Simple Guard Pull Counters And Adjustments

  • Our buddy Ricardo from Chile recently sent in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu related message asking about Guard Pull counters. He said that when people pull Guard on him, it creates a lot of trouble with his BJJ game.
    I know that from personal experience as a Guard passer and a person who likes to move when I train or compete in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I don't like being in someone's Full Guard. Full Guard is not a good position for the top person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Esspecially if you're dealing with a long lanky Guard player. It gives them control and in Brazilian Jiujitsu they are in the offensive position.
    In this video I share a few easy to use and super simple Guard Pull Counters.
    I don't go into great detail about each counter. Mostly, I did this video to get you to think about options that are possible and options that you can possibly use with your game right now.
    So if you're a Guard passer like I am or just hate being stuck inside the Full Guard position after the Guard Pull. Then watch the video and give these counters and adjustments a try.

    Very helpful, I just recently transitioned from no gi to gi and often frustrated by guys that pulling guard from the start.

    Just finished me first comp. Got first place very happy about that. But People where pulling guard all over the place. Only 1 out of 6 matches didn't pull. And even though i won those matches. The pulls made my back tired because i had a hard time getting out and not giving away a takedown or sweep. I just kinda muscled myself out of them but had a hard time passing.

    why he pulls with the wrong leg? if he pull with the other you cant grab it. maybe... i dont know...

    Also like he does where he pushes on the hip or the stomach when they try to jump that also helps you when guys try to throw you if you block that hip that's one way stop throws also

      Thanks brother. I actually get that question a lot. I plan to doing some videos on some of the lifting and exercises I use. Hopefully it will help.
      Anything in particular regarding lifting with BJJ you're interested in?

      Chewjitsu I train bjj 4 times a week and lift twice. I want the most bang for my buck lifting and want to know what you recommend regarding exercises and split vs full body workouts. Thanks amigo:)

    Can you do video on how to counter someone who sits down kneel down right from start and starts scooting towards, I hate these kind of guys even more than gaurd pullers.

      Doesn't it depend on what the person wants to do next? If they want to lock closed guard, you're right But if they want to pull to De La Riva, then control the opposite arm to sweep, they would want to pull to the "wrong" leg. It depends on their setup, no?

      I'm not a *huge* fan of the new tool album, because it's not as heavy as tool normally is. But idk I feel its a good thing for artists to experiment

    Jump pull guard would get you slammed so bad

      It can but when done correct you get pulled forward and down off balance so you aren’t in position to lift a person up. If they just jump on you while you are in a strong balanced stance yes you can just slam the guy. I’m not a BJJ guy but I have grappled with them and I had to learn ways to deal with the pulling guard thing they like to do.
