  • Here's my look at the Scott CR1 2017 road bike we've hired from Pro Cyclery, Las Vegas. We filmed this during our Red Rock Canyon loop today on the bike (we rode out from downtown and back).

    Why are the brakes reversed in some countries? Well, it all depends on which side of the road that people drive on and old fashioned hand signals.
    A long time ago, cars didn't have turn indicators, so the driver would stick out their arm and signal their intentions. This carried over to bicycles. It was believed that it was safer for a cyclist to use the back brake when only one hand was available (the other hand being used to signal).
    So in countries that the driver is on the left hand side of the car (such as the US), the back brake will be on the right, and in countries where the driver is on the right hand side of the car (such as Australia and the UK), the back brake will be on the left.

    It's a hire bike, I'm not so sure why a larger range of gears would be so confusing! There's likely to be a high variety in the level of fitness between the number of people using a hire bike. Also having 'too much range' can never be a bad thing, click down a gear if that big old 32 is intimidating you!

    I purchased this CR1 and my opinion it's a great bike for me at the moment, live the way it rides and how it handles turns and up hill no problem at all. I give this bike on my terms a 10.

    Your comment about the Ultra Sport tyres is on point. I got a pair based on cost & colour & found them awesome. Recently I have found my wheels slipping out from under me. To use the F1 terminology they defiantly 'fall off the cliff'.
    It would be good to hear your opinion on tyres as no one deals with these topics & us noobs waste our time, money & skin trying to find good grip. Your 'feel' based reviews would defo suit this.
    Thanks again for all your great content. You got me into smart trainers & Zwift 👍🏼
    Apologies for the long comment

    The brakes are reversed so your rear brake is on the kerb side so you can brake with the back brake and signal a left turn across the oncoming traffic

    34/32 could be to make any heavier riders happy. 34/32 allows me to spin up moderate inclines and limits how hard I have to grind that low cadence up very steep. Even my petite wife is thinking about switching to compact 11-32 just because she loves to climb. Still got plenty of options for flat rides. But more flexibility if you want to climb.

    I go to Vegas every year. It's hillier than it looks. Constantly rollers. My favorite back up wheel set were shimano rs10, and those look identical with low spoke count front 16(fast front wheel), and a dished rear wheel with offset spoke holes on rim to improve stiffness. They aren't light but somehow they pull it off and they feel plenty fast

    I ride a Cr1, it's a great frameset, it used to be a premium range for Scott, but with the new Solace they pushed this series to the lower end. Great climbing bike, Stuart O'Grady used this frame for Paris Roubaix.

    50/34 and 32 cassette is the perfect gearing for all kind of riding. Who needs a 53-11?!?! nobody in the amateur world of cycling.
    Did a trans alp tour last year and with all the bags an stuff on the bike, the 34/32 was used a lot on the gavia and stelvio

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Northvegan Cycling Fair call for that application, but not this bike. And with these downhills, tailwinds, and big open roads - everyone needs a 53/11! :)

      53/39 and 32 cassette is my favourite. 39/32 is only slightly taller than a 34/28.

    Descending LH side of road, leaning into a LH turns which will be tighter (inside of hairpin), your inside hand (left) will be dominant => you want it on rear brake.
    Vice versa for RH side of road descents

    Nice bike!
    The brakes and crank are actually sub-105 non-series shimano bits. 11spd 105 cranks and brake calipers greatly resemble ulteg/dura what with the 4 arm crank and complex looking caliper mechanism.
    Not that i'd be complaining, although they shouldn't really call that being fitted with ultegra...

    Nice Dutch themed cycling shorts Shane ;). Interesting to hear that you have the front brake on the right. I used to have that on my city bike, but not on my road bike. 8 years on, sometimes I still get confused, though on instinct I seem to brake right

      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were free ones from Von who did a week tour/guide thing at the Tour Down Under. I'm not sure the company who made them knew they were national colours/stripes. They're really nice (and free) knicks though.

  • @drouleau

    In the southwest, that kind of gearing is pretty normal wherever there's mountains around and for people who actually ride in and up them (unless they're a toothpick with a freakishly high FTP) - I'm in SoCal, and one of the first things I did when I moved here was go to an 11-32 in the rear and stick the 34T back on in place of the 36T. I'm doing L'Etape California the end of April - 75 miles with 11,000 feet of climbing. The final climb is 4.7 miles with an average gradient of 8.6%, and I'll probably be wishing I had a 36T in the rear. But anyway, the "Fred" gearing is kind of popular around these parts.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure for other parts, but I'm yet to find a hill around Vegas that warrants it to be honest. I assume this is simply the gearing the bikes come with vs what they've specifically chosen for the area. The 50/11 was way too small coming back in from Red Rock today with a tail wind.

    • @drouleau
      @drouleau 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the problem is if they can't swap out the cassette and crank for a particular rider for some reason (which would make sense to do), they would have to go with the average. I haven't ridden in the Vegas area - only driven through there a few times - but I'm surprised that more roads don't go up into the mountains around there? If you could drive 4 1/2 hours west, there are plenty of routes around here that'll more than warrant that gearing :).

    rented a giant TCR with 105 throughout but the same brake calipers as the Scott. idk if it's the 105 lever or the caliper but brake feel was absolutely crap. I think I locked the rear riding to the hotel from the shop atleast 3 times coming to lights just cuz I had no idea where I was in terms of braking force. tcr was great in a medium and I usually ride a 54 anyway. how tall are you Shane? I thought you'd be on a 56 atleast. think mine was 75 a day for two days which wasn't to bad given I was in la. that was without a bag or anything as I also bring my own filled with crap! funny enough that you mentioned customers over tightening. when they removed the post to regrease it before adjustment the found it had been cracked! clearly some bloke decided to adjust it and over tightened the clamp! perks of being a mechanic is eventually your arm becomes a pseudo torque wrench and you learn what's good and when to stop tightening.

    The silly phone syncing bug with Garmin Connect is a pain in the ass, and they haven't been able to fix that bug in years now apparently. Are the Wahoo devices literally as good across the board as the Garmin devices in your opinion?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Garmin Connect has been pretty solid.... opening the Garmin app and doing a manual sync force has always solved any missing ride sync for me. Wahoo syncing has always worked for me although I haven't used it as much as any Garmin sync.

    • @batbawls
      @batbawls 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My 520 routinely fails to sync, and sometimes it will resolve itself if I disable bluetooth and restart both devices (or some other combination of that and some woo woo), but other times it just fails to sync until the next ride.

      Yeah, the 2017 is radically different from pre 2010 CR1. Mine is a 2011 and it didn't look too much different from that '17, but I imagine it has moved on a quite a bit. I'm stepping up the training this year, so I wear the CR1 a bit more and justify a more modern machine in the nx couple of years. These bike manufactures are buggers pushing it forward - $$$$$$$
