People wonder why passing Touchdowns are down this year. People think offenses suck, when in reality... Defenses have just caught up to the offensive concepts and rule changes.
QB play league wide is horrific and will be for the next few years until all the RPO nonsense changes. It's great in HS and a bit at the college level but athleticism and quick game won't save you in the NFL. Gotta know reads, gotta know hots. QBs called their own plays back in the day. Now to go back inside and yell at more kids to get off my lawn 😂
What I don't understand is Arthur Smith in Tennessee was known for utilizing the TE spot really well. And Mariota when he was in Tennessee early in his career, his favorite target was Delanie Walker... a TE it should be an absolutely perfect fit
I've been waiting for this, I haven't got more than a quarter into the video yet but it sounds like they should just move him to wide receiver to use him more with the scheme they're currently using.
This video makes 3 points I've felt since last year to be honest when it comes to this Pitts situation: 1.) Defenses have adjusted to the trendy "Shannahan" passing concepts. Anytime Kyle Shannahan starts to drift away from a staple philosophy or concept, or even tweaks it, that should be a red flag in my mind. 2.) Smith has a weird aversion to the "layup" pass plays. Like the pass game is reserved exclusively for explosive plays. The glance routes, the quick screens, I mean why not throw in some horizontal stretching concepts with some Dragon, Lion or Hank concepts? At least then, you're getting your players in a rhythm, attacking typical coverages seen these days, and playing into the strengths of your QB and skill players (namely Pitts and London). I almost feel like if he copied and pasted much of what LaFleur has done in Green Bay up until this year, the pass game would be so much more productive. They have the personnel for it. 3.) Other than Zaccheus, I don't know that I see any Falcons receivers or Pitts making adjustments to their routes based on leverage or coverage. So many of them seem to just "set and forget" and run their routes without any thought. I wonder if this is a coaching problem or a player problem.
You had to have coached or played ball. Another concept I never see them run is cross formation drags flat routes, off a play action front side or a naked waggle. I think it's a total offensive issue, as Bret somewhat illuded to. 1) Between Smith's play calling/scheme and his personal dependence on the run, specifically the outside zone, to open up any of the looks they might get in the passing game, it's a very narrow group of looks for Pitts. 2) Mariota's limitations as a passer 3) Not illuded to in the video. TEs in this offense (regardless of who they are) have had slumps in production, but it's almost always been on the limits of the QB. Hell, for the first time this year, Kittle is just now starting to resemble the player he's been in the past. Once those easy, short looks off play action that QBs like Garopolo and Mariota can actually hit are taken away, he's effectively gone. It's either there or it isn't. The only solution to unlocking Pitts is either Desmond Ridder panning out, or finding a true QB of the future. Off the wall idea, an amazing fit for Lamar Jackson would be ATL. He's a supercharged, cranked to 15 version of Mariota and Ridder, and loves TEs. If there's another coach I would trust to build around Jackson, other than Greg Roman it would be either Sirriani or Arthur Smith.
@@zackhurwitz9441 See I think the issue is Smith already has a QB and skill players who have complementary skills, they're just not used in a complementary way. Mariota's strengths lie in having a quick release with accuracy in the short area, and he's average at the intermediate level. Between Pitts, London, Zaccheus, Edwards, Patterson, Allgeier, Avery Williams, you have guys who can not only win in the those areas route wise, but can get you yards after the catch. And there's times in this season where they've run concepts and routes that attack the short area of the field and they've been very successful. The problem, and Brett mentioned it in the video, is that even after that happens, Smith falls back into running the same foundational passing concepts that started with Mike Shannahan and Gary Kubiak: Flood, Yankee, Bow, Drift, etc. And he does it in predictable ways whether it's formation, WR splits, or field position. It's almost as if he's stuck on staying loyal to the system instead of his players' skill sets. The only thing he seems to do to "confuse" defenses is run the same concepts but have different players run different routes within the concept. Defenses have become wise to the Shannahan concepts to the point even Kyle has stepped away from them and/or evolved and tweaked them. To be a good coach in my opinion, you have to anticipate teams adapting to what you're going to run and have counters ready. To Smith's credit, they have done that in the run game. The pass game, not nearly enough. They