I know, right? That extra eighth note definitely gives it an edge. Enough to make you a little uncomfortable while keeping the mechanical feel. Like staggered footsteps.
What really got me in this game was when I first saw the bosses in their metal forms going off the assembly lines. That's when I made the chilling realization: all those bosses I talked to before - even the Axem Rangers - they weren't people, they were *things*! Machines that could be as easily replaced as I could replace a broken keyboard. All the personality they'd had, all the things they'd said, it was all MANUFACTURED! I had to stop playing and calm down for a few minutes after that.
Did that shock you? Too much to take in huh, yes they are all machine made foes, Exor was the gate linking 2 world's, Smithy's and Mario's I had wished they had a deeper storyline showing a battalion of these machines ready for a mass scale invasion.
To be fair, it wasn't that many. Just Mack, Bowyer, Yaridovich, the Axems, and some fodder enemies. There were plenty more bosses in the game that weren't machines. Bosses like Punchinello, Belome, Croco, Megasmilax, Johnny Jones, Valentina and Dodo, they were all just people. Heck, even for late-game bosses like Exor, Boomer, Cloaker and Domino, there's no evidence to suggest they were Machine Made. But yeah I agree with you, it's a hell of a revelation.
This song always gave me a dark, emotional feeling, especially when I would be walking around in a dark fog over an abyss with reapers, goos, and manufactured monsters of the past lurking all around me with a cold bloodlust in their hearts. *shivers*
I am actually here listening to it because I was algorithmically-fed a video on "Popular Compositions in 13/8" featuring this song. It's a good one to have stuck in your head. It's the first time I have listened to game music for pleasure outside of a game.
Ah world long faded off life... a world that was so consumed by war, that war eventually overthrew the people. One robot with the power of creation, with one purpose; create an army and rage war, turned against it's creators, consuming it's world and reducing it to a mere production line... all just to conquer untill there's nothing left to take. Only ghosts remain of those who were slaughtered by the army meant to serve them in their escapades, roaming amongst the weapons they filled to contain. This... is the factory.
That feeling of being close to the end...but also not wanting it to be the end...but the combo of the adrenaline and anticipation makes you press ever forward to see what is ahead :D
Music is divided into measures in order to keep reading easier. In this case, you count to 13 each measure before starting over you count eighth notes. 4/4 is standard. You count 4 quarter notes then repeat. Try counting the beat in this song. It'll repeat after 13
When I enter the factory for the first time and saw what looked like dead bodies, i was thinking, "Could those be dead bodies of those who tried to fight Smithy before?..." Right there is when the factory first got to me. Then I thought the ghost enemies that attack Mario and Co. are really the spirits of those dead bodies, and that they're only attacking them because either they're not being left for rest because of Smithy, or that they don't want Mario and Co. to suffer like how they did...
Omg, the more I think about it, the angrier I get that square walked off with rights to Geno and Mallow... fuck, now we're NEVER going to get them in a Mario Kart game.
@1000redips I know! It just makes me wanna cry. Makes me feel like I'm in a cold metal factory at night, and I am a prisoner, and there is only a single crack throught the wall of my cell, and I can feel the warm sunshine come throught, and I see a butterfly, But as I stretch out my hand to hold it, The wall seals itself and the butterfly turns to metal. Man, I'm making myself depressed just thinking about it! :(
i love this song so much! its so awesome! my favorite in mario rpg! i remember the road to smitty! fighting those tools over and over to max my ppls lvls! oh how i miss this classic!
@Dassassafras From what I've heard it was actually going to be a DIRECT sequel (with returning characters and locales) but around the time production began Square jumped ship to the PSX, which left Nintendo to finish the game on their own, hence the very strong similarities in themes/locations. Keep in mind this is just a rumor I heard, but it does make sense given the game Paper Mario became.
@uchiha1521 I thought a "company reunion" would be a neat idea, but I think things function a lot differently today, to an extent that may not really happen. Hopefully, the big N, together with S-E (boy could you imagine both Final Fantasy AND Dragon Quest characters in the same game?) can make a new Super Mario RPG (nothing like the Paper Mario series).
@Ateykwa Well, full 3D had to start somewhere, bear in mind. At the time, most people were impressed enough with the idea of full 3D to not gripe about the quality of the graphics. It does look kind of goofy in retrospect, I'll admit.
@Ateykwa i feel like the smaller scale of required illustration on the SNES graphics made more room for artful graphics, rather than some of the bland solid color environments that were sometimes what we got
@yalltookthegoodnames Well, Genesis did do the song "turn it on again" which is (mostly) in 13/8, and this song is entirely in that TS; funny you should mention them, I just picked up invisible touch on vinyl record a few days back.
@musicByJake Well a lot of people probably could, but I guess it takes a lot of imagination and experimentation to tinker with such an irregular meter : P
@NARFNra I got nothing against Paper Mario's games; Paper Mario was the first Mario-related RPG I played and completed. However, nothing much really changed outside the "flat" realm other than differences in the battle system(s), when sequels came out. Paper will always be...paper. Super Mario RPG was all 3D, all the time. What' I'd give to see a Paper Mario game get "inflated" to bring back something that's gone missing for the past couple generations. S-E, NIntendo, reunion please!!
@KingOfKatamari ha ha ha, hell yes. Odd time signatures are a way of life. 5/4 and 6/4 alternating, you say? Nice work, but I imagine that would become jarring as a percussionist. I swear, keeping the beat to an odd time signature is exhausting. Mess up once and the whole thing falls apart (particularly if it's an X/8 piece)
if you think that's difficult try mar- ya know what, I don't feel like throwing marx's theme at anyone who remotely brings up time signatures, it gets ridiculous how many people do this.
@Ateykwa after seeing video on youtube of the N64 i was like to myself i had that system. Only game that acutally had good graphic on the N64 was Yoshi Story and paper mario that's pretty much the others were kindda of putting now that i seeit
God I can't wait to hear this in the remake
I almost cried when I heard they were remaking it, I never though it would be possible because of the different companies.
Yoko is coming back for the remake, too. The Queen has returned.
Yeah.. I straight up searched this and Smithy's final form theme after I saw the remake XD
Upset this comment is from 2 months ago and not 9 years ago, I wanted to go find it
@@ShaDHP23Is she the person who made the OST for the original??
Sweet use of 13/8 meter in this composition.
this is what I came here to find out. thank you good person.
I know, right? That extra eighth note definitely gives it an edge. Enough to make you a little uncomfortable while keeping the mechanical feel. Like staggered footsteps.
It’s hard to make out unless you’re actually listening for it.

