"The UNO stacking plus 2 of Mario Party" is the exact mechanic I never knew I needed in Mario Party. Would legitimately love to play this map! Layout is varied without being messy, volcano adds lots of replay value, Ukiki is a chaotic menace, and the theme is fun. Not just in the sense that it's a tropical island setting, but that in this hypothetical installment of Mario Party, each of the Koopalings have their own map that they use to play with/torture their "friends" and family.

As a MP8 apologist I’m very glad to see far more representation of 8 in your footage and jokes compared to most Mario Party videos. Every other MP video like this only ever acknowledges the GameCube games but, 8’s boards were truly something special
I’ll admit I may be a bit biased since 8 was the one I played as a kid, but I think Koopa’s Tycoon Town and King Boo’s Haunted Hideaway are 2 of the best boards in the series!
@ they really are!! Screw bias, MP8’s boards are fantastic. Goomba’s is the only real miss but even that has its charms compared to a lot of other boards. Shy Guy’s Perplex Express is a really fun concept, especially with Kamek moving a car you’re on/in, and I love how the DK/Bowser dynamic works on it. Bowser’s Warped Orbit being wholly theft focused makes for such a fun cutthroat experience, there’s nothing more exhilarating than someone reversing the board so you’re right behind them with a Bowser candy >:3. It’s a damn good game and I’m tired of all the MP8 slander we see cause people are scared of the Wii remote minigames
Very cool map, if I could add one thing it would be that being inside the volcano gives you complete immunity from the ukiki - and if you're currently being chased by one when you enter they go after another player. This both gives the volcano path more value aside from a last ditch gamble if you're far behind, as well as better tying the two main gimmicks of the board together.

There’s nothing perfect about sending Donkey Kong back to “being a board event” jail. The best thing about Mario Party 10 is he was freed. Now, if we wanna make that FUNKY Kong, no changes to the rest of the board, it’s an incredibly fun concept for a board. Feel we could do better than a lagoon given… you know, recent boards and just having had plenty of beach/lagoon boards before.

The way the board is laid out you technically can loop down into the forest from the top and do both! I feel like the Volcano probably isn’t worth it most of the time, but people will do it anyway to be funny

