I have a speed queen wringer washer from the 1940s I believe and it still works without a snag never been repaired either and before I got it about a year and a half ago it had not been used for 15 years but before that it was used more than 4 times a week for about 65 years that is insane reliability and I am so happy they brought back their old design

We got our SQ TC5 late last month and it's a dream! We had a GE front loader that was only 2.5 years old ... we had black mold issues in the detergent tray/tunnel within 6 months (even after pulling the tray, emptying access water and letting it air dry). Many of our clothes and all bath towels continually smelled mildewy no matter what temp or how often I washed them, and our bath towels felt like sandpaper. I used bleach on the clean cycle plus let it air dry with the door open - basically everything you're supposed to do with a front loader. The first day we got our TC5 I did 7 loads of laundry - it only took 32 minutes per load! My GE took over an hour per load. I use a natural brand unscented powder with plain white vinegar in the fabric softener cup. Our clothes and towels no longer have the mildew smell, they smell clean and feel softer. I am in love with this washer and SO happy we purchased it, especially with the 10yr warranty going on right now. I debated briefly between this and the similar Maytag but they were about the same price and I wanted to go with the company I felt was more reliable. 10 stars!!!

The key to all front loaders is to always leave the door open when not using the washer.

Hi everyone I have this machine . If you add extra rinse to the spin cycle It will be rinse and spin cycle If you add soap you will have a pre wash cycle once you get used to the no timer stuff This washer is a Awesome. ALSO if you don't want your clothes "beaten up " TR lovers Use the bulky cycle for a full length cycle with lower agitation. The eco cycle is useful for small lightly soiled loads (no fabric softener) It's that simple 😀 enjoy!

    • @mountainkimmie
      @mountainkimmie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's a great tip about the spin cycle for those of us who like to micro-manage our laundry and may want to do a pre-wash. I also use the Eco cycle on my precious 2017 model for times when I want to do an extra rinse that uses slightly less water than my usual method of extra rinse. I don't find Eco setting on my 2017 to be useful for much else as it uses only spray rinse instead of a full tub rinse. I'm a fanatic about thorough rinsing and often run a whole second cycle with no soap after a wash which results in 3 to 5 full rinses depending on whether the extra rinse button is on. But this uses a lot of water which can be an issue in the drought-ridden west, so for at least some water savings I will use a standard wash with no second rinse, and then run the eco wash as a final rinse. I'll add that Eco can be useful for loads which just need a very light refresh with little to no soap, like clean guest sheets or towels that smell musty after sitting in the linen cupboard for a long time. Thanks!

It does a great job washing clothes. Even the Normal/Eco cycle - which uses essentially no hot water - does a terrific job on our every day clothes. Because it will last a very long time (and the recent promotion extends the parts & labor warranty to 10 years - thank you Speed Queen!), the cost is of no concern for it will most likely last longer than any other new machine on the market. I am very happy with this washing machine. Again, thank you for all of your hard work making these most informative videos.

5 years ago, I bought a new $600 Kenmore washer/dryer set from K-Mart for a rental rehab. After they were delivered I saw that the washer's rotary 'manual timer' was actually an electronic switch, and the drivetrain wasn't the heavy-duty shaft-drive of the older Kenmores & Whirlpools. 18 months ago, I wound up selling the rental. But I wonder how this new generation of agitator/top-loaders is holding up.
The '98 GE top-loader in my home was curb rescued in 2006. Woman that junked it claimed it had a defective switch. Only thing I've noticed is when it;s set to the gentle cycle, it likes to switch back & forth from gentle to normal. Since I only use normal, it's not a problem.
I did have the aluminum tub-flange shear off several years ago. Parts, including a new belt, were well under $100.

The price is high because of the warranty. A smart guy who knows maths calculated how much it costs to the compagny to service the machines over their warranty period on average and the initial price is fixed from there. So, as a consumer you got the impression to "save money" but in fact you pay (slightly) too much for a warranty you might (or won't) use.

