- This is the official music video for La Prima Estate.
It was shot by Marcin Öz and Gabriele Galanti in Siracusa Sicily.
In 2012 Erlend Øye moved from Norway to Italy.
It didn't take him long to discover the goldmine of Italian music of the 60s and 70s
and start taking inspiration from its arrangements and style of melodies.
Neither did it take him long to take inspiration from the lives of the people
around him in the Sicilian town of Siracusa, his new home,
and learn enough of the language to write this song, La Prima Estate, his first
song in Italian, which centers around his friend Lucia and her day of
graduation.

Funny / weird story:
I DJ in a restaurant in the Old Port of Montreal. It's a weekly residency (now twice a week) I've held down for the past 3.5 years. The boss is a DJ and believes in giving me "carte blanche" musically. I play a wide range of stuff (jazz, dub, hip-hop, r&b, rock, soul, funk, house, italo, techno, new wave, etc), but usually gravitate towards "groovy / dancey" things, especially as the night progresses. Sometimes, when (and if) the time is right, I try and push the limits and get to a place where I can drop some some really freaky stuff...
It was near the end of my shift and we were vibin' to some Detroit electro (Cybonix, Aux 88, etc) when a 50 year old woman came to approach me. Customer interactions are few and far between (probably once every 3 months) and requests are even rarer. Whenever they occur, I politely decline (as the person usually asks for "top 40"). The woman loomed nervously beside me as I searched for the next track. She asked, "Do you take requests or do you only play what you have?".
"I only play what I have on my USBs, as I am not connected to the internet, but...what's your song?" I asked (mostly to humour her).
She shows me her phone: Erlend Øye: La Prima Estate.
"Noooooooo! What??? What??? Wowwwww What???? Are you kidding me???". I couldn't believe my eyes. For the first few seconds, I actually thought it was a dream or a joke. After the reality soaked in, I said "It's so crazy you're showing me this. I've been a huge Erlend / KoC fan for so many years. I've even asked for this song to be pressed to 7" on the Discogs page!!! Ok...I will play this for you, but are you staying long?...because I can't play it now. We're in a completely different vibe".
She said "I'm not leaving until I hear the song".
"Haha ok, I'll definitely play it, it's just a matter of finding a way to do it. But I'll play it. Just give me a bit of time".
"You can do it" she said (in a way that was much more demanding than it was complimentary) as she stood still and stone cold stared at me while Ramadanman's "Work Them" blared over us. It was then I realized she was (like so many song requesters before her) "on the sauce". I guess they don't call it "liquid courage" for nothing. But I digress....
After a few more annoyingly pointless and persistent back-and-forths, I motion to her that I was "in the mix". My mind raced to figure out how to get from bass music to this joyful little number. Long story short, after Aphex Twin (Flim) and some brokenbeat tunes, I was able to drop La Prime Estate.
I heard cheers and 4 middle-aged adults got up immediately and danced up and down the stairs of the restaurant. I wanted to take a video, but instead let them have their momen, free of fear or distraction.
At the end of the song, the woman came up to me and said "Grazie mille".
"Prego".
Coincidentally, today marks my Nonnas 90th birthday! I will show her this clip (again).

no one can enjoy a day like in the video, just because this image of Italy existed only in the 60's cinema, if you wil visit Sicily (Siracusa in the video) now you'll see a beautiful country disfigured by illicit buildings, bad local administration and poor civic minded attitude. To imagine the 60's add more poverty, criminal organizations and code of silence between people.
Rosso Rougecity Never visited Italy, but I've no reason to doubt that you're right about it. Unfortunately I can experience similar problems here, except the criminal organizations and the code of silence. Even so, this music and the video (props to Marcin Öz and Gabriele Galanti) are really great.
VMV1968 Yeah the song is well realized and the video too. Also i can say that Erlend Øye's italian pronunciation is really good, better then Mike Patton with Mondo Cane. If you like this kind of music i suggest you Rino Gaetano, lyrics are ten thousands times fascinating than the soft and happy-go-lucky italian pop song of 60's and '70s. Check it out, you can find lyrics translated.
