- AFF Happens, Category C1 with Zach Foreman and Brandon Tomlins. This is the first full release skydive in a student's career. This student had a small drift to his left upon release which was blocked by myself. This student also experienced malfunctioning gear on deployment, the pilot chute was extracted properly by the student and the deployment process was stopped when the deployment bag didn't leave the tray.
Nice job on that instructor giving it a little help. That student eas in good hands, when i started jumping it was 5 static line jumps with a DRCP. After that the freefall was just me and no instructor. I didn't even have an altimeter, i was told to count seconds off then deploy. That being said, i had a freekin blast. Skydiving is is pure freedom. And very safe statistically speaking. I made 166 jumps, which isnt alot, but i would love to do it again. Unfortunately im too heavy atm😢
That's a pilot chute in tow malfunction.. Pilot chute hesitation is when it's stuck in the burble (dead air) since the bridle looked straight didn't seem to hesitate. Good reaction from instructors.
What would happen if the students chutes both failed. Could they hold on to the instructor and be brought down to ground or too heavy?
@@Getsumsimm It is very unlikely that the reserve chute fails if properly deployed. And no, not a chance to be “brought down”.
@@Getsumsimm lol that's not a thing.. If the instuctors were unsuccessful they'd probably try pulling the students reserve, but the also have to fly away and deploy their own parachute in time too. Realistically these are all things students are taught to do for themselves, but since the instructors did their job well the student was probably unaware of the malfunction lol.

It looks as if the instructor knew what was gonna come since he started hitting the container even before the bridle was fully extented. This indicates a known problem with the rig and therefore it is MOST questionable they let the student dive with it in the first place. It's my personal opinion but I'll never ever jump at this DZ
I have to admit, he was a bit quick with pushing it. Maybe he saw something we didn't? Only he knows why he started pushing it.

Hey there,
I was the reserve side instructor that was videoing this jump and would like to clarify.
First, it has become a habit of mine to assist in the extraction of the main parachute immediately on deployment (by giving it a push or "punch") whether it needs it or not, as it is my job to stay with the student or "ride through" the student's deployment to ensure that the main canopy is successfully extracted. So yes, I was absolutely waiting for it so that I could be prepared for if a hesitation happened, which it did.
Second, when 3 people are linked in freefall, it creates quite a large "burble" which inhibits the pilot chute from grabbing the necessary air to create enough force to extract the main as it would if the jumper was solo. This is why it is the job of the "main side" instructor to immediately release the student after the pilot chute is thrown and back away slightly, allowing for more air to pass into the pilot chute for extraction. In this case, the main side instructor chose to stay with us through deployment (unsure if this played into the hesitation or not). Once i saw this, I began giving it a little more effort trying to assist in the deployment, as did the main side instructor.
Third, there is no way that I would ever sacrifice the safety of any of my students to simply get them into the air whether that be gear related or otherwise. On top of that, the dropzone where this jump was conducted monitors the jump numbers of each and every rig to be inspected by the rigger on site after a designated amount of jumps (or if there is a specific issue that is needing to be addressed, such as this hesitation, which was immediately brought to their attention by me following this jump).

@@freerider10 Agree the main side should leave when the pilot chute leaves the student's hand. That's how I do it but I sure see a lot of main sides stick around. Stop it.
How could the rookie have saved this himself? Wondering as a rookie myself. I see the bag was snagged, but what should the guy have done?
Count 5 seconds then check. If there's no opening shock, you go immediately with emergency procedure.

I was told look over your left shoulder. Usually the act of looking over your shoulder should disrupt the burble enough to allow the pilot chute to catch the wind and deploy chute.

Let’s say, main fails to deploy would emergency procedure be to cut main and deploy reserve or just deploy reserve and hope main doesn’t deploy? I’m considering starting aff and trying to understand as much as I can, but kinda getting nervous lol
Some bags if you pull the reserve the main is cut. Some people say fix the malfunction. Some people say cut the main. Some people say don’t cut the main. Some people say it depends.
Most people would say it’s best to ask your instructor

Always cut you dont want 2 parahcutes deployed at the same time, if main for sole reason comes out It could entangle with reserve... Wont happen if you cut just in case

My buddy just did his AFF here and had the same issue with PC hesitation due to stuffed main. Instructor knew it was a problem too. He wasn’t allowed to get video because of this. Idk didn’t like that at all when he told me.

Would it eventually have come out without them punching the bag? It seems he pulled the hackey/cord and almost immediately they punch the bag. The pilot chute had barely been released.
it looks like he didn’t pull on the chute enough. he released the handle too early and that caused the extractor to stay in a depression zone (behind him, where there’s no air). it probably wouldn’t have come without the instructors or it would have come
out pretty late.
that’s why you make sure you release it on your side and far away from your body

Old school my first free fall was supposed to be 3 seconds on my 5th jump it ended up being 10 pulled leveled out and low and behold nothing above me. Old pilot chute on a nice stable back.

What's with all this redocking on release dives. Isn't that "interfering with student learning"? That's a zap when you're taking the AFF-I course, right?
I understand what you're getting at.
Every AFF course is taught a little different, but in mine we re-dock at 7k on a C1 (first release dive with two instructors) to aid in deployment if necessary (unless discussed differently prior to the jump in a real world AFF jump). So it wasn't an "un-sat" in my course since that was how we were trained on it. I also run my C1's the same as I had learned in the course to this day.
On C2 (same dive flow with one instructor) is when we would take care of the "solo pull at correct altitude" portion on the A-license progression card in Category "C." Even though I'll move to the main side of the student without grips just in case there's any issue.
I also do not re-dock on any jump after releasing (whether I'm primary or secondary Instructor) if I feel like I would interfere with the deployment sequence since (as you stated) I wouldn't want to interfere with their learning and/or the safety of the deployment.
