I recall seeing an interview with Hal, drummer of Wrecking Crew. He said everyone was astounded watching this 23 year old break down each piece to the musician. Hal said none of them had ANY IDEA what the finished song would sound like with the vocals and they were BLOWN AWAY when they first heard the finished song. He was amazed that B Wilson had all of this in his head ALREADY and was able to put it out there for everyone to enjoy. Then during the 70s he played bass guitar and keyboards for the group Bread with David Gates, the lead singer and songwriter of the group. Also, Larry played and toured with the country group The Dixie Chicks.
Nearly 50 years later it still sounds fantastic. From one of the iconic albums in all of rock history and to showcase the Wrecking Crew makes it more special. And now many years later in life I'll sing the words a tad different, "Wouldn't it nice to be younger....." LOL!
Al Jardine said making this record drove him nuts. It took months to finally get Brian's final approval. I recognize the frustration that Al must have had but all these years later I am so grateful.
When I see all of these talented session musicians involved in the recording of this song, I still wonder how the Beach Boys did it live when I saw them in the late 70's. I guess backing recordings were used during live performances back then too.
I love this montage, Brian so incredibly talented fueled by a desire to make the best music he could, inspired by Phil Spector and the vision to realise what the Beatles were doing. Quite frankly he had the full package, studio genius.
I have seen The Beach Boys in various cities, in many configurations of members, over many years and was NEVER disappointed-not once! Brilliant music will always win out.Thank you Boys for the best times of my life!!!
Being a teen in Salt Lake City, Utah meant seeing the Beach Boys at Lagoon amusement park. They would start their tour each year here trying out new sounds and end it on the way home. KNAK AM radio was their home away from home and in fact Bill Hesterman, then the Utah station's program manager became their tour manager and was even on some photos as the 6th Beach Boy. KNAK owner Howard Johnson had a teenage daughter named Shirley, who owned a turquoise and white Thunderbird. Shirley was working after school in the station one day when the subject of "where were you last night" came up between her and her daddy. When Brian Wilson watched the two interact, that's where he came up with the idea of a girl who "has fun, fun, fun until Daddy takes the T-bird away." They wrote the song on the way back the airport that same day. If you have one of the analog recordings of their song "Salt Lake City" before they did a digital scrub on it, at the point when they "and the number one radio station makes the town really swing now..ya" right after "Ya" you can just hear dennis from the drum set yelling "KNAK!"
Great memories! I was a teen there about that time (Murray High - Go Spartans!). Used to listen to KNAK and KCPX (K-PIX), but KNAK was definitely the Beach Boys station. I was acquainted with Gary "Wooly" Waldron and Lynn Lehman. Great guys!
@@mylifentimes at the beginning they're singing without instrumental backing. That's A Capella. Of course they're using harmony. That's what the Beach Boys did.
@@utub1473 that's a literal definition you're quoting. The piece needs to be intended to be performed without instrument. The singers need to emulate the instruments themselves. Here they are merely harmonizing in the beginning. You have to feel the base, middle and treble for it to be a cappella as a separate entity. 2 people can harmonize, but 3 are needed for a capella.
When they released the Pet Sound Anniversary CD box set, I was working as off duty Cop at a brand new Rex Center. At night I had the whole thing to my self as they finished it. I went in the Gym and put on The Beach Boys doing background Vocals to Wouldn’t it Be Nice. It was like being in the studio as they made the song. Each track was incredibly done vocals music and background. Brian Wilson was able to create a songs that would last forever
I imagine the level of excitement listening to the sessions being mixed was amazing! Going into a new realm of pop music and being part of it? I could only imagine the hairs standing up on my arms.
I feel totally blessed to have lived through the sixties with all of the beautiful music in the USA and England. Although I was really a Shadows and Beatles fan The Beach Boys music really was the soundtrack of my life. My all time favorites have to be good vibrations, Darlin and I can hear music.

wow... thanks so much guys. These are - truly MASTERS! to hear it so naked is such a study of the inside mind of Brian, producer - and session players.
The Beach boys released all of their beautiful records but I never thought for one second of all of the work that was involved in making these songs. Oh my teenage years. I was young and Naive then but I would love to relive them over and over again
ive been playing guitar for almost 10 years, im 16 years old now. The Wrecking crews really makes me wanna get better at my reading skills. I can improv but reading (as clearly seen with the wrecking crew) is a great talent to have that many musicians don't have
Hope you've found a teacher that will help you with your reading. It's a very important tool for a skilled musician. Not only to be able to sit down and blow through charts with other players, but a great way to study and exercise through method books. It will make you a three dimensional player.
The Wrecking Crew musicians had a good handle on music theory. Once you understand key signatures and chord progressions, it's a matter of practice and mastering the individual instrument(s) and those guys were beyond that.