should be running more screens off of RPOs because it lets guys like Pitts and London get warmed up and get YAC because what DBs want to tackle them all game long. If they overplay that, it gives you a favorable box count where your O-Line is already great at run blocking. Slant/Flat combos, Curl/Flat combos, get the ball out quick and into space. If Pitts or London are solo on the outside with off-coverage, just throw it to them immediately and let them get yards. They did that once in the Rams game and London got 8 yards. Haven't seen it since. The TE screen Pitts almost took to the house against Seattle, one time thing and gone. Zaccheus scored a TD against the Rams on a RPO from a quick slant route. The first time these guys see the ball doesn't always have to be on some deep crosser or post route. It's frustrating because they've done the right adjustments in spurts. They just haven't haven't leaned into it at all. Jalen Hurts is more or less living in the schematic world I'm describing and having a fantastic season. Mariota isn't without his issues, absolutely. But to me, the problem is the system that not only he's in, but the rest of the passing offense. I don't think a change at QB is going to solve anything because there's more issues beyond that one position.
@@joeschmo5782 Couldn't agree more, in terms of your play calling suggestions. The entire principle behind a traditional west coast offense like this is getting players a chance to make something happen after the catch. That's Why I volunteered the Lamar Jackson idea, if Arthur Smith won't evolve, then their best outlook is to get a QB that can make him right, at least more often than not. He would be more effective than either Mariota or Ridder, with the pairing of his talents within this scheme. No matter how rigid said scheme is, with Smith calling plays.
As a panthers fan, despite that little bit of momentum we have and how competent our defense actually seems tobe...im sure he will get 8 recs for 90 yards and 2 tuds tomorrow.
You know what I just thought of? How did the Chiefs score 3 touchdowns on 3 jet sweeps to Mecole Hardman against the 49ers? At some point you'd think they would've seen it coming.
@@MarkelScott100 that’s what I said. He probably should start calling some defense, because that dude is a born choker riding his dads coattails when he’s allowed to run his offense. 28-3 comes to mind.
The guy had 1,026 last year as a rookie. Like come on how many DBs in the league can cover someone 6'6 the entire game? Take those easy slant routes over the middle. Micheal Thomas meme included.
This isn’t fantasy football and now that he has a reputation he is covered differently. Last year he had veteran receivers playing along side him to take the pressure off him. They are gone and the defensive pressure focus is on him. Mystery Solved
It's about utilization. From my understanding tight end is one of the hardest positions to learn because of the run game/protection stuff so if you can find matchups to help a second year tight end with a new qb do that.
You should make a film room on the Steelers disaster of a offense behind Matt Canada, I think it would be great considering this is going to be Tomlin & the Steelers first losing season in forever and Steelers seem to never have a losing season. Would love to see a breakdown on why they are performing so bad when we clearly have the talent to be better than the worse offense in football. Keep up the excellent work Brett!
Is that really that deep of a question? It seems fairly straightforward, and a direct continuation from 2020 and 2021: - Declining offensive line means inadequate protection and lack of punch in the run game. - Breaking in a rookie QB who is having some early teething issues. - Lack of really reliable every-down targets outside Freiermuth. The Steelers have gotten by for a few years now on the fact that their offensive line was very good (at least in run blocking), their defense was elite, and even a declining Big Ben was canny enough to not make mistakes that would take them out of games, for the most part. The offensive line has had turnover, Pickett's having, at best, some rookie teething issues (assuming you think he can sort them out and become The Guy), and losing TJ Watt early has dented the defense enough that it can't carry the team the way it was before. That's not to say Matt Canada is secretly a good offensive coordinator and he's being done in by bad personnel. But more that the problems with the Steelers' offense run deeper than who's got the playcaller sheet.
@@fanboy50 yeah I understand all that, but to be the very WORST offense in football takes some effort imo, just wanted to see him breakdown what he thinks are some of the reasons why other than the obvious, I mean we had a shit oline, bad play calling, and terrible qb play in 2019 when Ben went down but our offense wasn’t nearly as bad as that year, we had all the same problems then that we do now yet we are considerably worse.. why is that? Is pretty my question.

