This charlatan has lost his mind, and will not die before making his deviancy more and more clear. It's a shame because I used to listen to him a lot until 15 years ago. But with utmost respect, his views are simply dubious (although scholars would call it Kufr). He is too consumed with his self and his knowledge, and his own deviant misinterpretations of the Qur'an.
I admire Dilly for holding himself from saying anything that can offend Imran and giving respect to his guest even with all the things he said. This is a sign of true believer.

Nobody in this comment section has said anything of weight to rebel against what Imran has said. All I've seen is loads of people jumping on the bandwagon to make fun of him...and yet their best argument is that "nobody has ever said this before so it's not true."
That is such a weak counter-argument. As someone who is in pursuit of knowledge, I agree with the Sheikh. Instead of taking in and regurgitating what your parents told you, start using your brain and think about what it is you are reading.
These conversations are necessary for people to open their minds and see the possibilities of what is going on in the real world today, and what Allah has prophesied. The pursuit of knowledge is important in Islam and yet nobody really thinks anymore. Perhaps that is why the ummah is in an embarrassingly horrific state these days.
so the great scholars that have come and gone in the last 1400 years were all wrong? and sheikh imran is right? the man said many things that are contradictory to the teaching of all of the scholars of history it would make sense to only take what he is saying with a grain of salt period.
You can’t reinvent the wheel 1400 years after the Prophet taught the religion. The companions and the salaf interpreted all of the issues discussed 1400 years ago and we must follow their interpretation not some random “sheikh” from Trinidad.

I am an Orthodox Christian Arab (Syrian and Palestinian) and I agree with him. His ideas very hard to understand for those who are not in orthodox circles. Orthodox and Muslims have much a lot in common and they should treat each other has close friends. Hosein is absolutely correct when he explains the fall of Constantinople and the occupation over orthodox Christians is ultimately why we are not allies. As we speak, Russia is competing to be the leader of the Orthodox world. The Quran predicted Orthodox is a close friend of islam. These are concepts that are difficult to understand for muslims, but it is the truth.

The Prophet (pbuh) added. “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.”

As a Turk, I find this man incredibly self-righteous and also vindicative. Holding a romanticised view of Putin and Russia/Serbia as well as China is not reflective of critical thinking. On the contrary, he is merely supporting his own foregone conclusions and interpretations in his pursuit of righteous indignation. Unfortunately, his manners also speak for themselves. The fact that he can get so easily offended and defensive is quite alarming. The Ottomans introduced Islam to the Balkans and Caucuses in far more effective ways than he is purporting. His visits to Russia and Serbia as well as Greece are to bad mouth fellow Turkish Muslims. It's an abomination of an entire khilafah that kept the West and Jews out of the Islamic world and an abomination of the scholarship that underpinned the great leaders like Muhammad (Mehmet) Al Fatih. The biggest eye opener for someone who can critically think, is that he conveniently overlooks the Sahabah who tried to conquer Constantinople and whose graves are buried in Istanbul. Muhammad Al Fatih conquering Istanbul was from the Will of Allah and a prophetic destiny. To tarnish that for self righteous persuals is a massive red flag and exactly why he is a fringe scholar. May Allah guide us all and keep us on the right path. May Allah guide this man to the right path and forgive his many shortcomings.

Ok I think you need a perspective of someone born and raised in Russia.. I am a Muslim convert and I live in the West (not that I am proud of it or like it but happened like that) … so I can assure you that there is NOTHING orthodox about Russian government or their belief… the same goes for Russian people. They are as secular as they can be. Most of them are atheists just like in the West and don’t want to hear about God. Their churches all preach idol worship where you have thousands of icons people go to and pray to … they rarely even talk about Jesus as the Messiah, I would say American Christians are way more Christian in that regard. Also, when Russia took over Crimea, that area had thousands of Tatars who are Muslims. They were all expelled or imprisoned. I personally know a lady whose husband is behind bars for 18 years for being a Muslim. So all these ideas are so nonsensical for me, as someone who studied the Quran and the seerah and the ahadith… politically, I still rather stand with Russia, just because their evil is still incomparably less than that of the west but to say they are true Christians or anything like that… it is ridiculous.

The hadith are khabr Ahad, some are correct some are questionable and need to be interpreted or rejected. There is a reason tafaseer have only some ahadith quoted for some things, yet for others there aren't.

