In the story I heard the children are commoners and it's the mother (don't remember if it's the biological mother or step mother) that convinces the father to send them into the forest to die because the family was poor and didn't have enough food. The children hear about this and during the night they gather stones that glow in the dark and while being lead into the forest by the parents they drop the stones to lead them back. The second time the parents locked the door so they couldn't gather more stones and before the parents took them deeper into the forest then last time they gave them some bread so the children tried dropping bread pieces but noticed that birds and animals had eaten the bread. Then they wandered trying to find their way home and stumbled upon the candy house and because they were hungry they started eating of the house. When the witch came out the children didn't know she was a witch and followed her inside. Then she locked Hansel into a cage and forced him to eat to fatten him up before she ate him and forced Gretel to work hard. Hansel tricked the witch with a chicken bone because the witch was old and couldn't see well and wondered why he didn't get fatter. One day the witch decided to eat him anyways and told Gretel to work on the fire and she tricked the witch into getting closer to the fire before she pushed the witch into the fire and freed her brother. They went into the witches basement where they found a fortune which they took home and during that time the mother had died from illness and the father regretted his action and then they lived together. I don't know if the story I heard were the original or a remade from the original because I know the original stories they wrote were brutal compared with many of the adaptations.
