    This series has been such a lovable introduction to photogrammetry, as a student studying 3D; thank you very much. You've made it far less daunting tackling such a seemingly sophisticated process!

      Can't wait! Still can't un-see the blurry junk.
      I've got a pretty good Cannon dslr. You mention good lens quality. What kind of lens would you suggest for photogrammetry?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Baldwin Generally speaking, I think sharpness is the main factor you want to look for. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to find out how sharp a lens will be when browsing. But you will usually find that the more you pay, the better the glass will be. But you can still find good lenses for pretty cheap. The 50mm f/1.8 that I have is a very cheap lens, but it gives decent sharpness (when shot at tighter apertures) and the color rendition even looks better to me.
      If you find a lens that interests you, I would check to see if Ken Rockwell or someone else has made a review on it, and if you're still hesitant, you could always rent the lens first to see how it performs in practice.

    Thank you so much!!! Ive been getting good results with your tips. Can you please make a video on the after effects part of exporting your images. I got the basic workflow of the green screen process down, but am having the hardest time figuring out how to export properly to get a 1:1 input to output of images.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas O'Hare Hi, Thomas! Do you mean you end up with a different number of masks compared to the number of original images? If that's the case, you may want to enable "force alphabetical order" in the image sequence import dialogue. That way, if you deleted or just didn't use some of the images you shot, AE will ignore the gaps.
      If it's another problem you're having, let me know. And thanks for the kind words!

  • @Mr_Dee
    @Mr_Dee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi James. I was waiting for the camera to drop down again after the first 10 sec;)
    These 3 episodes are really great!
    One question... So I've tried creating a photoscan from a tree. But when walking around a tree the light is different from the front and back depending where the light is coming from. So the scan has baked in lighting. Any cool methods to fix this without haven to manually change the exposure and stuff per foto?
    (The team from Unity Kite demo used sort of a anti shadow to get rid of the baked in shadows....)
    Cheers,
    Marcus

      Your welcome! Great video by the way, I've just been getting into photogrammetry these past few days, only on small objects currently, but am looking to eventually recreate an outdoor environment or two for Steam VR, so this helped me out quite a lot, thanks!
      I hiked up Ben Nevis with a friend the day before we visited Skye, I did actually take a photo of this exact bit of land from close to where this was taken, but I had the wrong settings on the camera and it came out too blurry when I blew it up on the PC :( these are more large hills than mountains, but the natural landscape is quite breathtaking to look at, and the Isle of Skye is really quite a tranquil place in general... apart from the hordes of midgies!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I hate it when I screw up a picture and don't realize it until I see it on the computer!
      I'm sure you'll be able to work your way up to large environments before too long. I think it's best to progress as you are- starting with small, easy to scan objects, and working your way up to gradually bigger and bigger subjects.
      By the way, I had to look up what midgies were- I thought "maybe seagulls?". Nope! Haha

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The Standard/Basic version of PhotoScan should work for just about any type of project, environment scanning included. The pro version comes with advanced stuff that I honestly don't even understand half the time, but it's intended for top level scanners who need the very specific tools to refine their results. But I think most of us are unlikely to ever need those extra tools, so the basic version should be enough!

    Quick question. Do you know if it is possible to stitch together drone photographs taken from different elevations? IE would it be possible to combine low flying images taken underneath tree canopy and combine them with images taken at a higher Ie 250 ft elevation ?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Gregory! Apologies for the delayed reply. I believe you shouldn't have a problem with changing the elevation like that- the only thing I would recommend avoiding is any change in focal length while shooting, since I believe the newer versions of Metashape (if that's what you are using) don't like aligning multiple focal lengths into the same scene. Having said that, I would recommend shooting a small test scan just to get an idea of what kind of results you might expect before shooting a larger area. I hope that helps!

      @ClassyDogFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Jose! Certainly, you can stick markers or other things into a scene to help the software better identify areas, but I would be surprised if this is necessary for any part of a tree. Would it be possible for you to share an example image from the shoot? It may be that the tree roots are underexposed a little too much, since darker areas tend to get ignored.

      You could definitely do both bodies and houses! I'm working on the next PhotoScan guide right now, which will include how to scan buildings. How does this work if the environment changes? Like let's say I take a bunch of pictures of a model railroad while the trains are running? Will the software just error out, or blur it together, or come up with a result that makes sense?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say what will happen, as I've never tried it myself. As long as most of the area in the images is static and non-moving, the result shouldn't be too bad. I recommend trying a small test first if you can. For greater control of the scan, you could mask out the train and any other moving parts. Or if you can shoot with a tripod, you could take multiple exposures from each position, and just combine them to remove the train. But only attempt that method if you can shoot with a tripod and preferably a shutter release, as any camera movement will ruin it. Masking may work just fine, if it's even necessary.