    Excellent review!
I would definitely agree that the price is high for a machine that has these kind of options. Our 9 series has a LOT more versatility than this washer, and it cost less. They're probably doing this though to try to lean people towards the TR series. Only thing that makes sense to me. According to some other videos, I have seen that a TR cycle time is 50 minutes in the same setting that my 9 series is 33. Pass on that, obviously.
And as many of you already know, washers with no time remaining display get a big No from me. If they are not going to have a mechanical timer, I like to know how far along my machine is and knowing how much time is left. I mean come on, even LG and Samsung managed to get SOMETHING right in that regard. In terms of noise, I don't know. I don't think it is much different than the direct drive I used to use, and that wasn't loud at all. If anything, the machine here is loudest when the water is running, probably because this house has awesome pressure. The spray rinse though is too short. 50 seconds was much better. I know some have said that it looks early, but I think by the time it starts, the force of the tub is already holding the water and detergent PAST the fabric, so the water does actually rinse it provided the machine keeps going, as the drain pump is more powerful than the fill spout. We have washed things with very sudsy water and then have it be CLEAR during rinse, so it is doing the job.
Warranty is okay, I still like the 5 year one on our 9 series. I have heard though that it is still 15 years for the transmission, and lifetime for the tubs, so I can give it that. The lack of more water selections still make no sense to me whatsoever. Everyone always talks about water restrictions, yet this one lacks the settings that would allow you to use less. So again, you can see why I don't fully believe that the TR series was made because of the restrictions, especially when Whirlpool came out with those horrible belt drives about 7 years prior.
In regards to the Maytags. Yes, they do wash, but I do not trust them. I have already heard from several people that the belt drive machine they had before did not go beyond 3-5 years. I have heard some say that they "beefed up" the parts in the Maytag "commercial" washers. Okay, why can't they do that then for the "residential" ones too? And apparently there have been reports of gearbox failures already. Meanwhile, other washers that were used in commercial settings, whether it be direct drives, transmission Speed Queens, and older Maytags had the same parts regardless, and had much better reliability. And I'm sorry, but there is NO reason why the tubs have to hang from the top instead of being supported from the bottom. Yes, I am well aware that the pre-1986 Whirlpool belt drives had hanging suspension, but the quality of that compared to modern ones is not even comparable.
Anyway, great review again. It's a good washer for the time, but definitely lacks some features that would be very beneficial.

My husband and I bought this same washer after ample research, the great reviews (as shown here) and stellar reputation. It was delivered and installed on 12/27/21. On 1/28/22 it stopped working in the middle of wash and we had to manually drain it. We were perplexed. We had not done anything different from the 10,000 other loads of laundry we have done in our lifetime w/o a machine breaking 1/2 way through the wash. We called the retailer and they flat out refused to help. We called SpeedQueen who also refused to help but gave us a list of their 3rd party approved repairmen. A repair man came on 2/4/22 and he look at it for 5 minutes and said - and I damn near quote - "yeah. You did not do anything wrong. You just got a machine that has faulty parts. Sometimes that just happens. I am going to have to replace the whole bottom half." WELL its now 3/3/22 and he claims he submitted the warranty information to SpeedQueen but has been given no updates or ETA's as to when (OR EVEN IF) we are going to receive the parts or when it could possibly be fixed. We paid over 1.5k for this machine all for to wash maybe 15 loads of normal-everyday-household laundry and then die. WTH happened?! We are now just trying to do a chargeback on our credit card for delivery of faulty goods with a refusal from the retailer we paid to help. NO CLUE WHAT IS HAPPENING!

I'm really sorry to hear that happened to you. Now I'm worried. From the day mine was delivered you have to lean on the lid to get it to start. Not all the time but its annoying. Also the lid just grinds when we open it, I should hit it with some WD40.
My 20 year old fridge went kaput during the pandemic, it took almost a YEAR and I had to settle for whatever came into the store warehouse first. The new fridge is a piece of garbage.

