When Kendrick said 'Be humble, b**** sit down” he’s not just talking to women. He’s calling out a lot of people-his peers in the music industry, people in power, maybe even himself-basically telling them to stay grounded no matter how successful they get.
if this is anyone's first introduction to kendrick i feel like it's a very first weird listen. the lyrics are very intentional especially when put into context of the album DAMN.
I'd love to see your reaction to a song like "Wesley's Theory" by Kendrick Lamar. I mean, he has so many great tracks. Humble was a hit, but it isn't even in my top 25 Kendrick tracks. "United in Grief" would be another interesting one. "U" would be one of the most interesting from a vocal perspective, since he conveys so much. "Maad City" and "Fear" are up there too for that. "Mother I Sober" is featuring Beth Gibbons, who is of course amazing, and I think vocally Kendrick matches her vulnerability, and lyrically takes it to another level. Humble is fine but if I had one track to show someone how unbelievable of an artist Kendrick is, this would be one of my last picks.
Kendrick is part of what got me started to really deep dive back into rap. Lots of crazy stuff out there, old and new. Love to see you react to Run the Jewels.

I’d love to watch you react to Sing about me, I’m dying of thirst! Especially the latter part. To me, that’s his best writing, and possibly the greatest lyrics produced in rap to this day.

I’m a metalhead at heart and of an age where I witnessed the “birth” of Rap/Hip-Hop as a popular genre with bands like NWA and Run DMC. At the time I couldn’t stand it, and would still generally say I am not a fan. There are some good songs but as a whole I can leave most of it. Having said that I took my son to see Kendrick a couple of years ago because he loves rap and wanted to go. I started listening to him so I wouldn’t be going in blind and I was impressed with a lot of his work. The show itself was phenomenal, and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some great live bands. He came out and was alone on stage for most of the set. His energy was amazing, you could tell he enjoyed doing what he was doing, and he was as clear lyrically live as he is on the studio version. The crowd had an energy that I have only ever truly felt at Iron Maiden or Sabaton shows. It was a truly wonderful experience. I am still not a fan of most of what my son listens to, but some of it, like Kendrick, is very good.
Yeah, it really sucks that rap today is nearly popularized by mumble and bland lyricism. Kendrick Lamar really is one of the greatest to ever put pen to paper, even in some of his more trap songs. Idk if you are familiar with him, but Kanye West's old music is also very good and I would recommend it (preferably The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).
I'm a huge rap fan but 90% of live performances are just bad because its hard to rap and at the same time elevate your voice to reach an entire arena or wherever the show is. Very few can do that and Kendrick is one of the best at it
4:49 that's why he is called an MC and not a commercial rapper doing it for the cash oy like some modern rappers, he speaks on topics of their community and culture through music and that's who an MC is
I always felt like this song is more of Kendrick announcing his takeover of hip-hop as the new self-declared King. Great breakdown of all the things that make Kendrick's voice and style stand-out from the pack.

Highly recommend checking out Aesop Rock's "None Shall Pass" if you're wanting to look into a really lyrical hip hop artist. Kenny is the GOAT, but he's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to modern hip hop.
It’s a really good song. A little… his music has more in common with like RJD2 musically. Almost Blockhead. But it’s all from the brilliance of the lyrics and rhyme that he is hip hop. The appreciation for that.
I like Kendrick, he really has some good stuff, but never understood how this track was so popular, definitely not his best in my opinion. He (or his label) seems to be pandering to what he thinks the public wants from its rap artists in a bid to sell records. It's got an average, monotonous flow and lyrics a schoolboy could have written. But hey, everyone has different tastes and I'm not going to diss anyone who like this.
Well, this song was actually made on the entire basis of "Kendrick can't produce a good trap song". He took that with a chip on his shoulder and made one of the most streamed songs ever. While this isn't even close to his best work, it is something that is catchy and so foreign to his previous music that media outlets ate it up. I personally prefer DNA. as a trap song over HUMBLE.. DNA. had great flow, lyricism, and a very impactful message to a certain set of reporters who discredited him.

When he posts a song he gets over a million views in one day. You will be able to hear every word he raps or sings A good place to start would be "Dear Rappers"... Tom is low-tier rapper and he doesn't even come close to Kendrick's level. If anything, she should check out artists like Danny Brown, Aesop Rock, ASAP ROCKY, RTJ and J. Cole.
I'm a boomer so by and large I neither like nor understand the obsession with rap...this has not moved my needle one bit...however...watching Beth's reaction (or lack thereof) was priceless and made my time listening to this crap worth it. 😱🤣
