I live in the wild, wild east, of the NETHERLANDS, Zwolle city, the city, it is starting to age well, though it is only around 800 years old as a city, so not really very old, but the centre is nice, and close to the river IJssel and the forests across the river, so no slums like in Amsterdam :)
Only because of video's like yours, we realize the Netherlands isn't so bad. Dutch people love to complain about everything, but in comparison: this isn't bad at all.

There are so many of these (Americans in NL) channels but you really mention the same feelings I have. I love the weathere here, the bike paths, water everywhere, clean streets, regular rain. In Maryland, I despised the long drought laden, hot summers, making so much money but barely making ends meet! I'm grateful everyday I wake up here in Amsterdam.

Another American living here once said the same. She loved paying taxes for exactly the same reason. The money generally goes visibly to things like the maintenance of the roads. I don’t mind paying taxes, but I can’t say that I love it either. My favorite season is autumn. After that comes spring in which you can see nature coming to life again. I don’t mind winter with the holidays but I am one of the few people who don’t like summer at all. I hate the heat, the noise of the traffic coming through the open window and especially the mosquitoes.
Americans in the U.S. often have little clue what's going on in the rest of the world. But Dutch people also have no clue how it really is, living in the U.S. Because A) they never been in the U.S. B) they only visited as a tourist going to all the nice places, not having a care in the world C) They worked in a well paying high-end job in the U.S. (there ain't no forklift drivers expats😉) D) Dutch mom and dad are rich enough so they can go a year to university in the U.S. as a nice life-experience, plus it's nice to have on your resume.
Not to forget, for most for sure what they believe they know about the US mostly comes from what Hollywood shows us. So everyone there has a huge house, all of their 3 kids mostly drive a brand new big SUV already. Never ever has there been any talk about the fact you have to pay for an ambulance in shows like "Greys anatomy" and so on .. I mean, personally these days i get more and more annoyed about that all, especially when i see movies that have a story that woild never ever happen here because its about people turning criminal because they couldn't pay the medical bills for maybe their mother beeing ill, or stuff like that. But even though there are a lot of these movies, there never is any critique in them on the medical industry, its just "normal".
That's why I love the internet. We get to see slices of real life. People usually only share the best or worst, but them being out and about and speaking about the things they call good or bad with examples gives you the opportunity to see what living would be compared to your everyday experiences. We know what the street in front of our house looks like, we know about our supermarkets, we know what we expect from our jobs and what we get paid to do it and how it relates to our overall quality of life, we know our preferences. We get a very narrow window into a foreign world, with a mind shaped by that world giving their point of view. I love it, it's one of the best things the internet brought us: a chance to gain perspective.
Isn't it interesting how the most visible result of taxes always seems to be something related to mobility? The Netherlands, France, the USA, ... Like, it's never "how many subsidies did the cultural center in town got?", it's always roads, bicycle infrastructure, bus networks.
For me.. when I say you don’t see where the money is going in the states.. I mean like things like childcare, health care, clean water, fresh fruits etc.
I think it's because it's something we interact with a lot and everyone is forced to do so to some extend. The cultural centre in town isn't something we do a lot with on a day to day basis. People with children, in my experience, always mention things to do with them as that's relevant in their lives, but it's something I have no experience with outside my own childhood. People with disabilities will mention a ton of stuff that are relevant in their day to day that most people probably never even think about. There's only a very select group of people who can and do not interact with infrastructure, so it's a point of reference we all can use.

I don’t love paying taxes, but I don’t mind it. I am aware of what I get in return and how easy doing your taxes are in the Netherlands, compared to e.g. the US or Germany. I love the seasons, don’t like any temperatures above 25 C, but this summer was just perfect. I think I am very fortunate for being born in the Netherlands. Working with refugees (as I do) and travelling a lot, really gives you perspective and it makes me really grateful for a lot of things.
The best thing about these videos is still seeing how people live in a big city. For me as a country dweller it is almost unimaginable to have to be here every day, between all that concrete and traffic jams.