Sh. Imran Hosein is a man who use the complete quran unlike the fools who think they know when they only know stories.
One of the things the Ummah has had from day one is ikhtilaf and differences of opinion. Nothing wrong with that at all. No need to get our knickers in a twist about it.
Anyone who pioneers a new field or puts together a groundbreaking piece of research is automatically sticking their neck out and making themselves a target for criticism. That comes with the territory. Because there’s very little in the way of precedent so what is needed is real, deep original intellectual thought. That is too hard, too painstaking, too risky and beyond the calibre of most people hence why the Ummah is in its current malaise and lagging far, far behind the rest of the world.
And a key reason why many who become scholars and imams today adopt a safety-first mindset, and do not dare to even think about veering away from the party line - is the fear of being ostracised and cast out. If the first thing you learn at the Darul Uloom or Madrasa is how everything is perfect the way it is, and nothing can be bettered, are you ever going to even attempt to develop anything original? You just become mere defenders of the Deen, instead of actually adding real value and impact - which is what Islam was always about. What happens if this becomes the overall culture (as it has) is that you stop growing. And if you’re not growing, you’re dying. This is the same holier-than-thou attitude that made the Muslims reject the printing press and steepened the decline from a once-lofty position.
In the world of business and entrepreneurship, you are often disrupting the status quo. You are challenging normal conventions with your own unproven hypothesis and as such, you can often fail and be wrong. But when you’re right, you’re heralded a genius, a pioneer, a leader. Our fiercely capitalist society today champions entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, so naturally Western culture for all of its moral negatives, definitely has the positive byproduct of progress and innovation as a result of this.
The Islamic world however, tragically instead of championing insightful scholarship, chooses to chastise them, label them deviant and throws the baby out with the bathwater. Not everyone is right about everything. Every one has their own expertise - and it is the beauty of our Islamic tradition that we should be open minded and be willing to learn from everyone. Even if the Sheikh is wrong (and he very well might be on some or even many things) - it doesn’t tarnish the rest of the work. We can (and should) still learn from one another. I’ve made it a core principle to never only take opinions from only one scholar or school of thought - holistic understanding is important.
Often, these original thinkers are misunderstood geniuses, ahead of their time and not appreciated until they’ve long gone. That is the price to pay for progress, for actually having the drive, ambition and mission wanting to develop and push the envelope of Islamic thought instead of resting on the laurels of only following what has come before.
Ironically, this is in keeping with the very instruction in the Quran - to keep pondering, thinking, reflecting on the Book - because the Quran has been sent, so it can explain ALL things. And how even if the oceans were ink, nothing would exhaust the words of Allah, in terms of what we can learn from the Book.
Many of the scholars of the Golden age were considered heretics for their views. Yet they changed the world. In more recent times, Allama Iqbal faced intense criticism for some of his radical opinions. Malcolm X had nothing but criticism. Israr Ahmed is another one who has faced huge criticism in his life. But their legacy is not in question. This is not just exclusive to Islam. Tesla died penniless and rejected. Socrates was executed for ‘corrupting the youth’. Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven, Van Gogh. Many of the greatest thinkers, artists, scientists of the past were not accepted by the mainstream until long after their death as their ideas matured and the rest of the world caught up.
The field of Islamic eschatology is forward-looking. And therefore it is practically impossible to get everything right.
What sets Shaykh Imran apart from most is that he is a seasoned scholar not just in Islam but also a scholar of economics and geopolitics. He tends to focus on the macro, the strategic big picture. He is able to connect the dots and see patterns and common threads where most do not. That is the byproduct of being a master in many fields. This is the power of polymathy - and it is no coincidence that Islam was formidable and in our golden age, at a time where polymathy was common. It is because solutions and innovations happen at the intersection of different subjects, cross-industry and by fusing ideas together. Too much of our scholarship today is obsessed with only the micro - the fiqh of x, the sunnah of y etc. I am not belittling the detail but we need balance by studying both ends of the spectrum.
There’s a famous saying - ’there’s a method to the madness.’ It definitely applies here. Not everything is as it seems. What also sets him apart from most others is that he has a very clear and trusted methodology that he follows which allows him to understand and interpret the world through the lens of the Quran. This is the same methodology that has given him deep insights and baseerah into the modern world and has provided an as yet unmatched explanation into the current world and the times we are in. When you have a method, a formula that has served you well for over 60 years, naturally you will be loyal to it. Otherwise it’s not a methodology if you chop and change. If you don’t understand the methodology, and HOW the conclusions have been drawn, then you cannot carte blanche rule anything out. It just means there may be knowledge he is aware of that you yet don’t know. Think about the story of Musa (AS) and Khidr (AS).
The problem sometimes is when we judge, we judge out of context and do not try and understand why and how he has come to that conclusion. Because that kind of process takes time - and we simply don’t have it. So we look at the one statement - and because we’re not familiar with the entire body of work, it sounds loony or even blasphemous. So we put together the mandatory refutation video ‘warning’ the ummah and ‘exposing’ him. But it’s like taking one ayat out of the Quran without the context of the others - you can manipulate it to mean whatever you want. We also have the massive problem of credentialism affecting the Ummah - we reject truth sometimes because of the route it has come from or because of who is saying it.
