    So lesson learned with these floppies ;) Good job with the cleaning and conservation of the drive!

    Wow, what a rabbit hole but what a great result!

    • @tony359
      @tony359  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      indeed a proper rabbit hole! The frustrating thing is that I went ahead and bought 1MB floppies to avoid "unreliable results" and... oh well, lesson learnt! :) Thank you as usual!

    Holy smokes-moldy floppies! lol I’ve recently purchased a bunch of NOS floppies-still factory sealed. I’m hoping to avoid those crazy issues you had to deal with!
    Great episode-you DID IT!

      I bought a box of brand new IMB and Sony floppies some time ago. All mouldy despite being factory sealed..... I could "revive" them by formatting them 2-3 times in a drive, they would make a horrible "scraping" noise for the first pass, then quieten down and "work" (for how long?). I hope you're luckier than me.
      Thanks! That Mac was a challenge!

    Very interesting discovery with the floppies, first time I have seen that.

      ahahah yes, it did not work so I decided to just live with the spiders and re-use the sprayer for alcohol! :) Thanks for watching!

    Enjoyed watching your troubleshooting process. I recently acquired an SE SuperDrive in excellent condition but will likely need to replace the hard drive.

    That is awesome. This was the first Mac I ever saw and used when I walked into an Alphagraphics print shop in 1989. I was Tech Lead on HDT in the late 90's.

    BTW, these 3.5" drives were known to be unreliable back in the day. Error -72 is a file or device manager checksum error: -72 badDCksum bad data mark checksum

    • @tony359
      @tony359  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understand that correctly, the mould on those floppies would slowly build up on the heads - that is probably why it was so on and off.

    Great video Tony, it sounds like your MiniScribe's stepper is banging past where it should go. Not sure what might be causing this, logic fault? Bad sensor?

    • @tony359
      @tony359  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - I thought about that, it doesn't do that all the time though. It's on and off. I assume the only sensor is that IR sensor where the flat goes. I didn't try cleaning it to be honest. From the only video I have of the issue - the one in this video - it does seem that the logic senses the IR flag as the metal flap stops under the IR but then proceeds to beyond the end of the range. I'm not sure. But I doubt that that is the issue with writing/reading error to be honest.

    • @Epictronics1
      @Epictronics1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tony359 yeah, this is a tough one. Someone mentioned that there is a procedure to reset these drives but I doubt that that is the problem. One guy who worked at MiniScribe back in the day also mentioned that they had issues with the inductors. I guess that might cause intermittent failure?

    • @tony359
      @tony359  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Epictronics1 I'll look into that but I'm afraid it's just a dead drive. When I did a surface scan, it kept finding bad blocks every time I was running it. There is a tiny chance it's an issue with the electronics of course. But I feel it's tiny :)

    Could you please tell us what is the new software version of APD shown at th-cam.com/video/dl6pi7J_ALI/w-d-xo.html ? I have 1.1.3 and I don't have the floppy drive and display patterns items.

    • @tony359
      @tony359  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the floppy and display sections are only available on the full version - you might be using the "emergency disk" as shown at 10:39 maybe? I cannot remember from where I downloaded it but the file I have on my HDD says 1.1.3. Happy to send it to you if you cannot find it, just drop me an email, it's under the "about" section on my channel profile. Thanks for watching!