The Ukiki system is interesting, but a smidge overengineered. There is a good idea here, but it needs a couple more drafts to shine. Overall, this is a good first draft. This is something that can be worked into a great board.
Idk, volcano just seems barely worth it to me. It's longer than the regular path, so if you need to get somewhere quickly you're not going through it, and I think the risk is too great unless you're super far behind. And the volcano path being bad also directly nerfs the wand item since nobody will be there for you to screw with. Maybe it could be like Chilly Waters where it leads to many branching paths to get to places quicker, but it's more risky
I like the idea. I do have some feedback and questions though: 1. Star Spaces - How many of them are there and where are they located? I’d argue that these are an essential element of boards too, as it can be the entire reason to go down a certain path. 2. Economy- It seems like this board has a lot of events that take away coins that would make it very hard to purchase a star. If there’s potential for there to be lots of red spaces, events where Ukiki can take coins, and there’s a counterplay where you pay more coins to avoid it, it sounds like there’s going to be few stars in play. Some of my least favorite boards (Peach’s Birthday Cake in particular) have a similar issue where there’s too many events that take away coins and hardly anyone has enough for a star. 3. Volcano - I like the idea, but I think having a guaranteed reward at the end would make it more worth it since it seems like it’d be pretty easy for someone to sabotage them. Also, if someone else enters the volcano while someone is already there, do the spaces remain the same? (Kind of like the coins in the lucky areas in Mario Party 8). And does your current roll carry over when you enter? Because I feel like someone could roll higher than a ten outside with an item and make it to the end easily. And if the spaces are the same when a second person enters the cave, someone could enter knowing they will land on a good space and make it to the end with little risk as long as no one has a wand. 4. Ukiki/DK Loop Exploit - Like I said earlier, Ukiki seems like it would kill the economy of this board, but even if there was a limit to how much he could steal, I feel like the gimmick could be easily exploited via the 15 space loop in the bottom middle of the board. The item shop at the bottom of the board is within 10 spaces from not only 2 Ukiki spaces, but also a DK space. If you can buy a Custom Dice item there, I feel like it’d be easy to just buy one and easily land on one of those spaces consistently. And then you can loop back around and do that again within one or two turns. I think the fun thing about designing Mario Party boards is you can playtest them if you have friends to do it with. You can just make your own physical barebones board with the space lineup and play the game in person while selecting Minigames to play in the free play mode of your favorite Mario Party. I think this board is really cool, and that would be a neat way to fine-tune it. (If you really wanted to of course. I know Nintendo/ND Cube would never take board ideas from players.)
Fun Video! As a huge Mario Party nerd I do want to point out some potential issues with the design. Mainly while I do think the Ukiki idea is fun, I also think that in practice it doesn’t necessarily work out. If you get to choose who to steal from, then in an optimal setting you’d want to target first place, but with this design you actually just want to target the player with the least coins to prevent it from coming back to you, especially if you don’t get to keep the stolen stuff. Like say you’re in first and someone sends the Ukiki to you and it will cost you 20 coins to send it somewhere else. If you know that the cost to send him back to you will double to be 40 coins you just send it to a player who can’t afford it so that you don’t risk losing stars. This would just make it a mechanic that mostly serves to keep the players that are already behind back. Sure there might be cases where first place just dumped a lot of money on stars and items and won’t have the money to cover it, but in general it would seem like the player struggling the most would face the brunt of this mechanic, which never feels great. Similar to boo but less incentive to steal from the strongest players, you don’t get anything out of it, and just constantly drains everyone's econ as people try to pass it off every turn, which again only really benefits the leading player. I think the volcano is interesting but needs to be more worthwhile. Rather than just random spaces it should probably only have random volatile spaces: DK, Bowser, Chance Time, Green Spaces (Larry Spaces even) with wild effects. Everything being random just means that on average it won’t be very exciting because red and blue spaces are just not very interesting. Or make it so everything in the volcano is high value good spaces but getting erupted makes you lose all of your coins/items/a star. That creates a much more intense dynamic kind of like space land laser with higher reward (which could make using cursed dice/custom dice to stay in the volcano while people scramble for a wand really chaotic). I also think each eruption should add an eruption green space to the board (kinda like Bowser Byway in Jamboree) so that the later in the game the riskier it gets to go in. And a small thing is I think the item shop on the bottom row should be moved back about 4-5 spaces. That corner is the one point on the board where after plessie you have 13 spaces without a junction, and 12 to get to the item shop. I think having the item shop closer would give people more reason to use that path and for people stuck on that path throw them a bone to help them get out of there quicker.
This is actually a very cool board, but in the opinion of a perfectionist who has only played MP10 and watches too much mario party on yt, i think theres a little too much going on here for it to be the starter board (as mentioned at 14:46). Ukiki and the volcano are fine and should stay (with some adjustments) but i feel either Plessy or the piranha plants should be removed to avoid needless clutter. if the piranha plants are kept, the randomness should be removed imo. maybe they’re only awake on odd turns or maybe they only take items, so you can avoid them by not carrying any, but there’s enough randomness elsewhere as is. i also agree with the common sentiment that the volcano route isn’t worth it, mostly because of the wand. i would suggest that if you have larry’s wand (considering theres usually only one in the mainline games) larry either can’t do a thing to you, or barters it back from you using a good item or some coins otherwise the wand is completely underpowered in its current state. thinking of the bowser board and the lever from jamboree, in comparison theres no practical incentive for using the wand. unless you have a custom dice to get around the bowser space that will likely appear, thats just shooting yourself in the foot. even using it while someone is in the volcano is a bad idea in the off chance they land in front of the star (theres a reason the green pipe is decent in jamboree) also while perhaps unnecessary, i think there should be a cap on Ukiki a soft cap would be fine btw, exorbitant prices of 120 coins *after* bounce 4 (which for context would be multiple stars 21:33). Otherwise there should be less (2) spaces of him to make him activate less, this is because “if you pay him a small fee, you can choose another player…” 20:42. this means he’s basically just a paid boo you can’t mash from lol (not a criticizm). And although most players in my experience would rather just pay up ten coins or lose a mushroom than risk losing 3 stars a few turns later, this is only a problem if bribing is more expensive than letting him steal (as i previously assumed). 22:22 just so i covered everything, both rhythm and mashing are the sort that definitely would be nailed every time with a bit of practice, i understand why you wouldn’t consider this, but mario party is after all, a family game. usually when these things appear, its a minigame against other players, so theres no need to decide what counts as a good performance, just that you’re better than your opponents. Ironically, although i usually like skill in my games, i actually prefer the bowser vault in jamboree to this approach, maybe instead you would get a few attempts to find an item buried underground, or a rendition of a crane game if you’re super against using luck here. Being able to choose the target has a surprising amount of nuance tho, and i don’t think more strategy is needed here. i hope someone actually reads this….. this took so long
Given how your previous videos touched on ststistics and maths i expected this video to dwelve more on these topics. Maybe something can be drawn from stuff like graph theory or flow in networks and graphs to derive a more mathematically sound board, and some sort of objetive quality metric for qualifying a board in regards to its graph composition. Regardless of this, actually amazing idea for a board! I personally would prefer it to have an extra bowser and dk space, maybe change the volcano a bit as other comments have pointed out, but besides that i love the ideas, especially the ukiki gimmick! Great video!

