Keep the "Sad little king on a sad little hill" speech in mind - its the first spark of River's abilities... Its my favorite moment for river in the series... She gets to put this little bully in place - but can get away with it because she's a girl. So Badger has to pretend to be charmed - but if anyone else had said that to him, he would probably have gotten violent with him.
It's not just because she's a girl, but because she put on the character of someone from his own home colony. She didn't just put him in his place, she did it in a way that his own upbringing kept him from opposing.
Things that will never be explained, Mal knew the dance. Not his people, as far as we know, never really even knew any one in those circles. Yet knew the dance step for step.
They talk about that in the episode commentary. The real world reasoning is that they needed the conversation to flow smoothly, but I think their narrative explanation was that he'd probably been to some function either as a soldier or as the son of a rancher, where he'd had to dance. They added the "I think I know this one" line and had him mess up the final steps to make it a little more believable.

Women are in charge of the guilds and their clients, denying anyone who would abuse the women and the entire thing being protected and consensual. I’d hope we could get there one day.

Inara has the trained compartmentalization of sex and feelings of a Companion. Neither places much stock in sexual attractiveness alone. That's a long road to hoe. As originally written, Mal was colder, angrier and more callous, with far less humor. Fillion told Whedon he just couldn't play it that way.

Certainly he's not a lady's man at all, nor a libertine like Jayne. Frankly, in the pioneer situation of the Outer Planets, very few unattached women would be available who were not prostitutes. Mal was allergic to the Inner Planets, and Serenity spent too much time on the dodge and in transit to develop romantic relationships. This affected Kaylee too("Going on a year now...") Regarding Patience: I was thinking romantic or sexual relationships.
The spy in the first episode shot Kaylee. He was shot and left for the reavers. Fanny Miller hurt Kaylee's feelings and she was made to look a fool in front of her "friends". Mal hurt Kaylee's feelings and he had to buy her the dress. And he got stabbed. Pay attention to what happens to people who hurt Kaylee or upset her. There's a definite pattern here.

Also, this was filmed on either a Disney backlot or a Disney park, my recollection gets fuzzy. There's also a story about Jane Espenson, the writer of this episode having to navigate a bathroom filled with women in hoop skirts. ^_^

Just to clarify, the sword fight itself was (fairly) well done - but not the entire process. Some guy who's friends with one of the principles simply dictates time and place and weapons to be used? The idea of naming your "second" is so the two seconds (who in theory are not mad at one another) can meet as rational representatives of their principles to work out the details. To the best of my knowledge, the second isn't supposed to fight if the first guy refuses - though they would often be present with weapons of their own to intervene if someone broke the rules. I just chalked it up to "maybe the rules change over the next 500 years", but in reality I think it's a lack of attention to detail (odd when you consider the chorography that went into the swordplay) or simply ignoring the rules for the sake of expediency.

Since Mal was the challenger, Atherton did get the choice of weapons - but this still wasn't handled in the old school fashion with the Seconds dealing with one another. So as you indicated, the timing and location was perhaps the local way of doing things, or the Code had changed over the previous seven hundred years. In reality, I presumed they didn't want to devote a lot of the script to those details.
In most cases the seconds were there as witnesses to their primary appearing in the duel, and that the duel was conducted with propriety. So to disavow any claims of cowardice. Or to bear witness of their primary to being met by a mob with clubs. And if a fatality did occur, to return the body to the family. It also depends on the actual duelling customs (often formalised as codes) that was followed. For example in the German/Prussian code of the 1805 [?] the seconds stood perpendicular to the primaries with swords in front of the primaries in an attempt to prevent a lethal lunge. It was supposed to be a duel to the death. Anything less was humiliation. "You didn't have to wound him" meant that he should have killed hem or gone through with the humiliation by leaving him unharmed. Wounding him was just jacking with him...cruelty for the sake of cruelty. But Mal had never claimed to be a nice guy.

Remember that ostensibly the primary purpose of the duel was to test the bravery of the duellists and theoretically not to be an opportunity for murder (which is emphasised by academic fencing where the ability to take a blow is measured and thus a duelling scar is treasured). When you fought in formation you needed to rely on the bravery of the men beside you, which is why it was such a martially-oriented thing and claims of cowardice could be damning.
Although the reason why rapier and fencer in modern sport fencing have target stone is before code duello was widely accepted and thus the duel continued until an opponent surrendered or was rendered incapable (or the attending physician called a halt). On the other hand the epee was developed after code duello so represented a fight to first blood, hence a touch may be scored anywhere. Though most duellists considered this effete. [The right of way represents the ability of the fencer to survive the attack in rapier or sabre; you have to show that you have dealt with the enemy attack before scoring a valid hit.]
Appropriate to this episode, I particularly enjoy Article 17 of the Southern US Duelling Codes (1847): "For a direct insult to a lady, no apology can be received. But as this code is intended for the use by gentlemen, and as no individual of this caste is capable of insulting a lady, those despicable hounds so transgressing are hereby surrendered to the ear-slitting clemency of the lady's friends."

It was supposed to be a duel to the death. Anything less was humiliation. "You didn't have to wound him" meant that he should have killed hem or gone through with the humiliation by leaving him unharmed. Wounding him was just jacking with him...cruelty for the sake of cruelty. But Mal had never claimed to be a nice guy.

1) He would have had to kill him *BY WOUNDING HIM.* So, he totally had to wound that man. 🤣
2) His concern is all over the place.
First, he says he *MUST* kill him. Then, he adapts super easily to Mal not killing him and apparently it wasn't so mandatory, then he does a total 180° turn and expresses concern about the stabbing in the stabbing match, something he was vocally requesting until a moment ago.
3) What does he care? He clearly doesn't like the guy. Why is it suddenly "too much"? Why is he suddenly concerned about Atherton? I dunno, he looked super silly. 😅