Kyle Pitts is now going for 250 yds and 3 tds this week. The Kollmann curse also works in reverse. Edit: Not 250 yds but 80 yds and 1 td is pretty good. I'd say the Kollmann anti-curse is still alive and well.
Nice breakdown. I’ve seen the Pitts/Mariota disconnect, as well. It’s starting to get better, though. On that Seattle long fade, I think it was just before the end of the half, and Mariota probably thought they were going for it as much as they could, while Kyle was thinking business as usual. On the Super Sail (I just call it corner) they hit that SAME route with Zacchaeus, but they 2 WR stopped on a curl, so it was Smash. I think ATL would do better in more no huddle. Also, I think getting CP back will change some of the play calls.
I think another part of the issue is that Smith and Ragone clearly don't trust the offensive line to be able to pass block (just look at the Bengals game if you need examples) and so they're asking Pitts to help block so Mariota doesn't get sacked in the first 1.5 seconds. If TF can do a better job at evaluating OL talent than the last regime, this issue should be reduced in the future

Always had a rule about drafting a tight end high in draft. I took a chance this year thinking the position is evolving. Man I really beefed up on that one
I wouldn't write off the decision to take Pitts with a high draft pick as a bad one. Coming into the season, Pitts had the 2nd most receiving yards by a rookie TE in NFL history and had 68 receptions with only 1 TD so he was not only a generational talent at the position but also a prime candidate for some positive regression. Factor in the TE wasteland after him and it made sense to take Pitts early.

