    Your Good Teeth...are your last possession of value, when you've blown through all your money and all your belongings, and you're still hoping to strike it big with one last gamble, you pull your gold teeth and roll them for one last desperate bet...

    No band comes close to the quality of music at this magnitude.

    I've been listening to Steely Dan for 40 years and never cared too much about the lyrics. Even though I'm a writer by trade, I come to the music for the, yes, music, and Steely Dan is one of the greatest in that regard

      Research more into the song meanings and then most of the lyrics start to make sense. Not all of the lyrics, but most.

    5:05 I agree. I can listen to a pop/rock/latin/soul song for 30-35 years before paying attention to the lyrics. (Such as Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Sérgio Mendes, Sivuca, Airto Moreira/Flora Purim, Fanny, Sweet, Blondie, Abba, Sparks, and so on.) Being jazz oriented, you tend to focus on chords, scales, grooves.

    An FYI on Steely Dan lyrics. I am a huge Dan fan. I've been listening to them for close to 50 years. I remember when their first album was released in 1972. I was 20 and I fell in love with them and have been in love with the Dan ever since. On their lyrics; sometimes; well, a lot of the time, they tell a story; usually about odd characters or the underside of life. But occasionally their lyrics are just nonsense lyrics. They're fun lyrics, but really are not deep but more nonsensical. Walter Becker was the main lyricist and could be very deep and tell marvelous stories filled with really interesting characters. But at times he had an odd sense of humor and it would come out in his nonsensical lyrics.

      People that say the lyrics of Steely Dan are nonsense are people who don't get the meaning and so assume they are nomsense. Just because you don't understand them doesn't mean they are nonsense.

    • @guitarman0551
      @guitarman0551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelblaydes6037 I didn't say that all Steely Dan lyrics are nonsense. If you actually read my comment you'll see that. What I said was the majority of their lyrics are stories, but there are some that are just nonsense lyrics. Walter Becker said that himself in an interview. I think YOU are the one who needs to look at things a little more closely and not be criticizing other people's comments when you don't know what you're talking about.

    THANK YOU for reacting to this track!!! Excellent reaction! Much like you I prefer to hear the music before delving into the lyrics. Back in the day most of my friends would buy an album and immediately read the lyrics whilst the vinyl spun. I just prefer to close my eyes and be enveloped by the magical sounds. I appreciate what you do.

    Music and the feeling first man, always. Well that’s what I do anyway. Analysing lyrics and music at the same time, especially with this caliber of musicianship, is too much on the first run through. This music reminds me of my old man cranking this stuff on the lounge room hifi system when I was kid. Good stuff that I have come to appreciate more and more. Love your vids.

    These are some of their more obscure lyrics IMO. But I agree I'm also a player and I love Jazz, so I'm also instrumentally oriented and it's always the groove, chord changes, instrumentation, arrangement, solos, feel, melody, etc..that grab me before I pay any real attention to the lyrics.

    Probably my fav tune off the stacked gem of Countdown. Fagens electric piano. The relentless drive of it. The cool first line referencing deja vu. Probably their most laid back tune on Countdown, but the jazziest. Hints of what's coming in Aja (tobacco they grow in Peking).
    I really didn't truly appreciate how good this tune was until they led off with this tune during the 2013 tour I I think when I saw them live 6 times! Hearing this gem in a live setting to start 6 concerts was ear opening and very cool. Its now one of my favorites. It takes its time. Not in a rush. It breathes.
    A lot of great jazzy soloing on this. This is a deep cut that the diehards love.
    Re the lyrics, I would resist bothering to get or analyze the lyrics on FIRST listen. I think you are doing it right just taking in the music and the vibe first on initial listen. Then you go back after a few listens and try to decipher the lyrics and song meaning. Fagen and Becker are purposely obscure and oblique in their lyrical references so that aspect takes years. This is a band named after a dildo in a Wliiam Burroughs novel, Naked Lunch for crying out loud. I've been listening to them for almost 50 years, and there are still songs I don't get or fully understand. And in many cases thats purposeful. So do the music first, worry about song meanings later.
    As others mention, F&B are sarcastic, jaded, and like to explore the edges of society, and like Dylan, they are purposely vague and obscure. They sing about a lot of nasty and controversial subjects, but rope you in with the smooth jazzy sheen, the pleasant vocal and musical veneer they put on the song to fool the listener as to what exactly is going on, what reallyis their intention. They grew up in the beatnik generation days, they idolized guys like Lenny Bruce, so this is their sophisticated version of being subversive. And they are masters at it.

    Yeah. I've always loved SD for their "music". The lyrics are always interesting, but I don't always get them. I figure they know what they mean and that's good enough for me. Now, I will say that when I've researched songs like Kid Charlemagne and Deacon Blues they make a lot more sense. Then there are songs like Dirty Work and Hey 19 which are pretty obvious.

  • @mikewritz
    @mikewritz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Research the meanings to their songs and then the lyrics start to make sense. Not all of the lyrics, but most. One of my favorite things about SD is how many different lyrical interpretations people come up with for any given song.

    One thing i've discovered listening to rock music for 40 years is that lyrics don't always make sense. And that's ok. SD lyrical content i have always found interesting, and there's usually some message or story there even tho it might not be apparent at first. And I love Fagen's non-rock-singer delivery... it just fits the music.

    Hey. The complexities of the writing of Donald Fagen, lead singer of most Steely Dan songs is so obtuse that you'd get lost in the lyrics and varied subject matters. He has this off center sense of humor, so much so that there is almost a sub language forming. There is a Steely Dan dictionary, I suggest you Google it. Some of the words and phrases have a much deeper and robust interpretation. Itll blow your mind.

    Yes, mostly nonsense lyrics... except there was actually a Cathy Berberian, opera diva soprano (died 1983) who can and did sing just about anything, from opera to animation voices to The Beatles! I don't know the "one roulade (sp?) she can't sing", though.

    Hi. I do reactions to reactions. THis guy, known as "Jellow Face", has done a very boring reaction to gold teeths…..he seems really into it. I think he probably smoked some hash, and maybe a blunt with some angel dust and kind bud mix.....I like that, I like that about him....I think he was probably use to heavy medal, like hawkwind, meggeadeath, pantera, etc. so this is very chill for jellowface…..please don't subscribe . you will just encourage him to continue.
