    I had the same issues with the Hope Love Faith kit. I made 2 pens for a friend that was getting married. Kind of a matched set out of beautiful Olivewood. The fit was horrible and didn't line up at the middle like you were saying. Also, on one of the pens, when I was screwing the cap on the threads twisted off into the cap. I was very unhappy about that. The wedding was only 4 days away, and there wasn't anything Penn State could do. I haven't and may not ever buy another kit from them again. Those aren't cheap kits, and the blanks were pricey too. I ended up only giving them one, and I almost didn't do that. I'm still not happy with that pen. I sanded it to make it look better, but not great at all. Thanks for the videos!!!

      I have had mostly good experiences with Penn State Ind. They ship fast and I never had a screwed up order. Yes, a few of the kits are sub-par, but I have been extremely happy with the quality of most of them, including the whole Slimline line. The Celtic, Gatsby Grande, Stratus, Princess, Classic, and many others are exceptional kits I have been very happy with and I have bought a lot of other product off of Pen State. My advice would be to not dismiss them over one kit or even a bad customer service experience. I understand they have had some problems in the past but I have found them to be a great company.

    I have learned with many PSI kits to turn between centers (TBC) and use calipers to ensure proper fit between the components and the blanks. PSI bushings can be very sketchy and mis-sized.

    Hi Bob, !m glad I found your video, on the one I made I had the same problem as you,with a gap on the middle band, I got over mine by pushing the threaded piece in by about a extra mm in the nib end, this closed the gap, it now looks and works a lot better. Hope this helps. Roger☠️

      @ramaroodle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roger, how did you manage to do that? The threaded piece seems to bottom out and wont go any deeper. That's probably the reason my tip isn't quite fully extended.

  • @snooker1945
    @snooker1945 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Andy G, if your nib is not full extended,you can cheat by putting a very small piece of packing (plastic,or wood)in the cap end,before you put the refill in,make sure it’s loose in there,so it doesn’t get stuck, Worth a try, Regards Roger.

    I like those kinds of pens from PSI. I bought their skull pen, and I have a gap at the same place you were having an issue on yours. Though, they have a significant difference. The two halfs of the pen screw together, they do not press together as your dragon pen. I'm not an expert pen turner, but it seems like the threads do not allow you to screw it together until it is flush. The gap is tiny, but obvious.

    In case no one else has stumbled upon this fix.....
    Regarding the gap between the tubes...The problem is with the instructions, not the kit itself. The issue is that the part of the coupler assembly that is the outer ring with the dragon fingers engraved on it is NOT "uni-directional". It is machined differently on each end and only one end accepts the piece that inserts into it properly. The best way for me to describe it is that with the nib on your left, that ring has to be oriented with the 3 fingers pointing down to meet the thumb, if that makes sense. If you look at all of the pics in the catalog and even in the instructions it is oriented that way, they just don't tell you that.

    nice job on the pen Bob. Was happy to hear a "seasoned" turner like you still refers to the instruction sheet. When I get ready to assemble any pen I lay out all the parts like you did in the video except I lay them on the instruction sheet. Made a mistake one time and it was enough for me. Yes it is a few extra seconds but that is nothing compared to time and cost of disassembly and repair if needed and able to ... just curious did one of your clients ask for this pen, or another for your "sale display"? When you sell this pen how much do you charge? So far all my pens have been gifts and am thinking of selling some on a "part-time" basis. I don't want to lose money, but at the same time I know I won't make a weeks wages on one pen either. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

      +Bruce Peter Hello Bruce,
      I made this for the upcoming show, I'm hoping it draws people into the booth. I haven't settled on a price yet but I'll have that issue to face soon.
      When pricing my pens, it was trial and error. I put a price on them I'd be comfortable paying. If they sold well I raised it a bit if they didn't I might drop a few dollars or drop that kit line all together. The area I live in is very frugal so sales are tough and the pens have to be really nice or they won't even look.

    Bob - Great video as usual! That blank is awesome. You are an excellent turner, my friend. A couple curiosity questions. What speed are you turning the acrylic blank? Is the roughing gouge a 3/4" Benjamins Best? What position do you start at turning your blank relative to the gouge (in the middle?).

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +joe little Hello Joe,
      I run my lathe wide open. Yes it is the Benjamin's Best 3/4". If the tool rest to the turning is 90 degrees I'm at roughly 135 degrees from the turning. That's a tough one because of the bevel of the tool.

    Sir I watch your videos a lot. Ps that dragon 🐉 pen 🖊 Dazzles.
    I had a problem when I got a 720 dollar bundle from penstate. During the Covid I lost hours at work. I took the trump check I finally got and ordered a lathe from them. When it arrived I was excited to get started and learn and maybe make a few bucks. I took the lathe out if the box got it all set up turned it on for the first time and went from o to 800 rpm on the dial the box smoked and blew all to hell. I was in the phone for 45 days trying to get a new controller or get them to send me one. Pen state failed. It never was resolved they was quick to take my 720 but always blamed Covid for slow response. A old man always answered and talked to me like I’m a damn fool. I was the guitar tech for black stone cherry 🍒 and traveled to 33 countries in the world 🌎 running sound for my cousins band on tour with nickel back. Anyway I thought if I can run that show for a year and not know how to hook up a damn lathe I’d be a dumb ass at 50. Anyway I seen in your video where you said those pen ends didn’t match up. That really told me all I need to know about pen state. I thought about driving from Kentucky to the main office a 11 hour drive and toss it thru the front door
    😂😉🖊🤔😆😆😆😆🥃. I bought a second hand lathe and I’m rolling it works a hell of a lot better than the new 720 dollar box of pen state shit ball
    I shouldn’t cuss but when I needed customer service none was given. I sense been buying blanks and parts from
    Www.woodturningz.com they have been really great 👍 and talk to me like I talk to them super nice 👍 and their pen kits are really nice. They sent me 10 free pen kits because of what pen state did to me. When their a different company. You know quality and kindness goes hand and hand. During that time I thought about quit n before I got started but I’d watch your videos and you sir motivated me to keep going when I couldn’t get a lathe after spending 720 dollars 💵... anyway thank you sir for your expert advice and quality of work you do and giving a honest opinion on products and not watering down the truth to get a free this or that or reviews
    I will buy a pen from you just because I like your videos. You speak well and explain things
