In 1977 I was in high school. And the student council kept trying to get crappy little local garage bands to play school dances. And we could not sell any tickets. One day, one of the council members came in with a brochure. If you booked a band on a Tuesday, you could get them for really a bargain price. So we took a risk. We booked Max Webster. That's right. Max Webster played my high school. We paid more for them to play a 3 hour set than we had ever paid for a band. By a LOT. And we sold the tickets as fast as we physically could. And wound up making a profit on the night, even though the tickets were the most expensive we had ever had for a dance. Also by a LOT. Lesson learned. Get a good band and you will fill the hall. After that we started booking in other big name bands on Tuesdays. But MW was the pioneer.
In 1977 or 1978 I ran across a copy of "High Class in Borrowed Shoes" in a used record store in Atlanta. I liked the album cover and bought it (was like $0.99). Ironically it had one of those "promotional copy only - not for sale" stickers. Anyway, I took it home and it didn't leave my turntable for days. It was only later that I put it together that this was the same band being named checked by Rush in their album liner notes.
Great clip! Thanks so much. Wish there was more like this on such an underrated band that most people never heard of. I never knew David Stone played with Max?? Didn't he play with Rainbow too in the Dio era? Awesome!
@@sspbrazilWow, I couldn't agree less. Kim maybe struggling a bit live on this clip, but on Universal Juveniles his voice is terrific. The lyrics to plenty of MW are way more innovative and interesting than standard rock fare. Having said that, they did put out some mediocre stuff.
Man Max Webster were a kick ass band. They get judged solely on their recording but in that, your missing half the magic, have to hear them live to really appreciate the music I think. That sounds so great.
"the Party"...Geez, have not heard that one in a very long time!! those bloody lyrics are hilarious, I'd forgotten just how funny some of Max's stuff was.....as someone else mentioned, similar to Frank Zappa, Max Webster had a great sense of humour!!
Woh! He wrote the original the original lyrics to Tom Sawyer, which never made it on the album. The lyrics didn't fit in the beats and measures of any song structure, so Neil Peart edited it quite heavily. That's why Pye doesn't have any credits on the album.
Yeah they were still Max, but Terry complemented Kim perfectly. His absence is noticable on Universal Juveniles. It's a good album, but it's much more even and predictable than most of their albums, straight ahead hard rock boogie. I like it, Mutiny Up My Sleeve is my least favorite. The rest are pretty epic across a number of lineup changes. Kim Mitchell was the visionary, Terry Watkinson was also essential to their sound.
@@Star_Sn1per Its a tossup. Rush is good, but Max Webster was off the chain. Rush stuck to what worked during a given period of creativity, Max always had a few irons in the fire, they did concept albums that pivoted from one style to the next, never settling on a particular formula.
If I recall Greg Chadd who was in Saga cut out the live playing because his girl was expecting a baby and he was going to be a family guy if I recall correctly. So that's how Dave Stone got into the Max machine.
Dave Stone was in the band before Chadd. Chadd played with the 5 man lineup during fall 1980 that had Mike Gingrich on bass and Steve McMurry on 2nd guitar and was eventually replaced by the returning Terry Watkinson.
Keys were late on the Party. Fastest skinniest fingers in the game, Kim Mitchell -- I remember the Environment Canada Cable forecast. This must have been Maclean Hunter broadcast in Mississauga :-) 11:09
Paul Kersey kick ass drummer also played in The Hunt who recorded The Thrill Of The Kill album which has been consigned to history but nevertheless, in my humble Limey opinion is one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded
A young JD Roberts doing the interview just a short time before Much Music was launched in Canada and before he sold out to became one of the talking heads for American news on tv...meh...can't say I blame him. He was great on Much Music along with Christopher Ward who was also great.
JD Roberts was a cool guy then. now (2019) he’s John David Roberts. Fox News’ chief White House correspondent. I bet he wonders sometimes when it all went wrong.. how can he get back to the late 70s. hell, how can *I* get back to the late 70s!!!
My 3 Canadian fav bands, Rush, Max Webster and Saga.

