I live on the west side of the State in Washington and the weather is not as hot as it gets in Dallas. On the other hand Walla Walla onions thrive on the east side of the state. Temperatures range in the 90s and 100s which is like your temperatures in Dallas. I would think they would do great there would worth a try. Hope this helps.

I couldn't really tell if it is or not. We do not get them in our area. The walla walla is the most popular sweet onion in our area.

I just tired vidalia onions and loved them. Is the walla walla similar in sweetness?
Also, how do I get these onions year round? I'd like to have one a day. I have a hard time finding them in any grocery store. I found vidalia a few weeks ago, and now nothing.

    Onions love water, and nitrogen.

I have to be honest and tell you I don't really know if that's an option. I would have to say it wouldn't be a good idea because the the green leaves is where the bulb gets it's energy to to grow. You could always test it out by just doing one bulb as a test bulb and see what happens.

Mine have been planted since 4/15/13 here in WA state. (Kitsap County) and they aren't as huge as yours and the green parts kind of flop over. When do you start to move the dirt away from the "bulb"?

My wife is from Oregon and she LOOOOOOOVES walla walla season, but we live in Dallas TX now and I want to try growing some. Are they very tolerant to heat? I was thinking about starting some bulbs around sep/oct but not sure exactly when to start them here. I'm in zone 8a. Thanks very much!! Nick

Pulling the dirt away does nothing except remove the weeds. Its good practice but unnecessary if there is no weeds. I usually hill to plant first cultivation smothering weeds then pull dirt away like this unrooting weeds second cultivating. If no weeds i just scrape between rows..
