    You're ALWAYS encouraging people to try different ingredients and not just follow the recipe word-for-word. That's why I love this channel!

    As 2019 draws to a close I just wanna say how much this channel has been a staple of my weekly viewing throughout the year. It's a very feel-good watch, I love the various experiments with sodas and fried chicken but also the cosy, delicious meals and the Sunday old time cookbook series. A lot of the recipes are beyond my skill level but I can usually take some inspiration into my own home-cooking.

    Just recently, my brother and I were talking about foods we liked when we were kids, one of which was pork and beans. Haven't eaten the stuff in decades, and am not tempted to buy the canned stuff. So, here comes Glen with a timely solution! Thanks!

    What adjustment would one make if they had to do this only on a stove without an oven.

    One of my quick guilty pleasures is cutting up hot dogs and throwing them in canned, baked beans. We used to bring them with us for when we didn't catch any fish. If I cooked your recipe, nobody would eat my slop anymore I'm afraid. You really brought baked beans up to a new level.

    My Mother would make beans and weiners here in canada while we grew up almost every week. Sometimes the weiner's had added onions and even chopped up bacon cooked with them in a pan before the beans were added and simmered to perfection. But we all knew it was beans and weiners nite because we all had a spoon ready to try and get that singular piece of pork floating on top of the can's of either Libby's or Heinz pork n' bean's after she cut the lid off... race for the floating pork piece.... It was just a taste of what dinner would be once it was cooked and I won that battle for that piece of pork a few times and I still remember how it tasted. Eating a nice hot bowl of beans and weiners with a chunk of warm bannock soaked with butter while you watched disney on a sunday thank's to the cbc, or even wayne and shuster was like my every youthful weekend...
    My Family tonight is eating beans and weiners with sauted bacon and onions... and It always brings me back to when I was a child.

    How much of the mustard can be tasted in the final dish?
    Most of the flavors in the mustard come from essential oils, and they should evaporate after some time at temperatures above 50°C. I made the experience, that the "mustardy" flavour is much stronger and distinctive in a dish, when I add the mustard shortly before serving. I also already played around and added one part of the mustard in the beginning, so the flavors that don't evaporate really combine with the rest of the dish, and in the end I add some more to get this additional "kick" of the essential oils of the mustard.

    BRAISED PORK BELLY AND BEANS! I like the mix of beans, as well. That way each mouthful has something a little different to offer. I can never cook dried beans at home as well as the good commercial brands can do! Canned beans are tender all the way through and each bean is evenly cooked.

    My mother was diabetic she would basically do this. A little of every condiment in the fridge except ketchup and mayo. It wasn't exactly good for her but we liked it and it was better than canned stuff.

    Looks at bean box in garage, "Hmm, Red Beans, Pinto Beans, Black Beans, Chickpeas, Cannellini Beans, and Lima beans."
    Yep, bunch a different beans here too- all canned cause I hate having to remember to pre soak or cook dry beans.

    • @RSidneyB
      @RSidneyB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can pre-soak beans in an hour by bringing the water to a boil, then turning off the heat, adding the beans, cover and let them sit an hour. Drain, rinse, recover with water and cook per usual for the type of bean you’re using.
      The best thing about cooking your own beans is cooking things with the soaked beans. It really, really deepens the flavor. I now find canned beans bland. Still good in a pinch, but so much better to cook them from scratch.
      We always add a bay leaf or two. Whole garlic cloves, onion, twigs of herbs, whatever.
      Bean appetit!
