I've been to Williston and it's not half as wild as the media likes to say. Even with the oil boom, it's still just a sleepy little town. It's a little more lively than the rest of North Dakota, but so are most corpses.

@@melindayates3775 The problem lies with the main fact is that all of your companies or corporations are unregulated. They knew the harshness of North Dakota and yet they gave no warnings and provided no provisions for the winters.

I worked 3 winters in N.D. oil fields . One of the best times of my life . I meet some of the best people in the world . Went to the A.O . G. church in Watford City . Went to some kind of Christian fellowship four time a week . Even had a healing in my body at the A.O. G church .

I grew up in an oil boom town in Oklahoma. It was crazy. You never seen so many trailer houses. The town went from 7000 people to 15000 in 2 years. Home building was going like crazy.

I am a female. I’ve lived in Williston for 19 years. I have worked in and managed front line oilfield companies all 19. A lot of this is blown out of proportion. There was only a couple of crazy years, (not scary) and even all of that media coverage was blown out of proportion. There have been several booms here over the decades. Not just the ones covered in these little clips. Only 2013 and 2014 were weird for the most part. People were coming here in droves… In car loads… most of them didn’t make it here because they didn’t have the work ethic at the end of the day. But yes, a wide swath of “types” showed up and they brought drugs, darkness and trouble. It was largely temporary. You have to be tough to live and work here. So those same people made their way back to their home states eventually. The American dream is absolutely here. But no need to worry about this town anymore. Nobody wants to work anymore (anywhere) and that’s no joke.

I felt for James and he had the right attitude. The last guy who hasn't seen his family in a year, broke my heart as he had his dog with him. God bless the Pastor out to help people. People think it's so rough but they forget this land was forged with people in wagons and living in mud houses. They survived and were grateful to have food, shelter and a life without freedom. Maybe the other people in videos who are complaining should consider how it was over 100 years ago.

A friend of mine left a desk job in Denver to go up to Williston and make his fortune. He slept in his van for 4 days. Was -30 at night. He almost died. Wound up coming back to Denver and got his old job back. Said it was like the wild west up there folks. Drugs, hookers, booze...and crime was rampant. DO NOT head up thinking there is money flowing in the streets. If you can roughneck or drive a truck you got a chance. Otherwise DO not head up there thinking you'll get rich quick. It's F-ing cold in ND people. No where to live and if you don't have an "In" or already have a job when you get there....save yourself the trip

I remember when the country was in financial trouble and what move the country to the positive was North Dakota. People were working up there (me included) and sending money back to the rest of the country. I wasn't crazy about Williston. I liked Tioga, Stanley, Newtown, Dickinson, Bismarck, Watford City more. But I admired the people that had a drive, focus, and goal to get good stuff done. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT ON GOVERNMENT/WELFARE. Cutting this short; plenty of people know to avoid the ones that are up to no good. I agree with most of the comments in this post; North Dakota is an hidden gem in this country.

In America you have what you call "Human Resources" Departments that treats you as an EXPENDABLE RESOURCE just like what the Tech Boom in your California treated all new employees as TEMPS and classified all jobs as Temp jobs.
Before the term "Human Resource" you once had a "Personal Department" that treats you like a decent human being.
Before the term TEMPS you have "lower level development jobs" (which are jobs that also teaches you additional education and skills and gain more experiences).
Before the term Temp jobs you have what you call as "level entry jobs" (to help you climb the economic ladder by teaching and upgrading your work skills so that they can enable you to climb the economic ladder) that creates economic upward mobility.
Before you become offended, I must warn you I am a very frank person, the truth must be said no matter how painful it is. The truth is this question: What happen to your humanity that allows and makes you treat people as a person with neutral decency (just be neutral but be decent to anyone and to anybody)? What happen? Just asking.

Unless you are starving, under threat of your life or sick, you shouldn't move to a place where you have no roots. We cannot undo the past but we can start developing regional pride for ourselves for today. Moving to a place you're not from simply to get more money is not cool, and that includes people in the past too.

You know what.....people love to complain about everything. I'm from an area where there is 11% unemployment, people begging for jobs, high crime rates and you go to a place like ND where there is a boom, people get what they want and still complain. These problems posted here are everywhere but they are FAR worse in areas that have higher unemployment. We can only do our best to curb crime, drug use and other problems that come with society. If it's too much for you, I invite you to Hanford, CA where the jobs are none and air pollution is the worst in the country. Otherwise suck it the f*ck up.

This is pretty much wilson county texas, it's insane what a little oil and money will do to a community that doesn't need the oil boom, 3 years ago it boomed and maybe a year into it tanked and alot of people got laid off who were making all this money and spending it too, and now the money is gone and typically oil fields hire criminals, so what happens when the criminals lose that big figure income, they turn to crime to make the money they want. I have watched my hometown turn into a meth town in just 4 years, thats all it took, was 4 goddamn years and they're dug in. We are seeing what happens when criminals dig into a nice area and they ruin it.

Some don't move on as quick when they sense you are not interested because they're aren't as many women for them to move on to. The bartender and security seem to be very anti-creeper though. I definitely feel just as safe in Walmart or walking around town, those young girls have been unnecessarily scared.

I didn't see any of that. I spent time at the Williston Community Center working out. Most of the guys in the bathroom were oil rig workers taking a shower. I would go there to work out and shower after driving a Vac Truck for Deer Valley Trucking. No prostitutes approached the truck like happens in Fresno. Walmart parking lot is pretty entertaining with people living there in their campers. Locals are selling you everything needed for the Oil and Gas industry. Mostly just live in the truck and haul the crude or frakking water or the back flow. It is good hard work but I did not make any more than driving a Car Hauler or a Crude Tanker anywhere else really. Just ass freezing cold in the winter. Follow the local recommendations of having a candle and cold weather survival gear with you in the truck or your car/pickup. I have fished the head waters of the Missouri River and the Pheasant hunting is legendary. Nice place really. One Rule You Always Follow; "DO NOT SMOKE ON THE RIG!" That is how the #13 Oil Rig exploded and killed 8 guys plus all the other injury's. Wear your Hydrogen Sulfide detector when you are on the Rig or you will probably die. And the FRC is worthless in an oil rig fire.