theoretically most of it could be made in PartyPlanner64, though you cant make a custom item, its only for Mario Partys 1-3 and none of them have DK spaces, and the volcano eruption changing random spaces might not be possible (im unsure about the last point though as im not very familiar with PartyPlanner64 or MP 1-3)
yep, but as i understand, the people behind party project need to add it themselves, you can´t just go in and create the board yourself (i think). But that should be doable, at least getting close to it (i don´t exactly know all the mechanics of party project and if all mechanics are possible).
Instead of the volcano spawning "super red spaces" where you lose 6 (boring) it could make lava spots that catch characters on fire and they run ahead till it goes out
Knowing Mario Party boards, any events that change spaces, usually swap them between one form to the other, rather than just replacing random spaces with random tiles like you have it.
This sounds like a perfect opportunity for the Party Crashers to play that board. Even if it´s just a "simulated" game (like their party crashers cup, where they basically played thire board in photoshop). But it´s also a perfect opportunity for party project to add the board so it can be played "normally" in a fully functional game
As someone with some experience in strategy game design, I’m skeptical about ukiki. If you’re afraid of the growing power of ukiki, the optimal thing is to send him after whoever has the least coins: they will be unlikely to afford the bribe and as such they’ll get robbed, removing ukiki from play until someone lands on his space again. The poorest player is punished for being poor. Obviously, sometimes the player with the least coins is the player in first (cuz they bought stars), but not all the time. The reason +2 stacking works in uno is that a bigger hand (worse game position) = more likely to have a +2. It is a catch-up mechanic that is unlikely to punish the player in last.
He probably didn't want to make the video too long by going over the fine details that balance the mechanics. There's some easy ways you could make Ukiki not punish the player in last all the time, while keeping his awesome concept. For example, the punished player could be chosen by a spinner wheel you have to stop on a player, and the size of each player's slice is determined by how many coins or stars they have. A poor last place player would have a tiny slice that'd be hard to stop it on.
Major props to you for doing your research as a true fan should and for presenting it in such an accessible manner! I wonder what the ideal mario kart track would be...
Before watching your video, lemme just say: The PERFECT Mario Party Board will have: -1 Blue Space -1 Red Space -1 Bowser Space -1 Bowser Event -1 Star Event -1 Boo Event -1 Special Event that fills everyone's items with double/triple dice -1 Shop -1 Happening Space (that shuffles everything randomly!) That's 4 spaces, 4 events, and a shop! It's pure and utter chaos, and it's the best way to play Mario Party!
This is a legit cool concept though, and I think you're touching on a lot of what makes MP great. Looking back though... a lot of the titles feature a linear board, a game-within-the-game board, a choose-your-path board, and a RNG-chooses your path board, just for the conceptual variety of playthroughs. I'd like to see you play around with these theories though, and see what you come up with!

Larry works really well for the chaotic elements of this board, but considering it's methodical origins, it feels like a scheme that Ludwig would brew up instead. Seems there's a game afoot here, but not one more perilous than this Mario Party

There are 2 chance times, and Boo is swapped out in favor of Ukiki which I actually kind of like for the lower-stakes beginner-board it's aimed for, I still think 8/10 is fair because of my own grievances though

You should make a board that's optimized to be as bad as possible for your least favorite Koopaling. If you don't hate any, might I suggest doing it for Ludwig? I don't hate him but I feel like he's the kind of guy who would unironically think that it's good. Plus, since he's the leader of the Koopalings I'd imagine his board would also be the 'final boss' board. That way your BS mechanics can be excused as a tool to increase the game's difficulty.
What would be a cool idea if nintendo would do it. Would be something like a mario maker mode in mario party. It would be its own mode called custom party.

