It's possible that some insects and other critters (frogs) etc somehow got into the house to escape the smoke from the fires when in normal circumstances they would have been contented with their wilderness habitat. You might see larger wild animals also seeking new homes. It's not very comfortable to go through the aftermath of having a large wildfire come close to your property.
