AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on TH-cam are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

We take a pump up garden sprayer. It is for taking a shower. You will use hardly any water at all. Fill it up and set it in the sun and the water will be hot. Also good for rinsing dishes

I have a garden sprayer also; I spray painted it black, along with a couple of empty, rinsed out laundry detergent bottles. The water heats up much faster, and you can refill from the detergent bottles.

I've learned a lot from Burning Man campers. The pump up sprayer is one of the best lessons, both for "showers" and for cooling down. And if you're dry-camping (boon docking) for an extended period, then things like an evaporation device to dry grey water to solid waste, solar power, and most of all just being a human without technology has the biggest impact. I'm often wondering what John Muir would have thought about a 30'+ RV in the redwoods.

As a plumber what I did to the kitchen faucet and shower head is install a water saver disk in the aerator of the faucet and the hose where it attaches to the shower head. They're about the size of a dime with a 1/8th inch hole in the center and will conserve water very well. The lavatory faucet I installed a low flow aerator that they use with an instant hot point of use electric water heater that you install under the lavatory sink it's below .5 gpm flow. This has worked great for two of us boondocking.

Great video with lots of great ideas. One thing we do while extended dry camping is while taking a shower we stand in a rubbermaid tote. This captures much of our water used while showering and in turn we keep a water pitcher to fill the toilet bowl prior using the restroom. It keeps the water out of our grey tank and we are able to double use the water to aid in flushing our toilets. Cutting down on water twice. Keep up the great content.
    Take care and Safe Travels.

Reuse that water and save on soap too!

  • @prizantsproducts4u

I have two suggestions: 1. Regarding the wipes, Walmart has the Equate wipes, they are as good as Cottonelle, but a lot less expensive. I buy the 3-pack for almost $4, and/or the 6-pack for $5.96.
    2. I make a great body wash in an 8 oz spray bottle. Mix together, 2 oz olive oil, 2 oz alcohol, 4 oz of pure water, a few drops of peppermint oil, or tea tree oil (whatever you scent preference is.). Shake and spray on your face, etc. to wash. wipe off with a wipe or damp cloth.
Thank you for this video, I always enjoy your show. Traveling Mercies and God bless you!

I am a boondocker at heart also. Don't forget those solar panels! If you are a serious boon docker, you will have to generate power to put back into those batteries, plus, a good controller (MPPT) to ensure that you are making good use of every little bit of power generated! As for the water, don't forget the "hows to's" of taking those low water consumption showers, water only needed to flush in the toilet, etc. For most couples (in an Airstream) you can last at least a week boon docking without having to go to town to dump and refill. We also save the dirty dishes for one massive clean up rather than using water each time you dirty a fork or spoon. Thanks for this video!!!

We're ordering our new motor home with an Onan diesel generator and a 400W roof top solar system. We don't plan to boondock but we are concerned that a bad storm may take out an RV Park/Resort's electric service. We both use electric shavers and too many other things in the RV will be useless as well. We don't have water flow restrictors in our house but can see using them in the RV so noted to the shopping list! The RV comes with an inverter but we're adding a 'whole house' surge protector.
    Another GREAT video, THANKS!!

One trick we used on the boat was a 2 gal. hand held sprayer. You can see the water level. You just pump it up to get the pressure, adjust the nozzle and do a quick rinse. Another, one of my very favorites is the 5 gallon Super Solar Shower. They're black so when put in the sun they heat the water. Both keep you keenly aware of just how much water you are using. Thank you for the great tips.

I generally take 13 gallons of water with me if I'm going to be out long. We ran into a situation once where we ran out of water in the rig, and we still had one more day left. So we started using those big blue guys now for refills to the rv. Ours didn't come with a nozzle so we made one from a Gatorade bottle that worked great. The bottle now goes.with us always

I have used wastewater totes for years and recommend them for everyone. If you are in a campground that doesn't have sewer hook-ups, this is easier than moving the RV just to dump. Great suggestion about the jerry can. I recommend keeping a package of sanitary wipes where my dump valves are.

Blue boys are used for black and grey water. Many can be hooked to your tow vehicle's ball and towed to the dump site. There are a lot of RV parks these days without sewer hookups, making these items essential for all RV'ers.

We're new to the RV world, thanks for all you do! First day I discovered 2 products that few other than musicians or those with experience in studios have heard of and wanted to share. One is "Gaffer's" Tape, it looks, sticks and feels like duct tape, the only real difference is that it lifts clean off nearly any surface leaving no sticky mess behind, available in many colors and widths. The other is "Studio Foam" sound absorbing and insulating 1'x1' panels. Both are very useful, if anyone would like more info let me know. I used both building a sound reducing box for a small generator that converts to a solar hot water heater insulated with 2" recording studio foam panels. A sheet of 1/4" plywood cut in 4 pieces can connect as a 3 sided box & back to 4x8 with attached channels/cleats. 2" clear plastic (PVC also works) is attached to each piece, they connect to make 8 or more winding (like a maze) rows with a valve at the bottom. Leaned against anything in direct sun 2' off the ground on, 8 - 10 gallons can be put in, I leave an 8 gallon garden tank connected on top and a spray tank that fills on the side on the bottom. In bright, hot sunshine it will produce very hot in a surprisingly short amount of time. Thanks again for all your good deeds! info@stspros.com

I’m so glad I found your videos. So I am not a camper and my first time boondocking was this year for 30 days. At which point I had a meltdown and we found a motel. At least I know my limit lol. You two are so funny. Now that I have recovered I’m strangely wanting to be out in nature again. If you guys are ever on the Oregon Coast I have a driveway you can boondock in.