I'm so sorry. I hated my old units but wish we would have just kept them. They were 8 yr old Kenmore front loaders and they were garbage from day one - the dryer door would fall off all the time and the lint screen never collected lint so we would have to take it apart every few weeks to clean. The washer was moldy and musty no matter what I did and it would sometimes leave grease looking stains on our clothes. I threw away a lot of clothes.. BUT at least they actually functioned. Jeeze.

@@mizsherm4352 now mine is grinding the way you described. Regardless it still has not been fixed. The repair man has been out 4 or so times. He has replaced 3-4 different parts with no luck. Last time he was here was on 4/8/22. He discovered that the minimum required amount of power to start the motor was not being sent. He doesn't know why but SQ support recommended we replace the harness, board and get a new motor (this will be the 3rd motor they have sent). They tested our outlet and said it wasn't the outlet.. Well here we are on MAY 8, 2022 and the only update they can give me is that the parts they ordered are on back order until further notice. I asked at what point do they just send us a new machine and got no response. So I am going to continue to fight this out but in the meantime I went to Lowes and bought a $575 Amana budget washer. It was delivered and installed yesterday. The SQ was moved to the side. And so far that little Amana has washed 3 loads of laundry - no complaints with that machine yet. Wondering if I should have just bought this budget machine all along. :(

    @mhill854 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Before my lengthy comment, I have two questions; Is the Maytag that you prefer an HE? Also, what is the average life of a Maytag compared to a Speed Queen?
We just had the Speed Queen model TC5000WN installed on March 17, 2020. Our last washing machine was a Kenmore and it lasted quite well, about 12 years. The transmission was failing and leaving the clothes very wet, which in turn were taking a long time (time and money) to dry. The repairman had been out to fix different breakdowns as well. A new transmission and labor would cost half what we paid for the Speed Queen.
I debated and researched, looked around the local stores and was so confused that I finally gave up and went to Lowe's. What I thought I wanted was the biggest tub possible, because we have four dogs and they create a lot of large dirty messes. So, I finally decided on a Maytag. It had a very big tub which I was happy about, and the matching dryer was huge as well. I wasn't happy that it was an HE because my sister had one without a tall agitator and I absolutely hated it. Well, even though the Maytag was HE, it had a deep fill option and I could get one with an agitator, (which I emphatically insisted on) so I ordered the set.
When it was delivered and set up I looked inside and they had brought one without the tall agitator. Sigh...
I could go on and on, but that would be a Lowe's review which I intend to do.
I had to use it until they brought the other one and quickly found out the deep fill option was quite the overstatement. It did not fill the tub, it didn't come close to half-way. On the maximum settings, it left more stains on my clothes than they had when they were dirty. It was an awful experience. Oh, there were plenty of options and cute little noises, however, I wanted to wash dirty clothes and get them clean.
We cancelled the other machine coming and I went back to the store and told them I wanted a non-HE. My sister talked me into a GE but I was not confident in it so I cancelled the order. Then, because I did more research now knowing what was important to look for, I decided a Speed Queen was best. When the Kenmore bit the dust, our appliance repairman said he purchased the Speed Queen and that it was pricey but would last and actually put water in the tub. Now I understood what he was talking about, so we bit the bullet and went with the TC5000WN of which I had read good things. My sister found a set in a different town for a decent price, $949 for the washer and $899 for the dryer. I actually think that I should have gotten a different dryer to save some money and we were able to do dryer repairs if needed. They dryer ended up being a bit small and the clothes came out more twisty than with my old dryer. I also like to wash the screen fairly often and it is going to be a pain in the butt to take this one out to wash it because it is screwed in and is meant to have the lint scooped out which leaves debris behind so I vacuum that out. I liked the Maytag dryer size inside but it had something loose that clothes would catch on and really twist and I hated the lint screen as well because although it could be taken out to wash it, the screen had to opened up to be emptied and I struggled to get the plastic catch open so it took at least twice as long and I ended up irritated. It also let debris fall into the opening that the screen went in and stuff caught in the place where the screen frame met the metal of the dryer.
Back to the washing machine. The TC5000WN doesn't have an option for a cold water rinse attached to any of the settings.
We usually use the warm setting, because that is what we used on the Kenmore, but there was always a cold rinse. After experimenting with the water valves and adjusting the amount of hot water going in the tub, the clothes came out warm after the spin instead of very warm/somewhat hot. I am very happy with the cleaning action of the TC5000WN. No worries of the clothes coming out in worse shape than they went in.
I appreciate your reviews and comparisons.