This is not to say Shaykh Imran is infallible. Of course not - in fact, he is the first to say he might be wrong, and warns his students to never ever accept his opinion without them doing their own due diligence and being convinced of it. He has also corrected himself publicly on numerous occasions on previously held beliefs which he no longer subscribes to. And he might be wrong here on many points.
And of course a caveat is extremely important here - this is not a blanket statement to say all innovative thought is good and that we should allow corrupt ideas to creep in and dilute the deen. Absolutely not. The critical point is to ensure that we remain true to the essence and spirit of the Quran. Sheikh Imran’s methodology has as its fundamental rule that it must not contradict with the Quran as the Quran is the furqan (criterion) under which all else is judged.
One final comment after reading many of the comments is I am disappointed in our adab and ability to disagree with respect. Play the ball, don’t play the man. This is not just some random armchair tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorist talking about illuminati. This is someone who gave up his lucrative career as a diplomat to become an Islamic scholar, travels the world extensively teaching and is also a prolific author of over 20 books. No matter what you believe, that kind of output, service and dedication to the cause commands respect. Many people are commenting on his age and how he is too old now etc. This is ridiculous - did Shaykh Hamza Yusuf stop learning from Sh Murabit al-Hajj because he was now ‘past it’? Subhan’allah.
May Allah give us the insight and intellect to understand the truth and be of the wise, and to maximise our benefit from our scholars while we are blessed to still have them. Ameen.
I actually wrote the above a while ago but feel it's relevant to post again.
I think we need to rationalise things a little, we tend to come to conclusions and judge without any form of nuance or sense of justice or context at all.
First of all, is it really realistic in an hour-long interview, to expect fully formed conclusions to the point where the layman can understand it especially for such a wide range of (deliberately) deep and provocative questions? Would anyone else be expected or even able to do this? Each question could take an hour long to answer with enough depth - and if you're genuinely interested, he has full lectures on each and every one of these topics.
Secondly, there was definitely a missed opportunity here. You have someone who has not only very original, interesting views, but also someone who can offer real Quranic insight on what is happening in Palestine right now. And what it may mean for the future, for all of us. And yet, the whole interview was seemingly designed solely as a 'gotcha' expose - deliberately containing every single contentious point he's made - past or present. Raking up old issues to be discussed again - when there's so many pressing issues affecting the Ummah. When it feels like an ambush, as opposed to an open-minded conversation by someone genuinely interested in such issues, I'm sure it would make anyone annoyed - let alone someone who has tirelessly worked for the deen, been rejected continuously for it and continues to do so. I've actually witnessed him him being very pleasant and expanding on his points patiently even when someone was pressing him even harder on his answers, because the dialogue was authentic. Unfortunately this dialogue wasn’t, it was a ‘let’s put the final nail in his coffin’ type convo, let’s see him dig his own grave. Journalism can be a very dirty game.
I respect Dilly and Mohsen and value the work they do for the Ummah, which is very important, but I genuinely believe this was more than a little disingenuous in its design - and the end product, with all the caveats and disclaimers does leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
I agree, to the untrained eye, some of what is being said, especially if you hear it for the first time, sounds crazy. I myself may not agree with some of it. But it's very dismissive to call anyone crazy - particularly if you haven't put in the work yourself. He never wants you to agree blindly, either do your research and come to your own conclusion... or disagree and follow the majority opinion. No harm, no foul.
Why make a bigger deal of it than is necessary?
We really do lack wisdom as an Ummah, that's for damn sure.
One more thing, context is everything. We do not understand nuance well as an Ummah and we really must learn how to entertain more than one perspective or scenario.
When you have studied thoroughly under someone (or are extremely familiar with their work), you are more aware of the nuances and traits of that individual. You can understand context better. And of course, you’re more likely to jump to their defence if someone else may misinterpret or misunderstand what he is saying. It’s no wonder why those who are most familiar with his work often come across as overzealous fanboys and those who aren’t washed their hands of him many moons ago. We need to find a happy medium. Take the middle path.
The other thing to look at when forming a rounded opinion is the stature of who is saying it and how learned they are. He is not a random guy on the internet of the ilk of Dawah Man or Mufti Abu Layth. He has serious depth and credentials. When someone like that makes a point even if it sounds ludicrous you must have to have enough humility to know that a) he probably knows what he’s doing and b) even if he is incorrect, you are not being forced to take his opinion. So most people should follow b.
Before anything else, at our default state, we as Muslims should have husn-al-dhan. The believer makes 70 excuses for his brother and all that. If he has said something outrageous - the first stance should not be to takfir him back to Trinidad.
He is very old (mid 80’s) and is non stop travelling. Just to apply basic husn al dhan isn’t it reasonable that he was just exhausted and irritable (especially when judging the nature of the questions) and didn’t have the energy to discuss this at length? As he’s getting older, we are seeing a more edgier and more frustrated tone in his lectures. Where is the wisdom from most people - the stuff I am saying is basic logic and empathy, not rocket science.
What makes a scholar worth his salt is not the little technicals. A scholar is supposed to the one that empowers you with the light of knowledge and someone who is fearless in speaking the truth, no matter what the consequences. He does this, par excellence. Whatever your opinion about him, we can definitely not take this away from him.
Whatever your final conclusions, this much is true: we should not take the whole of our Islamic knowledge from just one scholar. If a certain part he has said is incorrect or you can’t accept - then don’t take it. It’s as simple as that. TAKE THE GOOD AND LEAVE THE BAD.