I am eagerly awaiting the No1 overall pick in the next years rookie draft :( Also I took Travis Ettiene in the second round...and also Tee Higgins and DJ Moore and Darnell Mooney in later rounds..... so....yeah...just waiting for that No1 pick next year... :(
SoFi is incredible. Been out there twice this year for both a Bolts and Lambs game. Trying to get out there one more time when the Fins take on the Bolts ⚡⚡.
literally this whole thing just highlights that people want to take stabs at the Falcons more than actually opening their eyes to see what's going on. Say what you will about Matt Ryan but the dude knew how to get his best receivers the ball covered or not, hence Pitts had a monster rookie year. now we have Mariota who cant throw accurately too save his life and while the oline is better at run blocking now the pas protection is WEAK so they run these designed bootlegs to keep him protected and keep the routes short cause Mariota cant throw deep very well (the Byrd shot was the only deep pass I've ever seen him hit) its not like Arthur saw Pitts last year and was like nah fuck that, he knows that Mariota is an extremely different QB with completely different weaknesses and strengths and is calling plays to try and get the best of who we have. but no, people would rather shit on the Falcons and cry about Fantasy football smh.
@@trippytree3889 What are they protecting him from though? The entire point of having a mobile QB is to let him improvise when the O Line doesn't hold up. But they aren't dropping back and letting him do anything from the pocket. Everything is a designed roll out of some kind. And when that's your offense, I'd say you're becoming far too predictable. I get the point that Ryan can read the field and make his decisions quicker than Mariota, but to suggest that Matt Ryan has even an ounce of mobility left at this point in his career is absurd. Matty Ice has been put on ice for the season mainly because he's a damn statue once the ball gets snapped and he simply cannot get away from a pass rush and his body reacts too slowly to climb the pocket. Put Pitts and London on the same side of the field, split it in half, and just let Mariota make simple reads to his two best receivers. When those plays are being obviously keyed on pre-snap, then you look for your one on ones on the other side of the field. There are ways to simplify the offense without fully limiting it like they are right now. Acting as if Mariota is a rookie QB is a major detriment. And if that's the case, may as well drop Ridder in behind center.
I feel like it will get better, they can either continue this for a while and defenses know whats coming every week and noone has any fear of pitts and they lose games because of it then have to change their offense to start using him and everyone else the right way or they just completely get blown out for a couple weeks and they realize their season is over and they just start ridder and try a more drop back passing attack and let pitts fly on go routes that he will eventually start winning on because of his talent then they can start using him on crossers like arthur smith likes and they pitts will be unstoppable. its crazy because they’re running an offense with two guys who kill dbs on go routes that they drafted both top 10 and yet they never let them rn go routes and they cant get chemistry balls to them.
i just wish i didn’t draft pitts in fantasy, i still want him on my roster and feel like hes going to be insane for me in the playoffs and the backhalf of the season but it’s annoying because i spent a 3rd round pick and he could have been traded for a paper plate at this point in time.
Could the chemistry thing go back to the playcalling ultimately? I'd imagine if they aren't having him run deep routes in games, they're also not doing it in practice so he hasn't had that time to develop any chemistry with Mariota (or even to learn how to bend his routes and so on, he just doesn't have the experience).
Would moving Pitts to Y receiver in play action sets help? This is why I felt the Drake London pick only made sense if the Falcons trade Calvin Ridley. Can't have Ridley, London and Pitts playing together. Having Pitts as an in line TE is a waste of his talents, he can't keep running these shallow routes. Move Pitts to Y receiver in play action sets.
I have heard that Aurthur Smith is a really great guy but I have never been a huge fan of his offense even tho he seems to coach the game somewhat well and keeps his teams in games where they arent just getting outplayed or outcoached. In Tennessee his offense really only worked when Henry was getting 150 yards and they cud throw a post or crosser off play action every few plays and do stuff off that. I always had put that limitation on Tannehill tho cuz I thought last year with Matt Ryan the offense was more diverse but now it seems to have fallen off. I do think Pitts issue is that he is still learning how to run routes in the NFL cuz he was in a system where he just ran the route and the qb just threw a jump ball for him a lot but i think it wud be cool if the used some RPO's and more of the the Chip Kelly stuff with Mariota that cud at least get Pitts the ball in space
If he isn’t seeing the field, then there is a reason. What does he look like in practice? Is he applying himself learning the playbook? Are the other players working harder than him? It’s so easy to blame the coaches, but they get to set the depth chart for a reason
See i be telling people that i could never do football because i’m too lazy to workout but it’s because of this. This stuff gets so deep and complicated, plus i’m way too lazy to watch any film
Watching that tape, he doesn't seem to come off the line hard (like Devonte Adams) and at the top of the route, he isn't changing direction in a way that generates separation. If I was his agent, I would be sending him Jimmy Grahm and Tony Gonzalez videos to watch every evening.
Brett, I’d love to see a Colts video. I’m a fan, but we got a lot of win the division love nationally so it’s not even a homer request, just a good topic. What’s the issue? Great video, as always! I found the part about the bootleg plays becoming oversaturated particularly interesting as a Giants fan. I'd love to see a video going over the Giants offense this season and why they have been having so much success. Especially since the bootleg has been a consistent play the giants have been running and finding success with, so are they doing something unique, or have they just been playing undisciplined defenses?
I believe The problem is the Oline I can't stress that enough they can't pass protect for the life of them Mariota is pressured on the majority of his passes half the time he's running not to get sacked with stuff like that is happening it's no wonder why there's barely any production in our receivers people are seeing the symptoms not the actual problem

1) Between Smith's play calling/scheme and his personal dependence on the run, specifically the outside zone, to open up any of the looks they might get in the passing game, it's a very narrow group of looks for Pitts.
2) Mariota's limitations as a passer
3) Not illuded to in the video.
If there's another coach I would trust to build around Jackson, other than Greg Roman it would be either Sirriani or Arthur Smith.
that would def be a coaching issue
When it’s multiple players I’d say it’s a coaching issue.
I’ve never seen a team misuse their stat like this in my life.
You weren't watching RG3 and Andrew Luck?
As a panthers fan, despite that little bit of momentum we have and how competent our defense actually seems tobe...im sure he will get 8 recs for 90 yards and 2 tuds tomorrow.

You know what I just thought of? How did the Chiefs score 3 touchdowns on 3 jet sweeps to Mecole Hardman against the 49ers? At some point you'd think they would've seen it coming.

