to disagree are;
    1. Infrastructure in India is around 30-40 years behind than China in all aspect, which is playing pivotal role goods transportation, so it will take decades for India to catch up. Just imagine that China used more cement just in 2013-14 than it was used entire century in US.
    2. The technical labour force is not easily available so it will take at least 10-15 years to reach the basic requirements, and also women participation is very low as compared to China.
    3. China has a very stable govt with no opposition, so, policies are consistent and long term while there are so many political parties in India and ruling different provinces so very difficult on mutual consensuses.
    4. There are so many Economic zones in China which were started to developed around 40 years back, and now there are many economic zones, so different cities are famous for different products and more economic zones are being develop, which is not seen in India.
    5. BRI is linked with more than 150 countries, which means billions of projects are underway and some are already giving benefits to the economy, but best yet to come.
    6. Chinese companies are busy all over the world in infrastructure development, 5G, Telecom sector, Railways, dams, motorways, electronics. All top and most expensive infrastructures are being developed by Chinese companies, India is not 70 yrs behind.
    7. 80% of world electronics are made in China, so it will take years to replace, and by that time Chinese mobile companies will be everywhere and apple is expected to go down. 80% of Iphones are made in China, some of it can be shifted to other, but not all.
    8. China is leading 5G, AI, Drones, solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, electronics, space technology, high speed rail, nanotechnology, agriculture, batteries, etc, while India is far behind.
    9. For the first time in history there more Chinese universities than US universities in world top 2000 universities, and this number increased dramatically in last 5 years, while India is so behind.
    10. China is mostly self-sufficient while India is depending on outer world for many things.
These are some examples and overall, still many fields where India is very behind, and there is no field except population where India can cross China in coming years.

So we sat down as a team and evaluated the last 2 years, realising that news videos weren't going to help us get to where we want to go as a channel. We may revitalise the news format in the future in a different form (maybe more conversational content, similar to a podcast but tightly cut, less monologue/news anchor the way we've done it so far), but for now we're hitting pause and changing direction back to the content we were making pre-pandemic, i.e. podcast interviews. -Caleb

Unicorn is just a fad and not an end goal or a key to something. The value(not money related) and impact of Chinese semiconductor start up ecosystem for example easily beat the current and upcoming Unicorns + start ups in india.

@Pagleth Saxena m8 you think I don't know what's going on in india? Stop fooling people around thinking any stranger you met in the YT knows nothing about india. There's no such thing as semiconductor fabs from Taiwan worth usd 100 billion in india. Foxconn-vedanta proposed fab doesn't even worth that much and not even start construction yet.

    • @user-lx7kx1dd3q
      @user-lx7kx1dd3q ปีที่แล้ว +6

@Pagleth Saxena I said it again please don't assume that a stranger you talked too is an ignorant on the subject.
First of all tata isn't Taiwan company. Earlier on you were pressing on Taiwan semi fab investment in india in which only Foxconn who took the initiative. To build a fab for production of mature nodes at least an investment to a tune of USD 15 billion to US 20 billion is needed. And in the jv between Foxconn-vedanta to build a fab Foxconn will invest about $500 million.
Secondly, your government target is to manufacture mature nodes chips bcus there's a huge market for such chips in india and globally.
Thirdly, tata never being clear about their semiconductor roadmap. Especially beyond their initial target that's establishing OSAT business in india. Anything we heard in india beyond Foxconn-vedanta JV, IGSS Ventures, and ISMC in fab and tata in OSAT is mired in vagueness.
Fourthly, india never had a plan to produce advance chips for smartphone and PC bcus they know it's an area that very tough to get into.
Fifthly, let's we go back to my initial comment. My initial comment talked about Semiconductor startups ecosystem in China. I'm not talking about a big ticket venture like setting up Semiconductor fab. So I don't know why you bring fab investment in here.
Lastly I don't know what you were talking /asking me about in hindi language there. Can you write in English please. If you wanted to write in hindi please used hindi language writing. Don't used ABC.

@Pagleth Saxena semiconductor startups seek and get their funding from an investors. Serie A funding, serie B funding and so on. Those funds are then used by semiconductor startups for R&D activity, business expansion etc. Usually big ticket investment startups like Semi Fab newcomer need a huge government support to keep their business going forward but to see a startup in semiconductor foundry space is very, very rare today. Same with semiconductor manufacturing equipments space. China is witnessing the establishment of semiconductor manufacturing equipment businesses under the heavy support of Chinese government. There are some private semiconductor equipment startups exist in China that mostly focus on utility equipments. But the lion shares of semiconductor related funding goes to FABLESS SEMICONDUCTOR startups. Which only designing a chips. China has world's second largest chip design industry after US. Thanks to a thriving fabless semiconductor ecosystem in China lead by thousands of startups.

As a Chinese, I am very funny every time I see this kind of video. The development of a country is not determined by the top few billionaires, but by the changes of everyone in the country, especially the middle and lower levels. The reason why India has not developed well is that, to put it mildly, it lacks Mao Zedong, the Cultural Revolution and the agrarian reform! The Western Propaganda Cultural Revolution is a heinous crime. Yes, there are many bad things, but there are also many good things. After all, China and India have a long history, and there are many bad things accumulated. It is particularly important to reshape the national values. For example, the place where men and women are the most equal in China is the place where the Cultural Revolution was the most thorough.

Agree. There are many regions in India and they use different mother tongues. English is treated as the common language among them. Therefore, I think that people in India are trying to develop their tribe rather than develop their country. It's hard for them to be aware of the nationalism so they do not see India as their nest and many Indians migrated to developed countries like US, UK,.. without thinking.

Interesting, but I think there are some misunderstanding about China in this video, especially the crackdowns and other means of control which are shown as some kind of 'evil CCP thing imposed on the people', while actually most if not all of these measures are actually welcomed by Chinese consumers... And that's the most important for an economy. Example: the crackdown on rogue influencers was a demand to protect consumers who could get fooled by crooks. France is (trying painfully to) introduce the same kind of measure due to rogue French influencers selling crap from their Dubai base... So keep aside political and moral judgements when assessing economies, what counts is the consumer growth.