@@Lillith. Ah, me too! Ohw, thats a nice bike! I recommend in the spring, just make sure you got whipes with you for the bugs. I do not really ha a route, i use a app that plans a route. I dont know where you live but there are some nice roads outside the Randstad, also the coastline is nice in the summer.
UPS : Scheveningen beach Oct. 25 = 17 degrees feet in the sand. + Dutch people seems to have more time and benefits, hence always traveling :) DOWNS : Gas price at Euro 1.91/L while 0.96/L in Canada (1.45 CAD). + Amsterdam is super impressive, until you experience the crazy crowds ! Anyways, we just came back home in Canada from a two week vacantie in Den Haag and can't wait to return again !!! Big highlights : Haarlem, Dordrecht and Delft. Tot straks !
Somehow we complain simply because we actually like to find anything to complain about. You say it is sunny, we say we can't see the traffic lights because the sun is too bright. But at the same time, do we actually complain because there is too little to complain about???

Complaining is our national pastime. We know we have it good, but the way you keep things good is complaining when it's not as good as it could be. Always strive for the best you possibly can be, for compliance is the death of progression.

I do not hate paying taxes. Because i know we comolain a lot in the Netherlands but if you compare it to other countrys in europe we are oretty good organised. Everything is well maintained.
My favorite season,… ok spring is beautiful, summer beautiful , autumn again beautiful, ‘winter’ it has it beautiful moments …. So the answer is ….damn can’t makeup my mind. The only down point to winter, is for me the ‘short’ day(light). And again about the season the Dutch weather is more like a 7/8 of a year autumn/spring and 1/8 summer 😂 ok made up my mind going for the short summer.

I'm glad with the promotion of my country, because we also get a lot of refugees so to compensate we also need a lot of working people, so if we only going to get refugees and no working people then the burden on the economy becomes big, but if we also attract working people like yourself it balances it out and we can take on more refugees. just to clarify, i have nothing against refugees, they deserve a place to be safe! Just saying that in the netherlands once you do get that citizenship and you been through too much trauma from war(most refugees), or can't work, you get looked after, so that's a good thing, not a bad thing, I'm glad my country takes care of people like that. But to be able to keep on doing that we need people who work so promotion is good.

Hey Sky. A few remarks; plenty of ppl. here that live on the edge of poverty, specially living on minimum benefits. Did volunteers work and helped out that group in particular. So there is a lot of grey area I guess. Second about food quality; go to a supermarket in Belgium or France. They are what is called Bourgondisch and have a more refined taste. Dutch are thrifty and buy what is cheap and less on taste. Take bread, sure heaps better here then in the Murica however compared to Germany or France it is simply sub par.
Dutch don’t hate paying taxes because we know it’s worth with our fine social security system and clean, well maintained cities and towns among a lot of other things that make us feel happy. We like to complain about it though 😂

I am sure that living here is so much better than in the US, certainly in this political period overthere. It is unbelievable so much hate is spread. Taxes, meh. I think we just don't have anything to compare it with. We think it isn't spent good enough. Good to have an outside perspective. Man, there is nothing I love more as the changing weather when you move from one season to the next. You can feel it, smell it, taste it. Though I wouldn't mind a 6-month summer, I love all the seasons (especially when they arrive) About complaining, we do be having that as a national pastime. And the internet is very susceptible to that anyway. Don't let it get you down. Keep enjoying yourself! (and take all the complaining with an ocean of salt) :D
i as dutch love 2 seasons, Fall and spring, The ending and the beginning of the year :) and the reason we often complain about how the healthcare etc functions is because it was 100 times better in the older days... paywise aswel. Till capitalism started here.
We definitely do complain a lot but maybe that's the reason why we have it so good over here. We complain and then we make things better. And then when we're done with that we complain about the same things again. It's just a theory.

