    Touching sensitive tribute to Gavin Wright, it's fate this beautifully worked knife ends with someone who appreciates it in the finest of details. Wonderful comparison of Michael May's, Lee Wight's and Gavin Wright's work side by side. Interesting they were apart for a couple of decades and then Gavin returned to work again with Lee, thanks for this video.

      Stone Mason I’m certainly glad it came to me. Totally serendipitous. I didn’t even know these knives existed.

    How sad that such a talented knife maker passed away leaving a relatively small legacy, at least his work is now being seen by a wider audience thanks to this video.

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      chris osh in addition to the knives, he also left a wife and two children to remember him. Whilst it’s sad that they lost a husband/father, he’s also left a lasting presence on the planet in flesh and blood. Maybe one of them will become a cutler? Who knows?
      I have a sword made by a smith called Amada Sadayoshi in 1936. 6 months later he died aged just 37. His son Amada Agitsugu was only 10, but grew up to be not just a sword smith, but a National Living Treasure of Japan. One of his swords would cost ten or twenty times that of his father. As I say, who knows?

    This was a rare treat - I doubt there are many people in a position to conduct this kind of comparison, and even if there were they wouldn't do it as well.

    An excellent well put together video on a beautiful knife made by Gavin, i'm so happy you got hold of it so you could see the talent he had and be able to show it off, hopefully you might get another at some point, i'm pretty sure the total number he made and were set out to sell is around 8-10 so fingers crossed.
    Thank you Slick

      lee white thank you for the information to put this together. It came to me by pure serendipity. I wonder how many other people pay as much attention to the signatures as I do? I hope I’ll find one somewhere, eventually! There’s three more of your knives coming next, then half a dozen Arthur Wrights. Then we’ll be back to three more of yours. Two from Bakewell’s latest batch plus a MOP Stockman. I could have bought a dozen of that latest batch, if only I could afford them!

    Hi Slick, love the channel. just wondered if the Kwik brass openers that you use on some of your Barlows mark the blade at all? Are they grub screws?
    Kind Regards, Kane

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your kind words. I expected that the grub screws would leave little divots, but there’s nothing noticeable. The brass is obviously softer than the steel, but I was careful to clean everything before I put them on, to avoid there being a little bit of hard grit in there. Eventually though, I took them off and I’m much happier with them. I don’t think that they have got easier, it’s that my hands have got stronger. I can even open Arthur Wrights now!

    A special and honourable tribute to a talented maker, sadly gone to meet Trevor Ablett.
    Was Richard White related to Russell White?
    Russell was a long term producer of Sheffield pocket knives for Taylor's eye witness

    I have a knife here with the date 1952 it has a sheep's foot blade and act in opener on it and it has steel scales which is stamped with the date 'Sheffield, oil the joints,a military arrow the number C C 1285 and the name A Wright and son on it. I wonder if anyone knows if it is the same firm.

    This lighting was worse for glare than your current set up, but it sometimes shows a bit more depth of the figuring at times.