    What is a optimal distance towards objects? Is there something you should watch out for?
    what is a good CHEAP equipment for poor VFX Indies to go with when
    they're trying to do air shots? I heard you require a closing time of
    1/60 or a really high stability to get good pictures. This might be

    Great Video and fun, too! Thanks a bunch for making it.
    I have a question concerning post processing scans. I came to use realityCapture,which is a great alternative for photoscan. It is pretty fast even for large amounts of images and I've heard it beats photoscan so you might wanna give it a try some time. Anyway, it produces pretty large meshes. It does have a simplification tool, but not a very sophisticated one. I am looking for some proper software to remove artifacts, smooth parts of the mesh, remove complexity where it isn't needed and the like. What do you use for post processing and what can you recommend? Currently, I work with Blender but I feel there must be better options.
    Again, thanks for the fantastic video.
    Cheers

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Ole! You're right, RealityCapture is a great program. I hope to try it in the near future!
      I don't have a lot of experience outside of Blender, but I know many scanners like to use zbrush. It can handle those big meshes easily compared to Blender. It is a bit of money to purchase, but if it can fit your budget, I'm sure it could pay for itself quickly in time saved. I intend to buy a license myself next year.
      Thank you for the kind words!

      ClassyDogFilms thanks for the reply! I'll have a look at zbrush. Seems to be a good hint.
      Blender can reach its limits quickly and nothing is worse than a crash after an hour of tedious work on a huge mesh. Zbrush would pay itself via all the equipment I don't smash in frustration :)
      Hope to see more of your tutorials in the future.

      ClassyDogFilms By the way, what do you make of googles project tango and the Lenovo phone that works with it. Those seem to do a decent job of photogrammetry in real time on a mobile device. I know what you mean, just importing a huge mesh can takes ages in Blender. And I have heard about Project Tango, but I haven't really looked into it. Jon Parizo Hi, Jon! I would recommend looking for a used (but well taken care of) Canon t2i or t3i. If you want a flip-out screen, the t3i is the better option- otherwise the cameras are about the same. I bought my t2i new back in 2010, and it's still the only camera I use for both photos and video.
      Some people may tell you it's not good enough, or if you want to scan that you should get this or that- but a cheap Rebel dslr gets you the most bang for your buck, and is an excellent camera to start with. You can find some good deals on ebay. If you have anymore questions, just let me know!

      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Trevor! I've still never used a drone to shoot scans myself, but I'll offer some guesses as to what might improve your drone scans. It might be the time of day: Are you getting a lot of light for a good, sharp exposure on the camera? It could also be your subject matter: stuff like castles and mountains are probably a lot easier to get good looking scans than a plot of land will be; not just because the former is more interesting, but because their features are much larger, and therefore easier to capture from a distance. If you're scanning dirt, you might have to get closer and shoot many more photos. Those are just some ideas, feel free to upload a sample picture though if you still have trouble!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you actually can get good models from video. I'll talk more about this in a future video, but generally you'll probably want to shoot a little closer than you do for still images, because the compression in the video will erode details a little bit. The higher the bit-rate you record your video at, the better quality of the scan will likely be. For example, the Panasonic GH-series of cameras will give a decent result due to allowing you to shoot at higher bit-rates than most similar cameras. I would suggest doing a test run and seeing what kind of results you get with the camera you have- that will tell you if you need to shoot closer (or slower).

What potential issue and success do you see with taking photos with a 360 degree camera (ricoh theta)? There may be worst photo distortion than a fish eyed gopro, but maybe theres an easy fix that'd result in better & faster environmental photo coverage. Thoughts/ideas?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dogma 360 Media Thanks! It's tricky to say, as I've never tried it myself, but I do believe it's possible to get some kind of result from 360 degree images with PhotoScan. I can't say how good the quality would be- as you know, the wider the field of view of your images, the fewer images you have to take, but the lower resolution the details become. Having said that, you could always combine 360 degree shots with normal photos to find a balance that works for you.
      The other great thing about cameras like the Theta is that you can capture IBLs when you're scanning to aid in de-lighting your textures later on! I hope to cover that in the next tutorial.

      Mason Menzies I myself still use my Canon t2i, which I bought new back in 2010. It shoots RAW, and can be found on Ebay for around $250 USD I believe. There are newer Rebels available as well, such as the t3i with a swivel LCD screen (can be very helpful), but other than that they're pretty much all the same image quality. If you're on a budget, I'd look for an older Rebel model rather than a newer one.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mason Menzies And when I say a "newer" Rebel models, I mean like the t5i or t6i. I'm sure they're slightly better cameras, but it just wouldn't be worth the extra cost of buying them, especially because they're probably way over your budget.

    I'm interested in applying this using a drone with/or a camera. Do you have software you recommend the most? Is there anything that makes masking super easy for when you have to do dozens or hundreds of images? Final question- do you do anything with copyrighting the things you develop? Some of the demos you showed were incredible- I imagine there's people who would love to make use of them either for film or printing- do you license some of them or no?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely get good results with a drone. Generally, I would recommend either Agisoft PhotoScan or Reality Capture. There are other programs out there, but those two are very well known and give excellent results. For masking, I know you can create Photoshop actions to help speed up the generation of masks. How you decide to create the action depends largely on images themselves, but you can use things like luminosity and color to create selections. I think you can even make selections based on sharpness.
      And I've never licensed or copyrighted any of the scans seen in the videos, but I also haven't saved any of them, either. They got deleted years ago in order to free up space on my old computer. But in the next video, I'll be making the scans shown available on Sketchup for free download!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I'm not certain, but it may depend on which photogrammetry software you're using. I think some don't care if you change the lens (such as the focal length) while shooting, and other do. But I don't worry about changing the focus, I do that all the time and never have problems with it. I don't believe maintaining the same distance from the subject really matters, as far as getting a good mesh result.
