What Dr. Abati fails to understand is that the court of public opinion becomes law over time in a society where votes count. Our elites don’t get it because they are either privileged or corrupt. Opinions become law in a true democracy because voters vote in people that align with their views. In Nigeria our opinions don’t matter because our votes don’t count. We still pay bribe in all police stations in Nigeria to effect bail. As a voter I don’t want defamation or peaceful protest to be criminalized. These are all issues I will vote for if I find a politician that will do the right things. Until that revolution happens like it did in Syria the elite will continue to take us for granted and our cry for change called ordinary opinions. American politicians made the same mistake until voters threw reason out the window to vote a crazy man they trust would listen. There's a saying that it is wrong for someone to be a judge in their own case. But here is a classic example of that saying only that in this case, it is the judiciary that is on trial; which seriously begs the question: who gets to decide a matter in which the judiciary itself is involved? The intervention by Peter Obi and other well-meaning Nigerians to settle this impasse is not just welcome but also timely. But no one should expect Mr. Farotimi to come cowering before his adversaries because they have the backing of a corrupt judicial establishment. No matter how long the corrupt forces of oppression seek to trouble and antagonize Mr. Farotimi, more and more people are getting to know the truth, and that truth sides with him.

What Dr. Abati fails to understand is that the court of public opinion becomes law over time in a society where votes count. Our elites don’t get it because they are either privileged or corrupt. Opinions become law in a true democracy because voters vote in people that align with their views. In Nigeria our opinions don’t matter because our votes don’t count. We still pay bribe in all police stations in Nigeria to effect bail. As a voter I don’t want defamation or peaceful protest to be criminalized. These are all issues I will vote for if I find a politician that will do the right things. Until that revolution happens like it did in Syria the elite will continue to take us for granted and our cry for change called ordinary opinions. American politicians made the same mistake until voters threw reason out the window to vote a crazy man they trust would listen. I just pray that revolution does not come in the form of a military coup.
The court of public opinion doesn't become law in the sense you are making it. Whenever we are talking niche or speciality issues you can trust people to bring Corruption into the matter. When arguments cannot be had with intellect or fact folk bring in corruption to raise emotions and try sway the entire thing their way.