As a Dutch person i prefer the cold.. screw summer man i experienced in my apartment mild symptoms of heat exhaustion it was *HELL* plus i grew up with colder weather so my heat resistance is not that great.. does not help i got a fair bit of body fat (yes i know i can do something about that and i am) but still i mainly prefer the cold because you can actually do something about the cold but when its hot.. and i mean HOT like 32C or 89.6F i cannot do anything to cool down and i do not exactly have the funds to just go and buy a air conditioner that does not turn your home into a fungus living ground due to the moisture the thing gives off so the good stuff is pretty much out of my reach
Most Dutch never lived for a long time anywhere worldwide. If you do, the Netherlands is heaven on earth. The safety, healthcare, nice people, no mob, seasons, no pollution, no corrupt cops, roads, houses, best infrastructure, whatever is safe. And there best thing, judges are paid by the people, not by corporations or political parties. I love it here. And the weather is fantastic. Cool nights, reasonable weather temperature, rain. The family from Egypt visiting stood outside soaking in the rain. They couldn't get enough.
I love going on holiday, but coming home is often my favourite part. There are a ton of places I love to return to every now and then because they're lovely, but I don't want to live there permanently.
Ulra-Dutch complaining take: "I don't give a rat's behind if anywhere else in the world is even worse than over here!" 😁 The US may be worse. Don't think it's of much use to set some kind of base level above which life is (relatively) good. The only thing that matters imo, is our own standards. Compared to say 2 or 3 decades ago NLs haven't exactly improved, to put it mildly.
One thing you'll need to know about the Dutch is that they dont give you "heat" persay it's more that they are brutally honest with everything, they just straight up tell you to your face and don't give a Fuuuck. Wich for some people might sound rude or angry, but on the other hand you'll get that honesty and know that they mean it no "American fakeness" here.

I see that you love it here, I have been to family in Mexico in Durango, staying there for months and I am getting bored by the sun every day, it’s so refreshing when it rains. Cleaning house there , it’s always black around the windowsill and repairing a road there, its not done very often, the roads are dirty and there are potholes and no sidewalk sometimes. And luckily there are buses but I only go there in the winter months, it is much too warm for me after February. Can I give you a suggestion. I can make a lovely gift for Xmas for your wife. You can send me a private message if you are interested. My new hobby is sewing and I make practical things like purses, tote bags, cardholders, placemats and more. Think about it.

I love paying taxes too. I'd be happy if I had to pay a million every year. Or ten. Because the more you make...etc. Same with the weather. It's mostly modest compared to the US. I don't complain, but I like discussing it. About fog. In my younger days I was a sailor. Went to NY twice - both times in the summer - and way outside the North American coast of Halifax, the foghorn started roaring. For days on end. So that in NY harbour when the damn thing was shut off, I couldn't sleep.

I don’t mind paying taxes, but what frustrates me is the number of errors that sometimes happen at the Belastingdienst. These mistakes are so damaging to people, and it takes a lot of effort to get them corrected. They will just act, as we would say in Dutch like "Hun neus bloed" Also, I feel that the portion they take from our salaries is simply too high.
We don't mind paying taxes but what we don't like is the fact that they have such high taxes on certain things that people can't afford to pay for it like with heating, and now with the plans of raising taxes on books, newspapers, sports.
What Dutch people don't realize is that the poor people in The Netherlands, even though some of them may struggle with paying for heating, are still way better of then 40 million Americans, living below the poverty line. A poverty line that is a lot lower then what is considered "poor" in the Netherlands. Americans living on food-stamps, barely able to afford to rent a house with broken heating, leaks in the roof, molded rooms, cockroach infested, drafty house. And still being lucky, because they are not homeless. Also without any health-insurance. In the USA young couples with little kids living in a tent because they had bad luck and became homeless, is not unheard of. Such things are unthinkable in the Netherlands. Being poor in The Netherlands is a breeze compared to being poor in the U.S.
I was just responding to his comment that we don't like paying taxes. This is not true, we sometimes don't agree with how the government makes the choices where to put the tax on. We have the highest prices for heating in the world and this is because there is a lot of tax on it. Also putting a high tax on sports is not smart because it's will be more expensive later is people get unhealthy etc.
A lot of Dutch people hate things here because they have never been outside of the West. They genuinely think we are a horrible dictatorship without freedom or good things. As a Dutchie who lived in Egypt and Syria for studies (in the 80s and 90s) I am very happy in the Netherlands.

I'd love to pay a million in income tax a year. Unfortunately I can't. Weather: most of it is ok, or better. Wind and rain: not so much. Of which the winter half-year gives a lot.