I recall seeing an interview with Hal, drummer of Wrecking Crew. He said everyone was astounded watching this 23 year old break down each piece to the musician. Nearly 50 years later it still sounds fantastic. From one of the iconic albums in all of rock history and to showcase the Wrecking Crew makes it more special. And now many years later in life I'll sing the words a tad different, "Wouldn't it nice to be younger....." LOL!
+wkmac2 ... wouldn't it be nice to have good music ...
The Beach Boys bring back soooo many memories of those endless summers😎❤🤗
absolutely beautiful... brian's genius is a feast for the ears!
@thebottle51 ...Joey...thank you...it was an easy one to do, thanks to Brian's brilliant composing...
Sure were. Its called the Music Business. People hear what they see.
My MAN!!! What can I say?? Many thanks for these and I know firsthand the large number of people who really love what you do!! Cheers!!
Silky harmonies. Amazing recording.
Wouldn't it be nice, if we had a national holiday, Beach Boys Day.
The Wrecking Crew was awesome. Brian Wilson is just a musical genius. That's just all you can say. Awesome video...thanks for sharing.
jmp....that's exactly why I created the extended version....so that ALL the production could be appreciated. Glad you liked it.
Great guys!
That A Capella bit at the beginning gives me chills.
It's not a capella, it's harmony. There's a difference
@@mylifentimes at the beginning they're singing without instrumental backing. That's A Capella. Of course they're using harmony. That's what the Beach Boys did.
@@mylifentimes That's just plain incorrect. If there are no instruments to be heard alongside the voices, it's a cappella.
@@mylifentimes Alright, if you'd like to think that.
The beauty makes me cry. Thanks Brian!
So good. Great video. The harmonies on the "seems the more we talk about it" part are just unreal, voices that sound like strings.
Jim...what a wonderful way to put it...I never thought of their voices that way..."voices that sound like strings".......................
Love the Music ! Love the photos! Great Job! Thank you soooo much!!!!!!!
Thanks, Rick!!
Carol and her bass. ❤😍👍😀
I imagine the level of excitement listening to the sessions being mixed was amazing! Going into a new realm of pop music and being part of it? I could only imagine the hairs standing up on my arms.
Love your Motown work. Thanks for bringing another of our favorites.
wow! excellent job extending this classic. the acapella intro was unexpected, and works quite well as a revision.
Thank God for the Wrecking Crew!
@brucini33 ....Bruce....thanks...glad to bring it to you....it's really an amazing song...and Brian Wilson was a genius....
I feel totally blessed to have lived through the sixties with all of the beautiful music in the USA and England. Although I was really a Shadows and Beatles fan The Beach Boys music really was the soundtrack of my life. My all time favorites have to be good vibrations, Darlin and I can hear music.
You started out with my favorite part, the bridge. And, it’s just vocals… just that alone gets a like from me. Love that part all around.
Got all these sessions on the 30th Anniversary boxed set. Fantastic.
I grew up in the Hollywood Hills and went to Valley View elementary school with Don Randi's kids. Hung out at his jazz club, the Baked Potato, more nights than I can remember. These guys were amazing musicians and Brian is a once-in-a-generation genius.
Brian Wilson undeniably a freaking genius! Hal Blaine legendary drummer! 😍🇬🇧❤🇬🇧🇬🇧
Terry....thanks so much!!! Glad you like it!!
wow... thanks so much guys.
One of those musicians was the Great Frank Marroco on according. Barney Kessel on guitar. Hal Blaine on drums. Of course, many others.
Musically Brian Wilson was the REAL DEAL….this recording stands the test of time. Brilliant!
ive been playing guitar for almost 10 years, im 16 years old now.
It will make you a three dimensional player.
some other musicians you could use as inspiration are the Funk Brothers who did all the Motown stuff
or Leon Russell.
Glen Campbell did pretty good for a guy who couldn't read music. Glen had that rare natural talent called perfect pitch.
The Wrecking Crew musicians had a good handle on music theory. Once you understand key signatures and chord progressions, it's a matter of practice and mastering the individual instrument(s) and those guys were beyond that.
Brian Wilson is a genius! Memories 💜
Harribest just did a reaction video about this one. It really does feature the work of The Wrecking Crew.
Excellent work…..as usual. 👍
Great song, thanks for extending. I always thought the original was a minute too short.
WONDERFUL to glimpse Carol Kaye playing a Fender VI bass!
You did an incredible and seamless job putting this together!
What an assemblage of world class talent - sublime music.
Wouldn't it be nice to be there at the session? Brilliance.
One of those songs, for people my age, that is timeless and always meaningful
Had to SHARE to My Class of 1972 Classmates!
