2014 KIA Cadenza First Drive Review

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ). The 2014 KIA Cadenza is new near luxury sedan that could have been built in German a few years ago. It is no secret that KIA head designer, Peter Schreyer, used to design Audi's. You can't help but see the connection in any new KIA model. But perhaps the new 2014 KIA Cadenza is the best example of Schreyer's influence on the Korean brand. The new 2014 KIA Cadenza looks like it could have been designed in Germany...and that's because it was. While Schreyer may design KIAs he still works out of Germany given his cars a very Germanic flavor. In this first drive video review, Nathan goes to San Diego to test and review the news KIA. Is the KIA a Korean Audi?
You'll have to watch the review below to find out.

Agreed! While shopping this car against its competitors, that's all I heard, Driving all the others felt as if I was downgrading myself. This car impresses me daily.
    (Im coming out of a 2012 MB GL450, 2009 BMW 750Li and 2009 Mercedes E350)
I may NEVER go German again!

I agree! When I think of Kia today, I can't help but think about the pre-2010 Kia's. All were nightmares. Remember the Kia Spectra!!! lol So they need to rebrand to signify their advancement and improvements they have made since then.

I am in the same boat, same choice, can't decide.
Impala, all the features plus a huge trunk, they need to redo their logo, its extremely old fashioned.
Kia Cadenza, how will it perform in two years from now do they have a reputation of reliability or some track record?

your right. and if your statement applied to the Hyundai Equus, you would be 100% right. But when i mention Lexus, I was getting at the common, "why would I spend $40k for a kia" misconception. Just like when mercedes and BMW heard that toyota was building a luxury car in the 80's, they didn't take it seriously and later was caught off guard. What I'm saying is, don't disregard this car because it a Kia, actually look at this car for what it is and who it competes against. Then make ur judgments

I want to see Kia build the GT showcar that has been at all of the shows recently. It uses that same 3.3 V6 engine plus a couple of turbos for somewhere around 380hp. It's RWD, and it looks pretty cool. If it's priced right I might want one.

Lexus, Started with the LS 400. A car that was designed from the ground up. It was world class. In refinement and performance. It pushed the bar up for the German brands and was almost $15,000 less than a equivalent S class. It had no match in its price range. There are at least 10 cars that are better than the Cadenza in this price range. I prefer the excellent Optima. A solid value. I dont see it. They dont have to sale many to turn a profit.

3 things: read my comment I made about an hour ago and it explains why I mentioned Lexus. Also the car industry is so much more competitive than it was in the 80's. So pulling another introduction like how Lexus has done is so much harder than it use to be. lastly yes, there are better cars, but you have to remember, this is the car's first year. car companies rely on consumer's and reporter's feedback to make improvements for the next model year. Give it a year or two

That's right, for a brand that focused and still focuses on value can't in any point start charging a premium price for its products. Its needs to be selling Premium Products from the very outset like Lexus. Kia and Hyundai will forever have the stigma they have gained in its early years.

People said that about Lexus when they were developed in the 80's. You have to look past the fact that its a Kia and more as a entry level luxury car with competitors like Infinity, Lincoln, Chrysler, Cadillac, ect. . With good marketing, and strong improvements, I can see this car being something in a few years. Then kia can start building cars to compete against the big four; Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes Benz.

"It's still a Kia" has to be the stupidest thing you can say about a car like this. It's pretty much saying, "This car is great and I have no complaints about it, so I'm going to say the most overused, ridiculous phrase I can think of because the brand used to have poor quality."

not sure if you are aware of this or not but merc, bmw, audi, and lexus also use plastic in their interiors. maybe not their higher end models but in the lower/cheaper models, yes. The new cts will be competitive(5series, e-class), srx competes with lexus rx, but yea thats it. to be fair cadillac has far fewer models though. xts was built to suit a more american style of a "cruiser", escalade is a similar story suited for the american market. but yea caddy has a long way to go with new product

Tesla is doing very well its $80,000 electric Model S. They are the new Lexus. They have put the rest of the world on notice. First run first year. I owned a 1986 Acura Integra. That was an excellent car the first year Aucra came to be. The Legend was sweet also. At this point the Cadenza fails to impress me. I will drive it. Had it been 30k to 35k. I might have been impressed. You can do so much better with your money in the current market. Kia is now a solid car. At least it wont fall apart.