Awesome! How was the show?😊
Universal Juveniles was the top of my cassette tunes back in high school, it's still amazing!
Crazy classic album
A mind blowing album in its day.
Super under rated talent...the rock just flows outa him.
Cool to see JD Roberts interview the boys from Max Webster.....sweet. Truly Canadian!!
Five of us travelled to Newcastle for a gig in January 1981 that was cancelled, never found out why! Lost my wallet too. Love the band still though!
Awesome interview and what makes it even better was filmed in my home town of Barrie..
Thank you. Been on a Max kick lately. They were so unique, the world deserves to see them.

I don’t think they are underrated, I don’t think they were that great. Fine musicians, but the vocals and lyrics were pretty lame.

And Universal Juveniles turned out to be my favorite album .
Same here
That interviewer... now serious broadcast newsguy John Roberts.
"the Party"...Geez, have not heard that one in a very long time!!

Pye Dubois, the man who co-wrote Tom Sawyer with Rush.
Woh! He wrote the original the original lyrics to Tom Sawyer, which never made it on the album. The lyrics didn't fit in the beats and measures of any song structure, so Neil Peart edited it quite heavily. That's why Pye doesn't have any credits on the album.
Best Canadian band ever. Ever.
After Terry Watkinson left they weren't the same though.
2nd best canadian band.. You forgot Rush!!

Rush are the kings of Canadian rock bands . Max Webster were the dukes .
He was such a big part of their sound. I kinda stopped being a fan after he left. Just not the same.
I swear one day that guy will be a newscaster
FANTASTICO... Max Webster
Love the Phase One hockey shirt
Thanks for posting this. Very cool.
what a great line up
For the life of me, I can´t understand why these guys weren´t way more popular than they were.
I remember people shouting "Wally" at gigs, not sure if that still goes on!
If I recall Greg Chadd who was in Saga cut out the live playing because his girl was expecting a baby and he was going to be a family guy if I recall correctly. So that's how Dave Stone got into the Max machine.

Kim's voice totally reminds me of Frank Zappa.
forgottenchannels good comparison, he is eclectic with lyrics as well, lol truly a Canadian treasure, and a serious killer lead guitar wizard!
no way, FZ sings like shit, Max is a way better musician
Keys were late on the Party. Fastest skinniest fingers in the game, Kim Mitchell -- I remember the Environment Canada Cable forecast. This must have been Maclean Hunter broadcast in Mississauga :-) 11:09
Damn, Kim sounds like Frank Zappa when he was talking around this time.
Paul Kersey kick ass drummer also played in The Hunt who recorded The Thrill Of The Kill album which has been consigned to history but nevertheless, in my humble Limey opinion is one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded
Martin Aston
The drummer here though is Gary McCracken

don't forget Michael Williams in that 1st MM lineup
Cheers
Yes, I remember him! That was a solid lineup they had.
JD Roberts was a cool guy then. now (2019) he’s John David Roberts. Fox News’ chief White House correspondent. I bet he wonders sometimes when it all went wrong.. how can he get back to the late 70s. hell, how can *I* get back to the late 70s!!!
This feature sadly is the beginning of the end for the Max Machine. Amazing band. A Canadian legend.
Kim got a big head.
Why do the British like Canadian bands? "They like the aluminum snow shoes we send them."
Justin Stearns ...or was it the ARCTIC double dome acid? And what was that? LSD from Nunavut??
"Here's Lucy...she's choosey of who calls her on the phone!!?"
i have the rehearsal clip as well , check my other videos , it's in there......
Max machine in their Zenith
"Receding slowly to meet Kim's hair line"
anyone have the full performance video from the simulcast?
full performance was never on Video...but an edited performance was all that aired....
What a pair of Wallies. Dig that crazy music though.
Pye: That's "Mancunian" accent.
HIGH AS FUCK
8:19 Live at Mulletfest lol
We need kimbo back again in big d , we dont want him takin a break from our face!
Kim was such a snazzy dresser.
Jon Roberts was doing this before being a Fox news chump.
They look buzzed....
Manchestrian accent. hahaha
Max is Canadian gold and Kim is one of my all-time favourite musical artists.
Pye Dubois turned out to be an annoying parasite. He demanded to be a band member complete with a salary.
