Oh wow. Just hearing the opening theme tune made me tear up! Could picture myself as a youngster curled up on the sofa next to my mum and dad watching our fav programme. Sniff sniff. A lifetime ago and so innocent to the madness we now live in.
This has always been a comfort series for me too. It’s a good reminder to simplify life , and be grateful. Even if you don’t want to simplify as much as they have, it feels good to imagine that you could succeed even in the most basic circumstances. 😀
I'm only in my mid 30's and I feel quite lucky that, between my elder brothers, of various ages, and my parents, I saw comedies from as old as the 50s to the late 90s and 2000s (when I was growing up). Some of the 70s ones were just brilliant. I loved The Good Life. And Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em and Last Of The Summer Wine were great too. Though it's hard to think of Last Of The Summer Wine as a 70s series when it went on for so many decades!
Penelope Keith was awarded Dame of the British Empire in 2014, and very rightly so. Although her characters were aloof and middle-upper class, her acting always appealed to me, as a working class....Her Majesty and her decision to make Penelope a DBE was superb ❤
Wonderful comedy from the 70s ...and the writing and acting was done with a lovely warmth and honesty,..the 1970s had some really great comedies, ....sadly modern telly is so boring by comparison.....this decade was a golden era in sitcoms
Aye + Terry & June or Only Fools & Horses, but they're obv' 1980's+. Best ended with 'One Foot In The Grave' however as you say the 70's ftw. This has such a homely feeling + great music.
Couldn't agree more, I have DVD boxed sets of this and many other situation comedies from the 70s 80s and 90s, and I never watch live television nowadays. Its drivel
Our favorite tv show called Good Neighbors here in the States. We watched religiously and I’m reminded of the last episode. She had to work and I’d been crestfallen, swearing I wouldn’t watch it without her, even though she said it was fine, I felt it was betraying her. I did and was in tears but couldn’t stop watching. One of the worst things I regret 40 some odd years later. One of the best, most heartwarming series ever. Enjoy. Ta
I watched this when it was broadcast here in Australia in the 1970s and it had a profound effect on my way of viewing life. In my 20s my partner and I grew most of our own vegetables and herbs and we kept ducks and chickens (only for the eggs). Kids, work, terrible climate etc slowed us down but we still grow a lot of vegetables. We used to brew our own beer and cider but the latter was HORRIBLE. You’d get through one and start a second bottle and feel deathly. We hope to emigrate to the UK in a couple of years time and will start up the self sufficiency again.
I just discovered this show on audio through my local library. I'm on my second run through of the entire series. I guessed that someone had posted at least some of it on TH-cam and I wasn't wrong! Love seeing these shows I had only heard before. Penelope Keith narrates some of the visual elements so it's easy to follow along. She sounds different enough that you never confuse her with Margot. What a wonderful treat this show is. So glad I found it!
I have this on audio, too. Great to listen to while I'm puttering around the kitchen or laundry room. I love Penelope Keith's narration, so much so that I purchased all the "Agatha Raisin" cozy murder mysteries by M.C. Beaton which Keith narrates so well.
The good life was inspired to make life better for everyone feel better a truly inspiring sitcom to make people pull up their socks and realise life has its ups and downs
Same here , was my absolute favourite 🙂😉, my bro in -law use to call the wife and i and say - hi there peasants? We both loved the goods and we wanted to be just like them . The days when tv was great and fun. 🙂👍
just recently heard of this in a documentary on Pen Keith couple of days ago - the vibe of this is so good and comforting - wow never heard of it before this.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
The Good life, although funny, with a married couple make the most of self sufficiently. I wish so many more of us could try it. Forget about the shopping center's. Get your hands muddy, and be proud of what you've achieved. As long as you have each other, you can't go wrong.
@Madeleine Grayson they were a bit self righteous and definitely used Margo and Jerry for some of the things they couldn't afford like good booze but I still enjoy watching the shows.
I do love finding shows like this on TH-cam. Of course the only downside is that you inevitably find at the sour commenter posting stuff like: "Telly these days is rubbish,", "Back when TV was good,", "couldn't make this nowadays,", "The PC brigade/woke have ruined everything....etc...etc". The irony is that such views completely ignore the fact that TV throughout the decades is liberally peppered with comedy to suit all tastes...even today. And comedies like this were often dismissed, during their day, as being 'mundane' or 'middle of the road'.
They really don't make them like they used to,do they??..Honestly it's better than all the crap they put on now instead of all these reality programmes & 💩💩..I love the older stand up comedy & the roasts, people knew how to take a joke, the world's gone pc mad😅😅it really has.. Let's all just get on,when we don't agree let's meet in the middle, let's agree to disagree & let's just get on in life, money comes & goes, but our loved ones don't..sorry to ramble on,but let's just enjoy life, life can be hard enough without people making harder,so let's just be there for one another no matter what.. Sending love & hugs,to anyone needing that bit of reassurance then know you are only human, don't put so much pressure on yourself,be kind to your self & give yourself love & time to heal, just take each day as it comes..please take care & stay safe 🙏🏻💜✌🏼☮🌠🤘🏻🌱🌹🐝🐞🙏🏻💜✌🏼☮🌠🤘🏻🌱🌹🐝🌹..
Hiya, can anyone tell me which is the episode where Barbera knitted that Mad, weird sized green jumper for Tom? I have searched and searched but can't find it. I want to send it to my cousin who has moved from the city to the countryside and has embraced it xx
It's called, "Suit Yourself" Series 4 episode 5. She weaves a suit for Tom in that one. In "Silly, But It's Fun", the Christmas special, she weaves oversized jumpers for Jerry and Margo. Also series 4 (I believe)
The 'perfect couple'.. Just as Jerry & Margot are + the same for Fawlty Towers. Sometimes gutted they didn't do more episodes, but then again that might spoil it a bit as these/the 4 series of this never tire.
Yeah, that's what happens when 4:3 gets 'cinematized', eh? Too many key elements in the frame and/or so many camera pans/movement to maintain everything in-frame, or in some cases, no excuse other than just really bad cropping. I understand the desire to reframe in 16:9, but some material is best left in its original aspect.

with really bad TV reception.
The Good Life was a excellent brilliant program

When I'm feeling low, or anxious (as most of us are during this pandemic) I watch this series. It's like comfort food for the brain.
agreed
that is exactly right a drop of re assurance in and stormy sea i d say
i so get that its my go to spot
Some people have opted for self sufficiency in real life! Look up Tinkers Bubble eco village on here TH-cam for example!
Can't fault that/Saw Felicity Kendal on Graham Norton (feeling down in the dumps) & was reminded of this, had a Google & plenty to enjoy..👍

OMG. I watch this show in Canada when it ran. It was awesome. Love Felicity in Rosemary and Thyme.

Still, no one gives due credit to the Jerry, who works endlessly in the rejected awful job and financially supports both households.
That was a microcosm of the 1970s in the UK
What a gem, they just don’t make tv like this anymore
Found this again in autumn, 2024! Thank you!

Fantastic comedy
Margo has helped them in emergencies over and again. They should have let her be in the photo shoot.
I mean after all its just a photo

Hi
What a dreadful upload. Incorrect picture ratio, half the frame missing. Still some people are easily pleased and will watch anything. As proved here.
I think Vyvyan from The Young Ones said it best...
How can we get TH-cam to cope with the 4:3 ratio