M Hill sorry u had so many problems finding the right machine , which is y i spend so much time reading reviews. I thought the Sq specs said all rinses are cold, maybe mistaken. Was thinking of this model since i hate he machines and like that i can get straight hot water, although may be too hot. Can i adjust the temp of hot water? Dont need it to be as hot as my water heater is set at. I use hot water often and i certainly don't need a higher utility bill by using warm for the rinse cycle!
Once u played with the water valves, was warm the coolest u could get it, while still having a decent temp for the hot loads?

i just found 1 simple trick to having this speed queen washer fill the tub all the way to the very top.
    1. just simply wait until the tub is done deep filling the tub.
    2. then let it start a wash cycle and then
    3. afterwards cancel the current cycle completely by holding start for 10 seconds.
    4. then start a new cycle again by pressing the start button and then the washer will fill up with a little more water into the tub for maximum tub fill!!
this is also handy for extending the current wash cycle times by reseting it. in case you wanna do a 24 minute wash cycle

I don't really care for the machines offered in my area as I'm pretty stuck on getting a machine with an agitator and most new machines don't have agitators. I need something that can take care of soiled clothes from construction and warehouse work, gym smells and we also have dogs. I am also looking for something that will last me awhile. Research this issue, the company knows about it and gives you an adapter for the end of the hose to help keep the suds at bay. They will tell you when you call to use vinegar in the fabric softener area and a tablespoon of laundry detergent. I was ok changing out the t shirt I have wrapped around the standpipe every 4th wash or so, but the other day the end piece they give you fell out and created a big flood in my laundry room. A plumper had to be called and a bill of $240.00 was paid. My flooring got ruined and my drywall had to be cut away. I am sick about this purchase and wish I had never bought it. It is my third and last Speed Queen. The pump seems to keep pumping in the spin cycle creating the bubbles. It does not disengage like it does on the other model. Wish they would fix the issue as it does wash nicely. Just warning those interested, boy do I wish these threads I see about this topic were around last August when I was researching which machine to buy.

If you're at all concerned about reliability and repair costs, stay away from new washers... buy a good reconditioned one from the classic years. Vastly better built and washes much more effectively even if they use more water. I don't live in the desert. I live on the great lakes with rising water levels.

Ive been bingewatching washer videos. So glad I saw your 2018 SQ top loader videos. I was THIS close to paying 1800 for the w/d. PLEASE! can you give me a good recommendation for a w/d? I really don't need heavy duty, I just want it to work good and not break haha. Willing to PAY but would rather pay less obvi.! What is a good overall one you would suggest? BTW, I want the most BASIC of BASIC top loaders, and seeing your reviews, I figure if it has the agitator and barrel going opposite ways, that's the best right?

You might as well spend the four figures on the Speed Queen, because anything cheaper is not going to last nearly as long. You can buy a cheap Samsung for $600.00, and you will end up replacing that in less than 10 years, while the Speed Queen is designed to last more than 20. The Speed Queen is also repairable, while the Samsung is disposable.

    Hi Eugene,
Now I’m wondering if the normal echo cycle with the heavy soil option (over 59 min) is more powerful than the Heavy Duty cycle? In another video you mentioned not to use the normal eco-cycle if you wanted your clothes clean. But when you pick the heavy soil option it seems to change all that. Have you ran a test with the normal echo cycle with the heavy soil option?

I would agree on the price. Why so much money for tried and true technology that should actually be cheaper to own. The only infraction with this washer is control over load sizes. I feel this at best is a still a censored version of old. I get it as you know that I know why but dang. It’s just to much money for less control over water levels.Just a deal breaker for me! with right combinations of detergents etc etc my TR series machine has passed the test after two years and I’ll just stick to that!