otherwise the wand is completely underpowered in its current state. thinking of the bowser board and the lever from jamboree, in comparison theres no practical incentive for using the wand. unless you have a custom dice to get around the bowser space that will likely appear, thats just shooting yourself in the foot. even using it while someone is in the volcano is a bad idea in the off chance they land in front of the star (theres a reason the green pipe is decent in jamboree)
also while perhaps unnecessary, i think there should be a cap on Ukiki a soft cap would be fine btw, exorbitant prices of 120 coins *after* bounce 4 (which for context would be multiple stars 21:33). Otherwise there should be less (2) spaces of him to make him activate less, this is because “if you pay him a small fee, you can choose another player…” 20:42. this means he’s basically just a paid boo you can’t mash from lol (not a criticizm).
And although most players in my experience would rather just pay up ten coins or lose a mushroom than risk losing 3 stars a few turns later, this is only a problem if bribing is more expensive than letting him steal (as i previously assumed).
22:22 just so i covered everything, both rhythm and mashing are the sort that definitely would be nailed every time with a bit of practice, i understand why you wouldn’t consider this, but mario party is after all, a family game. usually when these things appear, its a minigame against other players, so theres no need to decide what counts as a good performance, just that you’re better than your opponents. Ironically, although i usually like skill in my games, i actually prefer the bowser vault in jamboree to this approach, maybe instead you would get a few attempts to find an item buried underground, or a rendition of a crane game if you’re super against using luck here. Being able to choose the target has a surprising amount of nuance tho, and i don’t think more strategy is needed here.

Given how your previous videos touched on ststistics and maths i expected this video to dwelve more on these topics. Maybe something can be drawn from stuff like graph theory or flow in networks and graphs to derive a more mathematically sound board, and some sort of objetive quality metric for qualifying a board in regards to its graph composition. Regardless of this, actually amazing idea for a board! I personally would prefer it to have an extra bowser and dk space, maybe change the volcano a bit as other comments have pointed out, but besides that i love the ideas, especially the ukiki gimmick! Great video!

I thought about trying to mod it into a Mario Party game, but gave up after like 5 minutes…
theoretically most of it could be made in PartyPlanner64, though you cant make a custom item, its only for Mario Partys 1-3 and none of them have DK spaces, and the volcano eruption changing random spaces might not be possible (im unsure about the last point though as im not very familiar with PartyPlanner64 or MP 1-3)

yep, but as i understand, the people behind party project need to add it themselves, you can´t just go in and create the board yourself (i think). But that should be doable, at least getting close to it (i don´t exactly know all the mechanics of party project and if all mechanics are possible).
I haven't watched this yet, but my personal favorite board thus far is Donkey Kong's Stone Statue in Mario Party DS.
Instead of the volcano spawning "super red spaces" where you lose 6 (boring) it could make lava spots that catch characters on fire and they run ahead till it goes out

Knowing Mario Party boards, any events that change spaces, usually swap them between one form to the other, rather than just replacing random spaces with random tiles like you have it.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity for the Party Crashers to play that board. Even if it´s just a "simulated" game (like their party crashers cup, where they basically played thire board in photoshop).
But it´s also a perfect opportunity for party project to add the board so it can be played "normally" in a fully functional game

As someone with some experience in strategy game design, I’m skeptical about ukiki. If you’re afraid of the growing power of ukiki, the optimal thing is to send him after whoever has the least coins: they will be unlikely to afford the bribe and as such they’ll get robbed, removing ukiki from play until someone lands on his space again. The poorest player is punished for being poor. Obviously, sometimes the player with the least coins is the player in first (cuz they bought stars), but not all the time.
The reason +2 stacking works in uno is that a bigger hand (worse game position) = more likely to have a +2. It is a catch-up mechanic that is unlikely to punish the player in last.
He probably didn't want to make the video too long by going over the fine details that balance the mechanics. There's some easy ways you could make Ukiki not punish the player in last all the time, while keeping his awesome concept. For example, the punished player could be chosen by a spinner wheel you have to stop on a player, and the size of each player's slice is determined by how many coins or stars they have. A poor last place player would have a tiny slice that'd be hard to stop it on.
Major props to you for doing your research as a true fan should and for presenting it in such an accessible manner! I wonder what the ideal mario kart track would be...

This is a legit cool concept though, and I think you're touching on a lot of what makes MP great.
Looking back though... a lot of the titles feature a linear board, a game-within-the-game board, a choose-your-path board, and a RNG-chooses your path board, just for the conceptual variety of playthroughs. I'd like to see you play around with these theories though, and see what you come up with!

There are 2 chance times, and Boo is swapped out in favor of Ukiki which I actually kind of like for the lower-stakes beginner-board it's aimed for, I still think 8/10 is fair because of my own grievances though

You should make a board that's optimized to be as bad as possible for your least favorite Koopaling.
If you don't hate any, might I suggest doing it for Ludwig? I don't hate him but I feel like he's the kind of guy who would unironically think that it's good. Plus, since he's the leader of the Koopalings I'd imagine his board would also be the 'final boss' board. That way your BS mechanics can be excused as a tool to increase the game's difficulty.

I think the beach volley ball just gets you some extra coins or something. The V spaces are what trigger the volcano!
