- The beautiful Alleghany Highlands contains many natural wonders, one of which is Lake Moomaw, just north of Covington, Virginia. The lake was created by the Gathright Dam, construction of which started in 1974 and was completed in 1979. The volume of the lake is 40 billion gallons (with a maximum depth of 152 feet) and when releases are made, they flow into the famous Jackson River below.
The lake is known for its trout (rainbow, brown and brook), among other species. The dam is 257 feet high and 1,310 feet long. The lake's surface area is 3.9 square miles. The dam is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. This is a view of the area on June 26, 2019.