Just glad you gave the tip on Friermuth last year, at least i got him doing something with pitts on the bench
The guy had 1,026 last year as a rookie. Like come on how many DBs in the league can cover someone 6'6 the entire game? Take those easy slant routes over the middle. Micheal Thomas meme included.
Hoping for an inverse Kollman curse and Pitts pops off this weekend
He did lol
This isn’t fantasy football and now that he has a reputation he is covered differently. Last year he had veteran receivers playing along side him to take the pressure off him. They are gone and the defensive pressure focus is on him. Mystery Solved
It's about utilization. From my understanding tight end is one of the hardest positions to learn because of the run game/protection stuff so if you can find matchups to help a second year tight end with a new qb do that.
MADDEN PLAYERS AND FANTASY OWNERS !! JUST BITCHIN LIKE LITTLE GIRLS ABOUT STATS
It seems fairly straightforward, and a direct continuation from 2020 and 2021:
- Declining offensive line means inadequate protection and lack of punch in the run game.
I had Pitts on my fantasy team last year. I think there were 3 games that he got me more than 5 points. But he was still doing better than my other TE so I was basically forced to keep him in.
Brett's really trying to use the Kollmann curse to his advantage.... very slick

Thank you!
Went to school w pitts from grade school to the start of hs. Like i was actually cool with bro. Crazy to see videos about him like this in my recommended. Life is crazy
Imagine seeing how they use him last year and still draft him in fantasy around 4-5th rounds this year.
Even in his rookie year he still had 1000 plus yards
Kyle Pitts is now going for 250 yds and 3 tds this week. The Kollmann curse also works in reverse.
Edit: Not 250 yds but 80 yds and 1 td is pretty good. I'd say the Kollmann anti-curse is still alive and well.
The Kollman curse used to reverse jinx a player into immediate production is a wonderful thing to see.
The crazy part is the NFC South is a dumpster fire and the Falcons can still potentially win that division.
He was used a lot more today. Had hood yards and a TD. Hopefully it will continue he was unstoppable in cfb low key
Brett! Teach us how to read plays and schemes? Where did you learn the crazy amount of techniques you see in the NFL?! Can you give us some resources or a series ??

@@phillipnguyen8789 they run like 70% of plays fam. Stats not everything
@@phillipnguyen8789 qb he has now made delanie walker into the #1 tight end a year, and a top 5 tight end 3 years in a row 🤷♂️. With who is the current head coach at oc at the time.
@@jessepinkman876 Dummy, first, Arthur Smith wsa an OC from 2019-2020. Walker's last healthy/good year was 2017. Wasn't even the same offense, get ur fax straight. Second, if you remotely think that Mariota can read the field the same way as Matt Ryan ur legit ignorant and weird. NO GOOD offense is gonna say, "hey Mariota, let's air it out!"
Atlanta brought in two very similar qbs Mariota and Ridder. The team will be built around them. The dbs will add more speed and tackling talent. At least 2 more receiver for additional targets for mobile passing attack. Finally ol then end rushers to enhance sacks. The Falcons will be true contenders next season for sure but the offensive points will be spread out by at least 4 rushers and 6 receivers. Go Dirty Birds.

Brett, seeing the title of this episode, I nearly cried.
I started Dynasty for the first time ever this year and with the 7th overall pick, I took Kyle Pitts, thinking that I got the top 3 TE for the next 10 years to come (if we manage to hold the league for that long). I am eagerly awaiting the No1 overall pick in the next years rookie draft :(
Also I took Travis Ettiene in the second round...and also Tee Higgins and DJ Moore and Darnell Mooney in later rounds..... so....yeah...just waiting for that No1 pick next year... :(

It's goddamn frustrating as hell.
i liked london a lot but i got sniped a couple times for him on draft day… probably a good thing

