Good video, Ben! I had been fishing spinning gear for bass/panfish mainly until last year, when we moved lakes to one that's full of toothy fish. When I geared up for musky fishing, I was also doing the switch to baitcaster for the first time. I decided to go with left-handed baitcaster reels so I can cast with my right hand and reel with my left like on a spinning rod. Left-handed reels are available from all the manufacturers, but some (ie Shimano) do a better job of offering different gear ratios than others (Diawa). Just wanted to toss that out there too for any beginners like me. It's a finer point, and like you said, your vid was a basic intro, but it's something to consider.

Honestly totally forgot about Left and Right handed reels. Thanks for mentioning that! Defiantly a piece of important information I left out.

I had a Lexa and the thumb bar would not release from free spool from time to time. Was especially annoying when throwing blades and you want the lure and blades moving as soon as it hits the water. That was 3 years ago, maybe they fixed it? I returned mine and have been using Tranx 400 in high speed and low and they are great. Bought a Beast low speed and it makes big blades a walk in the park, but slow.
Great content I could have used this when I first started

personal opinion, incoming. first rod should either be an 8'6 chaos SWAT or a 9-9'6 chaos shock and awe, or replace the brand with musky shop shields or st croix mojos.
here is the why, the 8'6 xh will always be the best jerk bait rod, and will throw anything but Giant rubber and will handle double 8's and 8/9s. long enough for a great figure 8.
the 9-9'6 xxh as stated in the video is the most useful rod you can own. you will always want at least one in the boat. except maybe your shoulders wont those first few trips of the year!
i stripped the gears on 2 different lexa WN pulling blades, and the repair shop said its a thing with the more affordable lexas. spend the extra 40 bucks for the HD with that brand imo. or get a beast or a tranx. if you want to start affordable, i think an abu C4 is great because of the CLICKER, you will always have a sucker real if you upgrade later.
    great vid dude.

I remember when a 6 foot rod was the only rod and super-braids weren't invented.

Couldn’t imagine fishing without the modern gear we have today! Makes me wonder how much things will change from today’s gear.