    S and K,
Two things I like to have for boondocking: A charcoal grill and disposable eating tools like plastic flatware, paper plates and cups. A charcoal grill saves propane makes BBQ flavor in most food items and keeps cooking oder and heat outside. I purchased a cheep folding grill at Walmart for $15, I also keep a non-stick, fiberglass grill mat (check B,B&B $10 for two) on hand to allow for grilling vegetables, some fruits, sandwiches and pizzas. Disposable eating tools have the upside of no water use and minor cleanup effort with a down side of more trash to dispose. Gotta weigh the pros and cons, i.e. it might be less hassle to haul trash than to haul water and regarding the grill some food is not grill friendly and it can be a bother to add fuel (charcoal) to extend the cooking time.
Thanks for your list, I enjoy your channel and hope to run into you some day.
    Jim

I had a hi-lo trailer that held only about 11 gallons of fresh water. My remedy was to get a 45 Gal water bag. I built a wood box that was 4 x 8 x 6". With plywood top that was hinged to open from back and put water bag in there. And stored other items on that. Then when needed I would transfer that water via hose to trailer tank.

    Guys:
I have extensive experience wilderness backpacking ( carrying everything on your back for a 1 week hiking trip) .
There are some excellent water filters for filtering stream or lake water. Some of these will filter substantial volumes of water for safe use. This would be excellent supplemental source of fresh water when boon docking.
    Enjoy your videos greatly.

Love your videos. One thing we really like for our RV is our "Berkey Go" travel water filter. We have Big Berkey at our home and at our farm cabin as well and love it. Our grandkids ask for Berkey-juice instead of soda. The Go-Berkey is small so it requires more refilling than the bigger versions, but we store the Berkey juice in the Fridge and it is so good.

If your camper is equipped with a winterizing port I will use a short hose to suck the water from my Jerry can so I do not have to hold it. It can either be left this way and change the cans as they empty or, with our camper, the gravity fill hole and outside shower is right there. I stick the outside shower hose into the gravity tank fill. Turn on the shower and the pump sucks the water from the jerry can and puts it right into my tank. Lets me walk away and do some other things for a few minutes while it drains the jerry can.

Great video and suggestions as always. We have been at the TT life for a long time, and I have got to say - the blue pooper,
should be one that comes with a built in loop for towing (poop is heavier than water :) Not to mention, many remote locations allow for gray water dumping (not black for anyone that reads this and PLEASE DON'T) but not at campsites. Sure would like to see how you haul yours (or do you put it in the back of your truck). We placed ours on a hitch basket, but a better and cheap solution has got to exist.

Great tips! Being new to rving one of my biggest concerns is not getting stuck at the gas station. My travel trailer is under 23 feet from Hitch to bumper but with the truck the combined length is 42 feet. It would be great to see videos on navigating between the refueling Islands. Another concern is getting safely on and off of an RV roof. I’ve probably watched 50 videos of people climbing a ladder and never showing the transition from the ladder to the roof.

Alternate shower suggestion: rub yourself down with baby powder, scrub down with Walmart "Assure" bath cloths. I did this for 23 days while camping and white water rafting on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The baby powder works like magic - dirt and sand just sloughs right off. Felt fresh as a daisy and smelled great, too! Preemptive answer to questions: No, you cannot bathe in the river or the side streams because (1) no shampoo or soap allowed; (2) the water is 49 degrees and full of Sandy sediment; (3) the water is so swift you'll get swept away and your body will never be found; (4) No, there are no motels on the river through the GC - except Phantom Ranch - pay showers two weeks in.

Enjoy your videos. I made a few notes on what to get before we head out to the Mighty Five. However, a basic power inverter is a "Modified Sine Wave" and not recommended for electronic devices such as computers and tvs. It is best to have a pure sine wave inverter for sensitive electronics. Basic inverters are good for lights bulbs and small electric motors (or my soldering iron).

Boondocking! Ah, now we come to what my wife and I are thinking we are going to be doing a lot of. Thanks for the tips!
Oh, and we just bought our first diesel pickup to replace or gas one. We opted to go 2-WD, my first of 5 pickups that I have owned. Mileage, mileage, mileage....hopefully!