I don’t love paying taxes, but I don’t mind it. I am aware of what I get in return and how easy doing your taxes are in the Netherlands, compared to e.g. the US or Germany.
I love the seasons, don’t like any temperatures above 25 C, but this summer was just perfect.
I think I am very fortunate for being born in the Netherlands.
Working with refugees (as I do) and travelling a lot, really gives you perspective and it makes me really grateful for a lot of things.

I dont know where you live but there are some nice roads outside the Randstad, also the coastline is nice in the summer.

UPS : Scheveningen beach Oct. 25 = 17 degrees feet in the sand. + Dutch people seems to have more time and benefits, hence always traveling :)

Complaining is our national pastime. We know we have it good, but the way you keep things good is complaining when it's not as good as it could be. Always strive for the best you possibly can be, for compliance is the death of progression.
That is on you if you are not saving for a rainy. Can’t blame anyone for not being able to make it. Now if you have a tragic situation that is different. Winter is my favorite season.
I do not hate paying taxes. Because i know we comolain a lot in the Netherlands but if you compare it to other countrys in europe we are oretty good organised. Everything is well maintained.

My favorite season,… ok spring is beautiful, summer beautiful , autumn again beautiful, ‘winter’ it has it beautiful moments …. So the answer is ….damn can’t makeup my mind. The only down point to winter, is for me the ‘short’ day(light). And again about the season the Dutch weather is more like a 7/8 of a year autumn/spring and 1/8 summer 😂 ok made up my mind going for the short summer.

Lately a lot of people get mad when they notice you're happy.
I'm glad with the promotion of my country, because we also get a lot of refugees so to compensate we also need a lot of working people, so if we only going to get refugees and no working people then the burden on the economy becomes big, but if we also attract working people like yourself it balances it out and we can take on more refugees.
just to clarify, i have nothing against refugees, they deserve a place to be safe! Just saying that in the netherlands once you do get that citizenship and you been through too much trauma from war(most refugees), or can't work, you get looked after, so that's a good thing, not a bad thing, I'm glad my country takes care of people like that. But to be able to keep on doing that we need people who work so promotion is good.

Hey Sky. A few remarks; plenty of ppl. here that live on the edge of poverty, specially living on minimum benefits. Did volunteers work and helped out that group in particular. So there is a lot of grey area I guess.
Second about food quality; go to a supermarket in Belgium or France. They are what is called Bourgondisch and have a more refined taste. Dutch are thrifty and buy what is cheap and less on taste. Take bread, sure heaps better here then in the Murica however compared to Germany or France it is simply sub par.
Dutch don’t hate paying taxes because we know it’s worth with our fine social security system and clean, well maintained cities and towns among a lot of other things that make us feel happy. We like to complain about it though 😂

I am sure that living here is so much better than in the US, certainly in this political period overthere. It is unbelievable so much hate is spread. Man, there is nothing I love more as the changing weather when you move from one season to the next. You can feel it, smell it, taste it. Though I wouldn't mind a 6-month summer, I love all the seasons (especially when they arrive)
About complaining, we do be having that as a national pastime. And the internet is very susceptible to that anyway. Don't let it get you down. Keep enjoying yourself! (and take all the complaining with an ocean of salt) :D

i as dutch love 2 seasons, Fall and spring, The ending and the beginning of the year :) and the reason we often complain about how the healthcare etc functions is because it was 100 times better in the older days... paywise aswel. Till capitalism started here.
We definitely do complain a lot but maybe that's the reason why we have it so good over here. We complain and then we make things better. And then when we're done with that we complain about the same things again. It's just a theory.

