Toshiba TV/DVD Player Combo from 2004

  • UPDATE: I was able to clean up the TV and sell it along with an identical model of it I had for $20.
    This is a Toshiba CRT television/DVD player from 2004 that I found on the curb today while walking the dog. I first saw it around a week ago when walking by, but decided to leave it there. Today when I walked by, I decided to pick it up and take it home to fix up and restore. There was another TV next to it that was essentially the same thing, except with no DVD player, line input or headphone jack, just an antenna input. I decided to leave that one there, since it wasn't of any value and was the same TV with much fewer features. When I got home, I let the TV dry for a while before plugging it in. To my surprise, despite being left out in the cold, rainy weather for at least a week, the thing worked! The DVD player still works as well, as demonstrated in the video. The image is very sharp, with very good contrast and color reproduction. I guess the original owners of the TV upgraded to a crappy flatscreen, rather than throwing the TV out due to an issue with it. The only restoration work I'll have to do is a small amount of cleaning, then the machine will be in perfect shape. I will also have to get a universal remote or something to operate the DVD player, since the only functions that are on the front panel are Play, Skip, Stop, and Open/Close. But after that things should be great. It just comes to show how reliable CRT's are compared to the junk flatscreens they sell today. I would be surprised if any LCD or LED TV lasted as long as this CRT did out in the cold, rainy weather. As for the future of this TV, I'm not sure whether I will keep it to use or sell it, since this kind of TV is too round and "outdated" to most people these days. However, I may have more luck selling it since it has a built-in DVD player. I'll just have to wait and see.

    Thanks! Most of these TV's are in landfills now, since the demand for CRT's is almost nonexistent. So I'm always happy to be able to save one from getting recycled or thrown out. There are 1 or 2 people in my town that drive around looking for these among other things, but they don't take everything.

    I bought one of these from the goodwill for about $20, I use it for retro gaming and VHS tapes. It's a really neat TV, great picture and small so it saves a lot of space.

    One time I saw one of those and took it in before it started snowing, of course the time I founded one was during February 2017. I also saw one for sale on amazon which oddly has a lot of negative reviews.

    Most of the cheaper LCD/LED TV's today are no-name, or made by a generic Chinese company such as Funai and then branded as something else (Emerson, Magnavox, Phillips, Zenith, RCA, etc). They're pieces of junk, which is why I stick with CRT's.

    I agree. These small TV's are the only CRT's that aren't a pain in the ass to carry! :P I like the combo units as well, however most of them don't have very good build quality. Some are better than others, though.

    Mine is the same but says September 2006 on back. I bought it years ago for my mom to watch in the nursing home. She has since passed away and I don't have the heart to get rid of it. It is usually is stored in a box padded with towels until the random time when it is needed, like now. The dvd player does not want to read so am attempting to take it apart to
    replace the dvd drive. Back comes off with the removal of 4 screws but once open it is not exactly self explanatory how to get to that drive with ease.

      Most of these combo TVs come from an era where serviceability and repairability is an afterthought.

    Wow, that tv is very similar to a Broksonic TV/DVD combo that I found on the curb of the house next door to me. My neighbor was evicted about a month ago and left a bunch of junk behind. Also left was a 2004 Funai made Emerson TV/DVD combo that suprisingly works perfectly and a Toshiba Blu ray player from 2013 that also works. There was also a 23 inch Sharp TV from 2002 which I tried to take but couldn't really pick it up because it was so heavy and I think I broke it trying to do so. It's funny, the Broksonic which is now my bedroom tv is from 2002 and I didn't think they were making TV/DVD combos that early.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's probably around the time they started making them, as I would not imagine they made combos much earlier than that. And, the Broksonic could be a rebadged Orion, the company who made my set for Toshiba.

    • @HalonPoisoning
      @HalonPoisoning 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sebi's Random Tech That's what I thought. I did know that Orion made VCR'S under that name along with the Memorex name and they also made stuff for Toshiba.

    Exactly - A lot of flat panel displays (even more expensive ones now) are cheaply made junk. They are 'designed for the dumpster' - look up 'planned obsolescence'. That's why I stick to CRTs, as they are repairable to a component level, whereas flat panels are repairable to a modular level at best (with exception of a handful of HV caps in the power supply).

  • @Fairlane500skyliner
    @Fairlane500skyliner 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, some of them can be really poor quality. However, I find 34cm sets to be quite sturdy andgenerally well made. It's the larger sets (particularly 'no-name' sets), like 17" and 21" CRTs particularly that I am weary of. There was more demand for larger sets, so those are generally what the 'no-name' companies produced. There are, of course, exceptions to this though.

      @@seancurry5991 It would be difficult to say. I can't find any place saying what the last model was. The last CRTs sold in the US were sold around 2008-2009, the DTV conversion killed the CRT since most companies weren't interested in putting them in CRTs.

      @@SebisRandomTech That always boggled my mind, because digital broadcasting became more prevalent in 2003. Wouldn't it have been more profitable for them to have begun making CRT's with ATSC tuners back then, since most people in the US had cable and satellite anyway? My take is that they were just making paperweights. I have seen models like the one in your video-ones that were 19 inches-made in January and February 2007 that didn't have digital tuners. I love this model of CRT, but Toshiba didn't keep that in mind when making such a beautiful television set.
