I am usually wary of upgrades in our world filled with useless bells and whistles in forced upgrades that break what used to work perfectly but reaper has consistently just gotten better than perfect each time
OMG to not have to always worry about selecting/ unselecting items and whether they are also in your time selection either selected or unselected finally makes this an editor's DAW. Can't believe I lived to see the day.
I got reaper recently and I think I hate it. Why are things like zoom and scroll so dumb? Barely spin my mouse wheel and I’m now looking at my project from the moon, 10 hours into my 3 minute song, and my regions are so small that they’re not even visible to the naked eye.
@@YeahButStilll Lol I use to feel the same way until I looked up tutorials on mouse scrolling customization. Honestly, reaper is great, but you need a lot of patience with it to get it to work for you. Right now reaper operates similarly to all my favorite daws like Ableton and Logic, but it can even do much more.
At first I was a bit confused, because I couldn't find razor editing anywhere in my Reaper. Didn't realize it came with one of the newer versions of Reaper (v6.24) and hadn't updated yet (was on v6.23). Might be worth pointing out.
Oh man, my full switch to Reaper is getting closer and closer. The Cockos crew keeps constantly improving the workflow of Reaper while Presonus adds new features to Studio One (which I'm stuck right now) which I never need. Thank you very much Kenny, you're a legend! (you've heard that before... :-) )
Kafzilla Good question indeed! Changing DAWs is like driving a new car in a foreign country. Maybe the car is faster and more conveniant but it takes some time to internalize that switches and everything are somewhere else. And the traffic is on the other side. 😜 What holds me back is mainly that it took me almost half a year to "own" S1 completely. Meaning that I am never running against a wall, am aible to fix every bug or problem without a web search and nothing keeps me from making music. This takes time also/especially with Reaper and doesn't come easy esp. now where I am in a constant flow of writing and producing. Btw. I have paid for the license already and have Reaper running already for including watermarks and some video work.
Rob van Hees certainly true! Do you have to switch your buffer block size a lot when recording vs. mixing? Having to type in numbers makes me feel like I'm a programmer and is a bit intimidating in Reaper I think. Also there is no action or shortcut for this (as far as I can see).
@@andreasfranzmann9634 I know what you mean. To follow the car analogy it also sounds like learning how to use a clutch by watching someone else drive the car :) At least you are taking it for test rides! Learning new software can also be very time consuming as you hint. Regarding buffer sizes I think it's fine to just pick any power of 2 (64,128,256 etc) though I haven't tried in-between numbers. My guess to why there isn't an action for it is that it may reset the sound card. For my soundcard there's also a toolbar option for it.
I've seen the discussion on this for about a year and had no idea what they were talking about. Thanks for the clarification. Looks like a real time saver. I'm always using the time selection option in the menus.
So many opportunities to customize Reaper. Just the toolbars and Mouse modifiers alone are amazing. I don't think any other DAW is as flexible and powerful.
Just one point Kenny . Depending on your zoom the razor edits will select only the selection area of the entire block. But when zooming in you can do a freeform or more granular selection.. Took me a while to figure that out
That video is right on time for me ;), I just recieve 6 hours of audiobook for editing process, never done that, I mostly mix & master music. That razor option is perfect for cutting breaths, pause and other brakes in the file on timeline. Thank you !!! All best.
@@comiturhan multiple selections is the main thing. But I wouldn't think someone would select all the breaths and then ripple delete. You'd probably still do it one at a time.
Is there any way to mute within time selection without having to split the track where you want the mute points? I'd like to be able to highlight the area of a track or tracks that I want to mute and then just alt-m those individual pieces of a track down without affecting the areas outside of the time selection.
Hey Kenny great videos! Would you be able to do a video on console routing using the hardware outputs? Or any other proper ways to integrate a console, small or large format? Thanks
Great video, as this solves the 'editing while looping' problem. Quick Tip, I have recently assigned the 'Menu' key (between Alt & Ctrl) to split the item, and it's Sooo quick.
Since I have changed all of my mouse modifiers it would be helpful if you mention what action/modifier was being run when you say "you can hold down Alt on the PC and click here". Thanks for the great videos !
Kenny's videos are always so clearly informative and reliable that I didn't expect to get tripped up with the ctrl+h shortcut for time stretching at 4:10 - it just didn't work for me. Looking at Options->Preferences->Mouse Modifiers, that functionality turns out to be accessible through Alt and Shift+Alt - this conforms to the fact of the Ctrl+h shortcut not appearing anywhere in my default v6.30 Despite having figured that out, it still feels like Kenny's always right and I somehow messed up. Anyone else had similar issues time-stretching razor edits?
seems a bit redundant at first but i guess it might spare me a few shortcuts and toolbar buttons. anyway i love how reaper keeps inovating itself with stuff you wouldn't imagine to be possible
Just me or does Reaper not create a crossfade automatically when you copy/paste a Razor edit region ONTO another track (althogh auto-crossfade is on)? Seems to just create a fade on the existing track parts left and right... Also: The "heal split" function does not work with razor edits?
What is the difference here in slice trim or razor tool I just want 1 slice in my audio event Whats the name in the key commands list I am new in reaper i use normaly cubase and want the same easy key commands but the names for this simple commando's confused me a lott here in reaper
So... how do you actually 'listen' to your razor edit selection? Been watching a ton of tutorials on this topic, and no one ever listens to what they are editing.
Im not sure what you mean by clicking two points if it doesn't involve using the mouse. But when you have made a razor edit selection, you can adjust it at the end and start points. You can also just click somewhere and split using S.
Reaper was the best for me because of the money, the learning curve and now because of the innovations that have been added since. Why should I use anything more expensive?
First...I love Reaper and have not had any negative experiences with it. But just what the hell is this razor crap supposed to be used for? Who needs to chop out bits of several different tracks and move them? For me, just good basic editing would do this. But why would I want to? This is starting to remind me of Corel Painter. They, too, would update with some bizarre feature nobody used.
WHY THE FFFF WOULD YOU EXPLAIN EACH TIME THAT I CAN FING COPY AND PASTE ITEMS, I KNOW HOW COPYING THINGS WORK, JUST WASTING MY TIME INSTEAD OF EXPLAINING HOW THE ACTUAL FEATURE WORKS WTF
