How did they perform? I was an old Army M60 tanker in Germany during the Cold War and always felt that we would have been slaughtered by any Soviet invasion.

This video was shot in Germany (you can easil detect the german road boundary posts (this time not flattened by the tanks ;-) and the german villages). German Army never had M60s but the US Army stationed there.
Thanks to 2/2 ACR of 7th Army Corps i was able to drive this vehicle a few times.

These are some great old memories and I like talking about them here . Nothing like rolling down a road, choking on diesel fumes, dust and 52 TONS on steel under your butt! Interesting 11 yrs I had. I was on M60A1 TANK,M551 Sheridan TANK WANNA-BE, was made out of Aluminum :), M113 APC(Scouts) and ended up in a Air Cavalry Troop on the UH-1 Hueys,OH-58 Scouts and was supported with AH-1 COBRA Helicopters. Enjoyed it ALL too!! This SCOUTS OUT!!"

Sorry, I dont´t think so. Video is made during a Reforger-Manoeuvre in WEST-Germany in mid to late 70´. The Army dont drive Gama Goats in 1988, and the last M60 is gone in 1988, it was the A3 Version. 1982 come´s the first M1 MBT in Germany. The Camouflage pattern in this Video was used by the the 2nd AD " Hell on Wheels" in Bavaria. Hell, love the good old times when Tanks, Trucks+Jeeps drove by my parents house all the time. Love the sound of the M60 Turbo-Diesel and the chain-whizzle...

Problem is the fire suppression system might activate in .14 milliseconds, but the suppressant isn't going to disperse across the turret at mach 5. The fragments of an APFDS round are, as is the jet from a HEAT round. As for ammo storage on the T-72, the ammo is not secure behind blast proof doors but is stored under the feet of the crew, right were a detonation will the most damage...

Not a chance. Western crews were better trained, better supported, and more accurate. The L7 105mm out-ranges the 125mm by several hundred meters, and has better armor penetration. Better sensors and communication just compound those advantages.

Soviet Inferior with thicker armor? The tank has an auto loader and built in monstrous numbers. Even the T-34 won against the mighty Panzers and Tigers of the Reich. Kurst was a proving ground and the largest tank battle in history.
