Can YOU Guard a 6 ft NBA All Star? Feat. Raptor Fred VanVleet, Marcus Posley + Jordan Poole

  • At UW Health Sports Factory in Rockford, IL, Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors, Marcus Posley of the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and Michigan Commit Jordan Poole, gathered for a one-on-one contest.
At 6 feet tall, Fred VanVleet, former Wichita State great and 2x Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, seems undersized. Once out on the court, he shows why he has a roster spot on the Toronto Raptors.
Former St. Bonaventure standout and current Sioux Falls guard, Marcus Posley, is around Fred's height as well. Just like Fred, he proves why he has a spot in the league, even if it is the D League, for now.
A top 100 recruit in Jordan Poole struggled with the undersized VanVleet and Posley but in the process adjusted as the session went on. Standing at 6'4"-6'5" Poole was the tallest competitor on the floor. The major difference between him, Posley, and VanVleet was simply the four years of college the two each had while Poole begins his time at Michigan soon. After playing with these two players, he will be more than ready for Big Ten basketball come this winter.
Do YOU think you can take an NBA player? Watch as Marcus Posley and Jordan Poole both attempt to stop the talented Fred VanVleet.
    *Update 2.3.22
Shoutout to Fred VanVleet being selected to his first all-star game and Jordan Poole becoming a solid rotational player with the Golden State Warriors!

Fred reacts to what the defender gives him really well. He waits to see an overreaction and then uses the space it gives him. The other two couldn't create space as well and had already made up their mind about what to do. Fred is a black belt.

Fred is way quicker than them, so they have to "overreact" but in reality they have to guess to have a chance of keeping up with him. They can't create space because Fred is so much quicker, he can just wait for them to move and then cut them off, he doesn't need to guess due to his superior quickness.

5 on 5 is something different than 1 on 1. If you play high level basketball you should be able to go past a defender if he's guarding you that close. You only really see how good somebody is when they are playing 5 on 5 full court.

People have to realize just how good these players are. Even the ones buried at the end of an NBA bench were star players at their high schools. I went to Cal and there were pickup games every Thursday night. One night, a freshman player on the team came in looking for a game with a few other players. They called next and I had to guard this guy. This freshman looked big (6'4) but I'm 6'2 myself. I figured I could guard this guy. Nahhh uhhh. He blew right by me like I was standing still and I was known as a pretty good defender. Someone that big couldn't be that fast. Thats when I realized just how good these players were. That freshman was Jason Kidd. The guys he showed up with were Lamond Murray and Michael Stewart.

Dang man that is crazy! It truly is something unless you see them first hand in person. Check out the open gym I posted of Jordan, he's improved a ton from a year at college. You can say this and that about the NCAA but I guarantee a year of Division One basketball, especially at a high major is a lot better for your development than one year of the JBA.

And really, one-on-one skills are just a tiny part of the repertoire an NBA player is expected to master. Even if you can hang with a pro 1v1, you've still got a looong way to go before you're sniffing an actual spot on an NBA roster.

USA used to have a hard time vs Spain, and Europe countries don’t have 250 million citizens. If you join the best basketball countries in Europe until you have a total population of 250 millions I say it becomes pretty damn close. And here in Europe almost everyone is encouraged for football, basketball can only come close in countries like Greece and some Eastern Europe countries. Even in Spain football is 10x bigger than basketball

I've shown this video to many of my basketball friends and I'd say "look at how good this unknown, undersized, unathletic, out-of-rotation NBA player just murders his opponents". EXACTLY, nba players have expanded their games so much it's very difficult to guard nba players no matter if you are an nba player or not. That's why I hate when old heads try to say its no defense these days because nba scores are so high or they saw a few clips of players being a little lazy on defense. Players today work on their offensive so game so much nowadays. So many times its just Great D but better O. Which is why players who actually do very well guarding other nba players and make all defensive teams should be recognized much more than they are because of tough it is to guard players today in the nba. It's not even just the nba either. We can go all the way to kids in elementary. Kids, teenagers, grown men are just so talented ans gifted on the offensive side its no wonder its so difficult to play defense on each other.

And he despised those games of full-court one-on-one with his older brother J.D., which he played while wearing a weighted, 30-pound vest. Other times, Joe Danforth put VanVleet through drills at a seven-story parking garage, screaming at his stepson as he ran up ramps and flights of stairs. Fred Van Vleet was 10 years old.

Here's what I learned from watching this. 1. VanVleet has mastered the fundamentals of the offense. 2. You (as in me, and other viewers; not VanVleet) should always try to have a long stride with your pivot step when you haven't started dribbling. If you compare VanVleet's steps with Posley's steps you'll know what I mean. 3. You should always go low with your shoulders and your body, so you could blow by defenders easily. VanVleet does that a plenty of times here to prove my point. 4. You should always have the ball away from your defender, always looking for an easy shot. This sounds very simple but it isn't. There are also things that VanVleet is missing in his game though; It would've been nicer if he had used the step backs more often. He would've had more space in his shots. But I guess he believed that the space he had from his moves was enough to create a high percentage shot. Also, he should learn to get a better defensive stance, by sliding his body along laterally with one of his hands up like how Klay or Marcus Smart do. But yeah, VanVleet, a solid dude with great fundamentals. I hope you reach bigger peaks man. Been fun watching you this season so far.