Thankfully, Brett posted this video and saved Pitts’ season
Marcus Mariota is being protected from the traditional passing game rn.
literally this whole thing just highlights that people want to take stabs at the Falcons more than actually opening their eyes to see what's going on.
@@trippytree3889
Nah, dumbass, thats what people are complaining about.
You cant win in the NFL using an offense like this
Fully expect Pitts to have a career day against my Panthers because of this video. Thanks Brett.
Been waiting for a falcons video for so long and this is the shit I get, fml.
I think the running against Bengals was an attempt to control the clock and keep Joey off the field as he was just a demon on the field.
Atl sure does love the flood concept of off play action
And then kyle said "I took that personal"
In conclusions, the falcons are still traumatized by 28-3.
I also drafted Pitts in the 3rd. But I also took Zach Ertz in the 10th and picked up David Njoku off of waivers.
I traded Pitts and Pittman jr. for Lamb about a week ago. Is that good or did I get scammed?
Brett you did it!! You fixed pitts 😄
They need to trade him if they aren't going to use him. He's still got value.
“But whatever. I’m not an Offensive Coach” yeah but how does that help me
I feel like it will get better, they can either continue this for a while and defenses know whats coming every week and noone has any fear of pitts and they lose games because of it then have to change their offense to start using him and everyone else the right way or they just completely get blown out for a couple weeks and they realize their season is over and they just start ridder and try a more drop back passing attack and let pitts fly on go routes that he will eventually start winning on because of his talent then they can start using him on crossers like arthur smith likes and they pitts will be unstoppable. its crazy because they’re running an offense with two guys who kill dbs on go routes that they drafted both top 10 and yet they never let them rn go routes and they cant get chemistry balls to them.
i just wish i didn’t draft pitts in fantasy, i still want him on my roster and feel like hes going to be insane for me in the playoffs and the backhalf of the season but it’s annoying because i spent a 3rd round pick and he could have been traded for a paper plate at this point in time.
He’s probably the most physically gifted TE in the league too, such a shame!
How you not gonna name this video “The Pitts of Hell”
Honestly, I was hoping he'd get converted into a full time wide receiver since he was drafted. I always felt it fit his style of play more
That metaphor would’ve killed in 1912 Brett I’m proud of u
All I'll say is there's a reason the Titans dropped Mariota to the curb.
They love those 2-fullback sets, can't blame em
PS. their offense is built from 1980s.
I picked up Pitts in fantasy last year and dropped him halfway through. This year I knew better.
If he isn’t seeing the field, then there is a reason.
What does he look like in practice? Is he applying himself learning the playbook? Are the other players working harder than him?
It’s so easy to blame the coaches, but they get to set the depth chart for a reason
this is easily your best thumbnail
Hopefully w this video a reverse jinx takes place
Hey make another one of these videos it helped me in fantasy this week.
See i be telling people that i could never do football because i’m too lazy to workout but it’s because of this. This stuff gets so deep and complicated, plus i’m way too lazy to watch any film
Do you coach any teams? Obviously youth development is completely different than pro film but you have a gift for teaching football
Watching that tape, he doesn't seem to come off the line hard (like Devonte Adams) and at the top of the route, he isn't changing direction in a way that generates separation.
If I was his agent, I would be sending him Jimmy Grahm and Tony Gonzalez videos to watch every evening.
In fantasy I had the 1st pick, and took Jonathan Taylor first and Kyle pitts with my 3rd rnd pick. This has been my season from hell
Brett, I’d love to see a Colts video. I’m a fan, but we got a lot of win the division love nationally so it’s not even a homer request, just a good topic. What’s the issue? Frank, Ballard’s roster/OL, the actual players, etc. imo it’s Frank’s scheme needing mobility at the QB position. What do you see?
Great video, as always! I found the part about the bootleg plays becoming oversaturated particularly interesting as a Giants fan. I'd love to see a video going over the Giants offense this season and why they have been having so much success. Especially since the bootleg has been a consistent play the giants have been running and finding success with, so are they doing something unique, or have they just been playing undisciplined defenses?
I don’t wanna talk about it 😢
The Kollmann curse continues...Pitts just scored right after he uploaded this video

LETS GOOOOOOOO KYLE PITTS SIGHTING SECOND NFL TD
You don't draft a TE that high to block.
I think Atlanta has outperformed their expectations so far though
We should have seen this coming. Aether Smith doesn't know how to use tightened.
Imagine if Pitts played for the Packers (or if Rodgers played for the Falcons)
For all of us PITTS owners, let’s hope they put Ridder in towards the end of the season to see if they can start building the chemistry.
Pitts in a Ravens Offense would be wild
Arthur Smith is doing nothing more than using this as a bridge year to get Ridder and Ridley ready for next season.
