    Fun fact: the Bajoran they pick to fill Morn's seat is the actor who plays Morn without his normal makeup! Also I'm pretty sure the green brothers are based on the wet bandits in Home Alone.

    Waltz is one of DS9’s best episodes. Marc Alaimo and Avery Brooks are simply outstanding. Dukat is one of the best villains in sci fi history.

    If I recall Latinum can’t be replicated. Its limited quantities and scarcity is therefore what gives it ‘value’ to use as a currency
    It’s pressed into gold (worthless gold. Easily replicated and available in endless quantities) to make it easier to physically deal in.

    Ollie - in the memorial service for Morn, when Quark gestures to a man to keep the seat warm for Morn, guess who sat down there? Mark Allen Shepherd, the actor who plays Morn! He is quoted in Memory-alpha as saying "I had a lot of fun with "Who Mourns for Morn?" Most people wouldn't have known that that was actually me when Quark brings me out of the crowd to sit in Morn's chair. Sure, people that came to conventions know, but the people just laughed, I was told, which I thought was really cool… it was kind of an inside joke!"

    They did Waltz because the writers were concerned that the viewers found Dukat to be sympathetic. He was never meant to be "good" - ever. They just wrote him so well the audience kinda ... liked him. So they said "no - he IS pure evil, he killed 50 million bajorans... he's space hitler, stop thinking he's cool" and Waltz was made.

      Its like they had to compensate for the Episodes from Season 3 to 5 where Dukat was *kinda* on the good-guy side, an antihero of sorts.

      As I indicated I think they over-corrected. Many outright genocidal people in history weren't quite this "screaming to the skies their evil desire" about it. Plus his time ruling over Kira on the station should have done enough to make it clear he's a villain not an antihero.
      I mean sure he's crazy in this episode so that could explain much of why he gets flamboyantly evil, but it still felt wrong to the character to me. Dukat clearly wants Bajorans to admire him, for whatever reason. To just be "They're my enemy, I'll kill them all" just goes against way too much of his character for me.

    I like that Dukat’s relationship with Sisko in the episode mirrors his relationship with Bajor. He portrays himself as a a friend and savior but he’s the one keeping Sisko in his bad situation

    Latinium can't be replicated. That's why it's the currency. The Gold is just .... the "paper" that the "money" is in. Replicators can make gold, silver, diamonds etc - so they're "worthless".
    The latinum is pressed into gold bars - hence Gold-Pressed Latinum :)
    Latinum appears to be an element and since it's not on the periodic table, it must be one of the higher ones - there's an Island of Stability that's hypothesised (chemistry stuff) - Latinum could be the stable higher element which is why it's so rare.

    Waltz was a great examination of how villains perceive themselves. They're not evil. Everything they do is for the benefit of others. Now that Dukat has come face to face with his true self you have no idea what he's willing to do next.

    Who mourns for morn is an example I give for why DS9 is one of the best written shows ever made. No single guest star regular, no character, ever, is left underdeveloped-even the ones that don’t speak like Mourn.
    As a defender of Discovery, I have to admit that that is its biggest flaw. Too many characters are left underdeveloped. DS9 should serve as a model in terms of character development for every show.

    SUCH great performances! Those speeches were phenomenal.
    Who Mourns For Morn is just great fun that becomes more funny on rewatches.
    I kinda want to see the heist they pulled off
    I bet it was crazy. That little bit of Latium Morn gave Quark was ten bricks- or a hundred bars of it!

    We need a prequel series about the adventures of Frank Morn. Latinum is special due to its unique molecular bonds it can't be replicated.

    "Waltz" reminded me of the episode "Duet"
    Both episodes showcased that Star Trek shone with crafty storytelling and not always needing to have massive special effects or space battles (don't get me wrong. I love episodes with huge FX, but episodes where it's dialogue heavy were also gems 💎)

    Morn was trained by the best and always operating behind the scenes. Who invented the red matter used after the hobus supernova? Morn. Who did the commando raids on the heavy water plants in norway in ww2? Morn. Who rescued mussolini when he was overthrown? Otto skorzeny? Hell no - it was morn. Who did you think trained skorzeny?
    Morn: he's everywhere you want to be

    Waltz I find is a critical episode for DS9 it puts the show back on track on why Sisko was chosen to be the Emissary. The show isn't about The Dominion trying to take over the Alpha Quadrant that's just a side story even though it's a major part of the show

    In the Star Trek universe, Latinum is a liquid metal that cannot be produced in a replicator. It's just like Bitcoin. The amount that exists is always the amount that will exist, and it cannot be inflated. That's why it is valuable.

    Colonization is a more grey area depending on if there is an actual colony. With the Cardassians it was a military occupation which is worse. They were holding Bajor purely as a military outpost and base, the only Cardassians were there to maintain order and not to make a life for themselves in a colony. As an enemy occupation the relations were even more oppressive than a colony.

    • @hellfish2309
      @hellfish2309 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      “Supremacist”… the Occupation was based on using Bajoran labor, land, and indigenous resources to feed Cardassian Imperialism… so are Cardassians opening real estate on Bajor? not on scale no; but they still appropriated their homeland and agency based on the premise that the Bajorans are less worthy than Cardassians

    Reason for Latinum is that it can't be replicated, so that makes it valuable, in this future we have replicators, and replicators can easily replicate Gold, therefore there's no value to it since you can just replicate it anytime, but Latinum is not able to be replicated, and thus it's rare, and has value.

  • @ThomasReeves-s7u
    @ThomasReeves-s7u 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Waltz has great dramatic stuff, but I have very mixed feelings about having Dukat go from every day villainy to cartoonish supervillainy. I felt a bit sad to lose him as a complex villain capable of being occasionally helpful while remaining ruthless and bigoted. Also I think I kind of saw him as a more ordinary imperialist. Still it does have great drama as I said and I grant my feeling is likely a minority view.
    Who Mourns for Morn? is kind of silly but fun. Morn is pretty great.

    Dukot is a master manipulator & now he’s truly gone mad so he’s much more dangerous. He’s also a creep, he has a “thing” for Bajorian women. I don’t think he really loved his daughter, he views her as a possession, a trophy. He’s one sick dude.

    • @ThomasReeves-s7u
      @ThomasReeves-s7u 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      He lost his wife and their kids due to her. I think his love for her was genuine or at least it was as much love as he was capable of. Ziyal being so devoted to him I think likely made him feel so good that feeling was at least like love for him. His original family I think was not as grateful or praising of him, certainly not once they learned he had a kid from a Bajoran mistress.

    • @antoinetteserrano3082
      @antoinetteserrano3082 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ he had MULTIPLE Bajorian “mistresses” he took advantage of his position to collect these prisoners & I’m sure he was charismatic & charming because he’s manipulative. As far as losing his Cardassian family, again it was a status thing for him & probably them too so his wife & family were probably embarrassed & sick of his long list of “dalliances”. Ziyal was a bit naive & yes was devoted to him because she always had somewhat of a rosy view of him & it pleased him that she saw him that way. The moment she started thinking for herself, he became controlling & possessive. He doesn’t understand love, only control & he always felt he should be worshipped. Now that he’s lost the plot, these traits become more evident in further episodes. I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t already watched all of the seasons.