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You know, when I was researching the 2WD/4WD issue a decade ago, I read a lot of opinions. The bottom line is that 2WD has many advantages especially for towing (better mileage, lower ride height, better handling, less maintenance, and lower up front cost). I once did the math; we've probably saved over $10k in fuel costs alone by opting for 2WD. But of course 2WD has one big disadvantage - if you get your rear wheels in slippery grass or loose sand, you will discover it. ;) The only time we've ever gotten stuck, 4WD vehicles also got stuck (long story, but a huge group of us were camping in a muddy field). I think you should probably carry some sort of traction aid with you, just in case. We carry one now, though we've never used it.

Reminds me of a story once....long ago...when a group of us were "four-wheeling: 3 4-WD's and one 2-WD. I and the other two with 4 WD all got stuck, not once, but twice, in a large and rather infamous mud bog. My friend with a 2WD Ford had to pull us all out, twice each! LOL True story. Thing is, HE knew how to drive and we, having 4 wheels, didn't - relying on the highly over-rated 4's. As I've said, I've owned 5 pickups and this is my first 2-wd, and my first diesel. Already, it has payed off in dividends. Ours is a Ram Ecodiesel and we are seeing 18+ mpg towing - nearly 30 when not.

I just wanted to comment on the small battery pack. I started to prefer to get the ones that can also function as jump starter. I now carry one in my pickup and found there are some that can even start diesel pickups with low batteries.

tip: make sure you are familiar with your tank monitor system...also that it actually works, is calibrated..."RV geeks" had a good video on that as I recall...not sure yall ever did one on that...I verified my micropulse monitoring unit when it went "red" in the gray tank, that it had perhaps 3 more gallons to go before backing up into the shower.
video suggestion: have yall done any video on a mattress...we are still using our stock airstream mattress from buying in 2013, and I am done with it....no idea where to go now.

Most new campers come with an inverter if they also opted to have a Residential Refer installed at the factory. If you didn't choose to have a RR installed then the factory, as a rule will generally not install an inverter.

Marcia, my wife, loves her air conditioner and because of that I am having a hard time convincing her to do some boon docking. We are planning an out west trip for July (our first cross country with an RV) and I want to so a little BLM land, she wants to stick to independent parks, and state/national parks with shore power. I keep showing her videos like this in hopes of convincing her it will not be as "horrible" as she thinks. Thanks for your videos!

In certain parts of the west you can get by without A/C. (You need to be north, though.) I agree it is tough in the middle of summer. Honestly we wouldn't camp in the South without A/C (at least not for most of the year!). With a 3000W generator you can have A/C wherever you please... :)

    • @jackhall4680
      @jackhall4680 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Look into the Micro-Air Soft Start (Easy Start) attachment for your A/C. You can run many A/C types with a single 2200W Honda gen. Instead of 2. Cost is $300+, but worth it

A pure sine wave inverter is best for sensitive electronics. I have two questions, have you ever used a fuel transfer tank in your pick up. It would seem safer and it could be filled when you get closer to your destination. Would you suggest a winch for the front of your truck?

This might be a no Brainerd but most people don't know how to wash dishes while boondocking....so make your own set up.
1st-Dont put dirty dishes in the sink, use the paper towel or spoon to scrape off all of the residue, if the plate is oily, use a spray bottle with a bit of Dawn, and vinegar, I use 3 teaspoons to a litter, this gets grease off.
    2. Use a collapsible bucket with clear water to dunk debris free dish to rinse.
    3. Use a clean dish rag to dry off the dishes to put away, that way if there is any spot you missed it won't cake on.
    4. Use that rinse water to clean your windows, stairwell, I save it for next days dishes or to wash all my rags.
P.S. If you use Dr. BROWNS, and vinegar in your spray bottle you can also use that mixture on washing body. 1 spray bottle, 2 or 3 jobs

The phone battery that you showed in your video is good, but I love my battery bank even more: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017QUHB44/ I own all Mac products (MacBook Air, iPad, iPhones, etc) and this battery bank is AWESOME to recharge all of those products, not just a phone. It also charges anything that recharges via USB or mini-USBs, such as walkie-talkies and cameras. One battery pack that does it all! We even left it out on accident and it got DUMPED on by a really wild rainstorm, and it still works like a champ! I can't more highly recommend it. The only part I don't love is that it won't recharge directly from a solar panel. You can only recharge by plugging into a 120-volt outlet. Otherwise, it's awesome - wouldn't leave home without it!

I'm a new sub, have clicked the bell, and loving your vids. I have also been sharing them with my Florida friends who are beginning a journey with RVing. I'm originally from FL. and currently living in VA. We are working our way toward becoming full time nomads. I know that camping equals nature...and rodents and bugs. Do you have a video on how to deal with pest control in your RV? If so, please link me here! I saw your vid about important kitchen items, where you briefly showed an interesting mouse trap you used, but would love to see a video completely dealing with RV pest control. I enjoy certain bugs, but "outdoors". Then there are certain bugs that I could completely do without. Please inform on the good, bad and ugly of it. 😂 Thanks for all of your info!