As a Dutch person i prefer the cold.. screw summer man i experienced in my apartment mild symptoms of heat exhaustion it was *HELL* plus i grew up with colder weather so my heat resistance is not that great.. does not help i got a fair bit of body fat (yes i know i can do something about that and i am) but still i mainly prefer the cold because you can actually do something about the cold but when its hot.. and i mean HOT like 32C or 89.6F i cannot do anything to cool down and i do not exactly have the funds to just go and buy a air conditioner that does not turn your home into a fungus living ground due to the moisture the thing gives off so the good stuff is pretty much out of my reach

Most Dutch never lived for a long time anywhere worldwide. If you do, the Netherlands is heaven on earth. The safety, healthcare, nice people, no mob, seasons, no pollution, no corrupt cops, roads, houses, best infrastructure, whatever is safe. And there best thing, judges are paid by the people, not by corporations or political parties. I love it here. And the weather is fantastic. Cool nights, reasonable weather temperature, rain. The family from Egypt visiting stood outside soaking in the rain. They couldn't get enough.
I love going on holiday, but coming home is often my favourite part. There are a ton of places I love to return to every now and then because they're lovely, but I don't want to live there permanently.
Ulra-Dutch complaining take: "I don't give a rat's behind if anywhere else in the world is even worse than over here!" 😁 The US may be worse. Don't think it's of much use to set some kind of base level above which life is (relatively) good. The only thing that matters imo, is our own standards. Compared to say 2 or 3 decades ago NLs haven't exactly improved, to put it mildly.
One thing you'll need to know about the Dutch is that they dont give you "heat" persay it's more that they are brutally honest with everything, they just straight up tell you to your face and don't give a Fuuuck. Wich for some people might sound rude or angry, but on the other hand you'll get that honesty and know that they mean it no "American fakeness" here.

I see that you love it here, I have been to family in Mexico in Durango, staying there for months and I am getting bored by the sun every day, it’s so refreshing when it rains. Cleaning house there , it’s always black around the windowsill and repairing a road there, its not done very often, the roads are dirty and there are potholes and no sidewalk sometimes. And luckily there are buses but I only go there in the winter months, it is much too warm for me after February. Can I give you a suggestion. I can make a lovely gift for Xmas for your wife. You can send me a private message if you are interested. My new hobby is sewing and I make practical things like purses, tote bags, cardholders, placemats and more. Think about it.

Same with the weather. It's mostly modest compared to the US. I don't complain, but I like discussing it.
About fog. In my younger days I was a sailor. Went to NY twice - both times in the summer - and way outside the North American coast of Halifax, the foghorn started roaring. For days on end. So that in NY harbour when the damn thing was shut off, I couldn't sleep.

I don’t mind paying taxes, but what frustrates me is the number of errors that sometimes happen at the Belastingdienst. These mistakes are so damaging to people, and it takes a lot of effort to get them corrected. They will just act, as we would say in Dutch like "Hun neus bloed" Also, I feel that the portion they take from our salaries is simply too high.

We don't mind paying taxes but what we don't like is the fact that they have such high taxes on certain things that people can't afford to pay for it like with heating, and now with the plans of raising taxes on books, newspapers, sports.
What Dutch people don't realize is that the poor people in The Netherlands, even though some of them may struggle with paying for heating, are still way better of then 40 million Americans, living below the poverty line. A poverty line that is a lot lower then what is considered "poor" in the Netherlands. Americans living on food-stamps, barely able to afford to rent a house with broken heating, leaks in the roof, molded rooms, cockroach infested, drafty house. And still being lucky, because they are not homeless. Also without any health-insurance. In the USA young couples with little kids living in a tent because they had bad luck and became homeless, is not unheard of. Such things are unthinkable in the Netherlands. Being poor in The Netherlands is a breeze compared to being poor in the U.S.
I was just responding to his comment that we don't like paying taxes. This is not true, we sometimes don't agree with how the government makes the choices where to put the tax on. We have the highest prices for heating in the world and this is because there is a lot of tax on it. Also putting a high tax on sports is not smart because it's will be more expensive later is people get unhealthy etc.
A lot of Dutch people hate things here because they have never been outside of the West.
They genuinely think we are a horrible dictatorship without freedom or good things.
As a Dutchie who lived in Egypt and Syria for studies (in the 80s and 90s) I am very happy in the Netherlands.

I'd love to pay a million in income tax a year. Unfortunately I can't.
Weather: most of it is ok, or better. Wind and rain: not so much. Of which the winter half-year gives a lot.
I always wish I paid more in taxes since it means my income is higher as well 😂