While Smithy doesn't pose much of a threat, his drumming skills are phenomenal! 0:57

I see you based game enjoyer 13 years later. I feel ya homie. Keep on keeping on.
Honestly one of the coolest compositions I've ever heard in a Mario game, let alone any game. That time signature is too good.
Yeah, it's amazing how good it sounds, even though it's in 13/8. (Actually, it could be 14/8, but I'm fairly certain it's the first.)
I am actually here listening to it because I was algorithmically-fed a video on "Popular Compositions in 13/8" featuring this song. It's a good one to have stuck in your head. It's the first time I have listened to game music for pleasure outside of a game.
Best song in the game by far.
It's great but I like Seaside Town best :D
@@SusieUndertale pre-liberation or post-liberation Seaside town?

My boy looking like Shovel Knight
*The music when you are in overworld: 😡*
*The music when you enter in battle: 😃💃*
Get ready to hear this in HD cause Super Mario RPG is getting a remake
Remake confirmed bois! I can't wait to hear this song in HD.
That feeling of being close to the end...but also not wanting it to be the end...but the combo of the adrenaline and anticipation makes you press ever forward to see what is ahead :D
Looks like shovel knight
He s name is maneger yes.You see he have bros.Director and Clerk. But he s chef is Freaking so much name Chef Factory .
You see, this is his ancestor; Axe Knight
Shovel knight × boba fett
13/8, so fucking technical. So I fucking like it
damn I never noticed that before. No wonder I subconsciously love it so much, I'm a drummer
What does 13/8 mean?
Music is divided into measures in order to keep reading easier. In this case, you count to 13 each measure before starting over you count eighth notes. 4/4 is standard. You count 4 quarter notes then repeat. Try counting the beat in this song. It'll repeat after 13
This track so dark and gloomy. It gives a chaotic feeling too. Very atmospheric track.
this game has some of the most epic music I've ever heard from any game ever
So this is what Shovel Knight was doing before he got his own game
When I enter the factory for the first time and saw what looked like dead bodies, i was thinking, "Could those be dead bodies of those who tried to fight Smithy before?..."

Dats deep bro...
Maybe they come from Smithy's world? Perhaps Exor and Smithy's machines have conquered another places before, maybe even their own homeworld.
Can’t WAIT to hear this again😭
I love the intensity of this piece.
the coolest 13/8 song ever
I hope they keep the heavy synths in the remake
Yep. That’s why I came back to remind myself how it sounds
Is a fucking shovel knight
Dawmit I was gonna say that!
Best thing is, this song is in 13/8 time. Just makes it even better
these drums are fucking insane
Square-Enix knows how to compose the best final dungeon themes.
This time signature slaps
I remember being STUCK here for ages. That clock boss was just straight up unfair and so tedious.
Omg, the more I think about it, the angrier I get that square walked off with rights to Geno and Mallow... fuck, now we're NEVER going to get them in a Mario Kart game.
whoever made the osu beatmap of this song you're the best
Epic theme! Makes you feel like your on the road to head for the final confrontation with the main antangonist! (Which of course you actually were XD)
this was the best mario game ever made
This is a song you mostly hear during most superbosses in Super Mario RPG Armageddon.
Really cant wait to see this area and the music in the remake. This place and fighting Culex

Shovel Knight Lel
Kair That’s not Shovel Knight, it’s The Bud Knight!
Great song, love SMRPG.
This sounds like it should be in Kirby Planet Robobot.
Now known as « the factory »
Have you played Super Paper Mario? That is the darkest Mario game EVER.
Some of the nastiest bosses are in there, such as the clock boss, and the jester duo!
Super Mario RPG Armageddon Main Theme
When I heard this in Mario RPG this music takes my mind to the Caterpillar factory in Ilanoise or to the John Deere factory in Iawa
if you first play the music from true lab from undertale, and then play this one, just think in a good mix with both.
this could have been the final battle theme
This song should play in every factory as people slave away with their work.
truly a B R E A K C O R E moment

I don't really understand Culex though. He doesn't seem very "dark" to me. Just a being hailing from another dimension, that's all.
@Ateykwa It's because the SNES had a sort of charm on it that can't be replicated.
@WeaviletheGreat123 yeah, I actually thought to myself, "if N64 did quasi-2D games, this is what they'd look like".
@uchiha1521 I thought a "company reunion" would be a neat idea, but I think things function a lot differently today, to an extent that may not really happen.

3 people had the factory built on their backs.
@Ateykwa To be fair to Super Mario 64, it was the first 3D Mario game, so you can't expect it to be too pretty.
@Thunderv31 Awwww thank you that's so kind of you to say now I am blushing lol. I'm just getting too emotional today.
best song in the game not even close
The track's title is "Weapons Factory"
Why is there an apostrophe there?
Why did you add it?
In what world does that make sense?
What if someone named Weapons owned it?

@jmario232 I thought i was the only guy who played, beaten and love Mischief Makers, I even created a sequel fic for it
