    Uphill switchbacks might seem like a struggle, but making good line choices and gear selection will help you improve. Technique is important too - getting your weight forward and attacking the corners with speed should help to sling you through those bends. If you do a lot of riding up hills, consider your bike setup too - a longer stem to help you get your weight forward certainly helps for the XC guys, and could help you too.

    Glad I've watched this as this is something I definitely struggle with. Looks like my body position is all wrong. I'll try this lot tomorrow! Cheers for the vid guys.

    I managed to mess up a climbing switchback at the weekend. Was just so tired, took the inside line with next to no speed. haha, looked like a right tool. Great vid Mark.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was struggling with very tight steep switchbacks at an enduro track near me, This helped me loads, Keep up the good videos!

    These switchbacks look pretty mild. What about really difficult steep ones, where you have to be right out of the saddle on the pedals? I have some really steep ones on a local trail and can't seem to nail the right technique.

      My thoughts exactly! We have some brutally steep switchbacks here in Toronto. I'd like to see a video on how to deal with those sorts of climbs.

    The most useful bit of this video is the instruction on where to distribute your weight; I many times run into an issue with my front tire popping up as I really pedal hard.
    I have also noticed that when climbing, if I point my toes down (I use Saint platforms) and pull back with my hamstrings on the down-stroke, I can keep a more consistent power output through the rotation which keeps my back end from slipping.
    The last thing I've got problems with is going uphill on really tight switchbacks; my bike is a Trek Fuel EX7 29 (2014) and the best I've been able to figure out is to let my front wheel pop up so I can pivot on the rear tire and drop back down. The problem encountered with this is that the rear may slip, and all of my momentum disappears as soon as that front tire pops up. So I guess it is a manual while pivoting on the tire... seems rather difficult to make a turn.

    he so right about them being fun, makes a big climb interesting kind of like pumping a bowl on a bmx the effort is nothing

    Nowadays we have dropper posts and can't remember a time before them, would be great if someone developed a post that not only went up and done at the flick of switch but also the saddle rails moved forward for climbs and back to normal for descends, what do you guys reckon??

    • @jaytierney
      @jaytierney 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jason Cross I think they would break down even more than regular dropper posts. But good idea in theory.

    • @Kevin-hn5oq
      @Kevin-hn5oq 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Tierney They actually make seats like that look it up

    • @TypeVertigo
      @TypeVertigo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Cross There are seatposts that work like that, but they're made for triathletes. The saddle rails are mounted on a set of arms that can pivot on the head of the seatpost forward and backward. The more rearward position is meant to emulate a typical road bike position; pivot the saddle rails farther forward and you have a triathlon-bike/TT-bike geometry for your saddle. I think Ceepo make these, and they're not like dropper posts where you can flip-flop the saddle rails fore and aft with a push of a button or lever - you have to do it manually with tools. Just FYI on your concept.

    TIP : Apply small pressure on rear break to stop front wheel to lift. Cheers!!!

    • @williamkeys5701
      @williamkeys5701 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ricardo Nunes I don't care much for that tip. If you are going up something that's so steep that the front end wants to lift up you are going to want every bit of power going to the ground. If you're applying brake, you are just sapping power.
      The correct technique is to do as Mark was demonstrating. One thing I would add. Put your forearms parallel with the ground and pull back on the bars. This actually transfers weight to the rear wheel for traction without lifting the front end on steep sections.

      rode Cannock Chase 1st time a couple of days ago. remember there being quite a few switchbacks, not the bit you mention in your comment though. leaning out of the corner a bit more helped me.

    What am I doing wrong if my lower back hurts when climbing?

    • @flappinganimal
      @flappinganimal 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to get this problem with my old bike, it was a touch too small for me. I still get a little pain with my larger frame but it's much better. Strengthening your back with defo help. Also I find regular stretching helps, even whilst riding, I stand up and kind of do a bar hump. This really helps.

      +FusionGFX - Professional GFX for everyone A higher cadence should help you not clenching your back muscles so hard. It would indeed be good to train your core strength.

    • @gmbn

      +FusionGFX - Professional GFX for everyone This is a hard one could be a number of things. here are the things I would check, Saddle height is it correct? Stem to low or to long? A slight weakness in the lower back that could be rectified with core stability exercises? Hope you can figure out the problem. cheers Marc

      Totally, I saw this video and thought it would provide me with some help on how to better approach switchbacks. Instead they show nice gradual turns. I know that I'm new to Mt Biking and missing something, but what I call switch backs seem to offer 2 possibilities: 1) carry enough momentum into the turn that you can lay off the pedaling for a count or two and lean the bike to make the turn, or 2) crash.

    No issues with assembly for me th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
