Just in case you didn't know...The Addams Family was originally a series of cartoons appearing in The New Yorker magazine beginning in the late 1930's, drawn by cartoonist Charles Addams. It was made into a TV show in 1960's (starring John Astin, Sean's father) and I think there was a cartoon in the 1970's. Then came the two 1990's movies The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.

Anyone who has time and likes the movies should try to sample the old TV show and look up some of the very old cartoons. The three iterations are so different, yet also so essentially consistent in look, feel, and tone ... it's kind of amazing.

Tried to find my own copy a while back but it's long out of print.
There is a theory that the Addams family was/is cursed that they cannot die by each other’s hand. That’s the reason why the parents don’t react negatively to the children’s antics.

The whole “Gordon is Fester” thing was originally meant to be ambiguous for the ending, just keeping the vibes of “not biological but definitely family”. But the actors of the family loved Christopher Lloyd being Fester that they insisted on having him really being an amnesiac Fester. The Mamushka scene is the biggest hint of that because there had been no rehearsal prior to the party, it was all muscle memory. Finally, they explain it right at the end that he was found with amnesia, but thank god for the lightning bolt that helped jog his memory. Even so, if he had remained as Gordon rather than Fester, because he got along well with the family, especially the kids, he would have been more than welcome. It’s only those who intentionally try to drive them apart who are on their eternal blacklist.
I do think that Gordon is meant to really be Fester, but part of the message of the movie is that it doesn't really matter. He's part of the family either way.
Yes, you should definitely watch the sequel. Most people agree that the sequel is better and Wednesday has a much bigger part. Some might even argue she has the lead female role.
Fun fact: originally he wasn't actually going to end up being Fester but the cast hated the idea and expressed that through the actress for Wednesday Christina Ricci and they made it where he was the real Fester
Director Barry Sonnenfeld was the director of photography on several films, including a few early Coen brothers films. He's got a great visual style. He also directed the Men in Black movies.

Gomez is indeed Spanish, even the actor who plays him (Raul Julia) is Puerto Rican. I think he just spoke Italian in that one scene because he either knew some Italian or the director/writers (either one) wanted it that way

Check out some of the old 1960s tv episodes on TH-cam. There really fun. Similar vibe, not as dark, but oddly revolutionary for American TV. The first TV couple that had anything resembling a sexual relationship (tv was very prudish in those days).

I LOVE how Fester turns out to be... ACTUALLY FESTER!!! The whole movie they're trying to make it ambiguous if he is or not, and even Gomez at one point has this rant about "HE'S NOT MY BROTHER!!"... But the Mamushka is what really meant he was ACTUALLY FESTER!!!! There's NO WAY someone is going to RANDOMLY PRACTICE the Mamushka to the degree that Fester had...
After the comic book the 1st TV was the black-and-white TV show. You also have animated TV shows both Before & After the movies in the nineties. Of the 2 animated TV shows one was closer to the black-and-white. The other was just after the nineties movies

There are 2 seasons worth, but sadly they were only very short videos - at most about 5 mins each or so . . . Melissa Hunter was both writing the stories, I think, as well as playing Wednesday, until the Addams Family (copyright holders) made her stop doing them as they were becoming too popular. I didn't hear much of her after that, until I recently saw that she was one of the producers of "She Hulk, Attorney At Law" . . . Have a look at them and enjoy, as they were good, and she played her well . . . !!!

I grew up with the original TV show. I was so skeptical when this movie came out. But it was nearly perfect. Only reason I don't say perfect is a.) the plot is kind of all over the place, and b.) the sequel (as you already know) is better. The casting of Raoul Julia, Anjelica Houston, and Christina Ricci is PERFECT. They steal the show. One of the few things I regret in life is not taking the opportunity to see Raoul Julia as Don Quixote on stage. I had the chance but missed it before he passed. I did see the legendary performances of Zero Mostel as Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof (at the Hollywood Bowl I thing as a kid) and seeing, late in his life, Anthony Quinn as Zorba the Greek. He was already old but he still could pick up the table with his teeth. If I had seen Julia as Don Quixote I would consider it a trifecta of perfect casting in live performances.
this was a year ago, so I can only assume you were as scarred as I by 'Wednesday''s Gomez. the ONE representation that did NOT portray him as we all know him is what they used for inspiration. Thank the High Ones that was the only mistake they made.
that you can question Fester being genuine must mean you put way too much faith in the 'mother''s story. she was telling them lies. proof is in how easily he fit into the family. Nevermind the Babushka.
This is a brilliant movie. The sequel is even better! Its rare for a sequel to surpass the original but "Addams Family Values" is literally 100 x better! This movie pushed the line, and after they realised that all the twisted jokes landed, they double down for the sequel! 😂😂😂😂
Wednesday the series is absolutely trash. Terribly casted. It would be bad to hate this film but like the series because it will show you nothing bout the how a addams members characteristics. They'll alway find a way to ruin classics. The Animated is more addams family vibes than the series. But hey good luck watching that trash lol

This was the first movie, but before this there was a TV show and a bunch of cartoons. They're all based loosely on a old comic strip.
The second movie from 1993 is even better and has more Harmony in it (and strangely a side character called Buffy as well )
