  • An attempt to make the distributor gears last longer on an AMC. Keep in mind the distributor gears turn the oil pump. Excessive oil pump pressure can lead to timing chain stretch and distributor gear failure.

    I know this video is older, but I just built a fire breathing 401. we just turned down the crank to accept chevy rods so we didn't have to wait and got a better price. we went with 6.1 Inch chevy rods. We're also .10 over so we used .60 over 400ci chevy pistons and recut the valve pocket. Still cheaper and got us into a better selection of rings.

    The main cause of AMC V8 distributor drive gear inadequate lubrication is faulty aftermarket cam timing gears. My experience with numerous original factory engines never had any problems. But on my 68 AMX 343 with aftermarket cam gear several failures were experienced. I discussed this with my Austrailian AMC performance engine builder and he recommended a chain and gear set by Rollmaster. I installed it and ran the engine a few minutes and removed the distributor and saw plenty of oil on the drive gear. It is much easier to just get the right gear/chain set than to have to do unnecessary modifications to accommodate faulty parts. Check the Rollmaster set out. It also allows cam timing incremental adjustments.

    i did this oil mod on my amc 304 after it jumped time and the cam gear was also destroyed i think from poor oiling.i believe it must inprove the oiling inside the cover.thanks for the video.great info

    Great post......Just watched another post that should have been titled "How Not to change you AMC 360 timing cover" this rodknock broke every one of the engine building commandments ...... It was refreshing to view a post with some good old "Old School" Tech.. Thanx....

    I had a Cloyes Roller Chain gear that had the oil passage pocket drilled in the wrong place! That too will eat the AMC Distributor gear. easy to fix if you catch it first. Always check for stupid things like that! I learned to never trust aftermarket parts without a complete check of everything.

    Great vid just got a 390 amx need to do this.by the way 8 years later some amc parts are harder to find than gold and more expensive too.

    timing gear failures are caused by high oil pressure, should be 45 psi. if higher the gear will strip

      @Oldsmob455  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If that was the case there would be stripped gears all over the country. :)

      @@Oldsmob455 do what? so why did a AMC engine from the factory run just fine until a idiot works on it? the timing gear run the distributor which turns very easy, but the oil pump loads very fast with high pressure, do some research on how much load it take to make 80 psi vs 45 psi, i find AMC engines with this problem and buy them cheap, most times it has been rebuilt with a new timing cover oil pump and pressure regulator spring, the spring is set at 80 psi, you have to cut two rings off of it to make it 45 psi, which was the stock oil pressure from the factory, the camshaft is ground so the thrust forces are counterbalanced where you do not need a cam button, SMH
      it is actually the oil pump drive gear, the distributor slaves off of it, but it is referred to as the timing gear which causes a lot of confusion, people fail to take into account the amount of torque required to make high oil pressures that will strip the gear in ten minutes or less, i ran into that problem and lowered my oil pressure and I am still running that engine on the same set of timing gears

    I wonder whether this may cause a factory distributor to get oil in it. The factory motorcrap distributor has a spiral groove the runs up the shaft from the drive gear, that acts as an archimedes screw to supply a tiny bit of oil to the upper and lower shaft bushings. By increasing the oil down there, might it increase the likelihood of oil ending up under the advance weight cover? Just a thought. Also, a side note; when replacing distributors, it is advisable to reuse the stock distributor shaft gear (same size shaft on the hei as stock) or get a matched set (under 50 bucks) becuase of the epidemic of sorts of improperly made distributor gears shredding or otherwise damaging the camshaft gear.

      Cody Moncrief I doubt it. if it was sitting in an oil bath, would still only draw a little oil. I would not think they would design it based on the hope that just the right amount of oil gets splashed up. also tons of people have done this.
      those motorcraft distributors are very well built! pre 78 prestolite on the other hand...

    Any suggestion on a good distributor/ignition system for my 1976 cj7 jeep with 258 engine and upgraded GM TBI fuel injection? Since I have a ecm/computer, I would like it to control timing.. :)

    Thanks for the plug oldmob455. Glad you notice what we did to the line to create a fanned spray pattern in the oiler. If you guys ever run into a problem getting rods for an AMC engine again let me know, we had forged rods made in stock length for both the smaller engines and well as the 390 and 401s that we have in stock. They are forged I-Beam with ARP cap screws and are bushed for floaters. Alfano Performance71amx@sbcglobal.net

      TheChaos98 I am running an AMC 360 in my CJ-7 (rock crawler and still used on the highway) and have had the Davis DUI unit in there for 8 years now. Absolute perfection. Only replaced the cap and rotor once, zero issues and really cleaned up the wiring. One of my top three mods I've done for this rig.