I have no doubts that toyota has high quality production facilities/system. I was pointing out Toyota was once a hyundai/kia brand before the quality improvements. I'm also pointing out the fact that too many ignorant folks who dont know history beyond the 90's always shit on others w/o giving any credits for their improvements. I'm no fan of Hyundai/Kia but I respect how far theyve come. Even you said, "Hyunda/Kia are not on their level YET." Lets have this discussion again in 10 years and see.

First you say that quality is subjective and than that it's just the matter of price. Price that is impossible to get from any manufactorer because it's a secret. So yes it's very subjective information but since most reviewers almost praise the interior quality in 508 and call it one of the best in class it's pretty safe to say that it's not crap.

  • @NathanDAdlen
    @NathanDAdlen 11 ปีที่แล้ว

They all tune for sound differently. Lexus is one of the quieter cabins across the line. I would call the interior sound some of the best out there. Still, if you're looking to hear some sweet engine noise, look to the Germans.

You are not going to get a fully loaded Maxima for $35K it's close though about $38-40K A base model Maxima is actually lower than the Cadenza at $31K. and gets 19/26MPG. Lexus is gonna be WAY more money. All are good cars, just have to pick which you like better. One additional thing. The Cadenza is built here in the USA. and has a better warranty.

mmhh Yeah I see what your saying, maybe I shoulda said Buick. But thats a matter of opinion. Lots of people still consider Cadillac as entry level luxury because of what they lack in quality and durability. I mean Cadillac still puts plastic trim in their interiors, unheard of in other luxury carmakers. And other than the ATS, none of their cars can actually compete with the big four (Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Lexus) Your right, Cadillac is getting better every year, but they have long way to go.

do they drive Sportages or last gen Sorento, or the last Forte, if so then there you go! But I don't think the new KIAs we have at the moment such as this one right here - the Cadenza or Quorus and 2014 Optima, Sorento to name a few are close to that "low quality" you're talking about - I have some friends who own the Optima they said it's not the perfect car in the world but it surely shows how well KIA did the homework to come up with - surprised w the design, quality, well-built and services

$35,000 and only 22 MPG combined?!? NO WAYYY!!!! My Pontiac gets a combined 25 MPG, and that is a 16 year old car. So, in 16 years, MPG has actually gotten worse and they want more than double what I paid 16 years ago. FORGET IT!!!
And I agree with other posters, if I'm going to drop 35K for a 'luxury-like' car, I'll go get a fully loaded Maxima or Lexus first.

In general Lexus seemed to "break into the market" back then better than KIA but Lexus' aim was a lot different(higher)from what KIA's is so they supposed to do it better, like they did with the LS as they directly aimed at BMW and Audi...On the other hand KIAs just offering cars as good as they can with the price in place to start off with (which is not like what Lexus did). In fact, they don't even really aim at BMW&so like Lexus. So you just can't expect KIA to do such things like Lexus did.

The driving experience is just in a different class. BMW has no full sized FWD sedans. My 35k would be spent on the Base BMW 3 or If I needed the room of the Cadenza the X3. They my not compare with the Cadenza but they are way better automobiles. On a tight buget. The Chrysler 300 would be my pick over the Cadenza. At Almost 5k less.

Kia, please spend more design time on the front end-the most important side of a car. the design is not as strong as it could be! Needs more subtle details, better proportions, and a stronger geometry that is needed to define the model! The cadenza looks like a well designed car, but falls short...
